KC Chiefs Cut Punishment for Larry Johnson's 'Fag' Slur in Half

The Kansas City Chiefs saved Larry Johnson about $315,000 after cutting his punishment for directing anti-gay slurs at reporters and a fan in half. According to the AP, the Chiefs were afraid of losing in arbitration:

Larryjohnson "The Chiefs issued a terse announcement saying they had made the settlement in conjunction with the NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association. Originally, they suspended the former two-time Pro Bowler two weeks, which would have cost him about $630,000. He will still miss the game at Jacksonville this week and not participate in team activities until Nov. 9. The Chiefs had said the suspension was for conduct detrimental to the team. Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press on Saturday the agreement had been tentatively agreed to. Schaffer said Monday that as far as he knew, Johnson would remain with the Chiefs. He needs just 75 yards rushing to become the team leader."

The punishment stems from an October 26 incident in which Johnson told two members of the media in the Chiefs locker room, "Get your faggot asses out of here." He later directed the same language at a fan on Twitter.

Johnson's agent Peter Schaffer later made the ridiculous claim to TMZ that neither he nor Johnson knew that "faggot" was offensive. Said Schaffer: "We know the N-word is unacceptable, that's not disputable -- but f*g? I'm learning that there's a segment of our society that finds it offensive and that it should not be used. I didn't realize that, but I do know now..."

The Chiefs have refused comment throughout the incident.

I am a black gay man. Why did so many of the white gay men who comment on this blog think it was OK to use the "n" word a few threads back when this story first broke. The "conversation" then degenerated into an attack on black family life.

Apparently some white gay men were so enraged by what Larry Johnson said that they didn't know or care that the ONLY black people likely to see their racist comments were the BLACK GAY MEN who come to this site. Larry Johnson has probably never heard of this site. Straight black people in general are not likely to come here.

Larry Johnson means NOTHING to me. I am NOT defending his homophobic name calling. I hope he is severely punished by the NFL. They could kick him out of the NFL for all I care (although that probably won't happen) but Mr. Johnson is no more or less homophobic than many (most?), straight WHITE men and women.

The question I have is why does the homophobia of many straight black people incite such RACIST reactions in some white gay men?

  2. @Elg No idea, but there are lots of us white gay men who outright reject the very real racism and sexism in the gay community. Sadly, to date, we have not been as vocal as we ought to be, but you can see that some of us are speaking up.

Now to my comment. Schaffer is apparently not worth his money if he himself suffers from a severe case of Foot In Mouth.

  3. this whole saga reeks of insincerity to me...this guys has to be an idiot to not know that that kind of language is inappropriate, and it seems as though the only reason any action is being taken in the first place is to appease all the lgbt people who watch the chiefs play. from this perspective, it's as though he's being punished not for conduct detrimental to the team (which clearly has no integrity in the first place) but conduct detrimental to the team's IMAGE.

  4. Think of how far we've come. Ten or 20 years ago, he would have been scolded and that would have been it. Thirty to 40 years ago, no one would have even dared to complain.

They don't care, ELG. Oh, the majority of white gay folks are not racists, but a whole heap of them are. Let me correct that, I believe that the majority of OPENLY gay white folks are not racist or fight against being so, the a good many are racist white bitches...probably with flat asses.

You know, for 4 years I tried not to sink to the level of just trading racial slurs on Andy Towle's Blog-- whenever we got on the issue of race; but now I figure, they do it, why not I? I'm very good at it.

  6. You're a better man than I am Derrick From Philly, 'cause I won't hesitate to take it to the streets. Zero tolerance for racist white gays.
