George Michael: 'I'm Surprised I've Survived My Own Dysfunction'
In a new interview with The Guardian, George Michael talks about how he smokes 7-8 joints a day (down from 25 at one point), says he's sitting on a pile of music he's not sure what to do with, laughs about the fact that Elton John is always trying to send him to rehab, and admits he invites a couple different people (Aside from his partner Kenny Goss) over to his house for sex every week. He also talks about a car accident that almost killed him and his time in the tabloids.
Says Michael: "For all the doctored pictures, every single breathalyser test I've
taken in my life has read 0.0, and I've never failed a sobriety test. I always preface this with, 'I deserved to lose my licence,
I needed to lose my licence.' I had a problem with sleeping pills for about a
year and a half, and I fucked up really badly. I got in the car twice
when I'd forgotten I'd already downed something to try to get me to
sleep. It doesn't matter that it wasn't deliberate – ultimately, I did
it a second time, and I could have killed somebody. But the fact
remains I was never accused of driving under the influence. I got done
for exhaustion and sleeping pills."
The Guardian adds: "What's a typical day in the life of George Michael? The common perception is that he gets up late in the afternoon, gets stoned and goes cruising. Rubbish, he says. 'The handful of times a year it's bloody warm enough, I'll do it. I'll do it on a nice summer even–ing. Quite often there are campfires up there. It's a much nicer place to get some quick and honest sex than standing in a bar, E'd off your tits shouting at somebody and hoping they want the same thing as you do in bed. DyaknowhatImean?' Why does he like to cruise when he could get any man he wanted? He seems astonished by the question. 'I do get anyone I want. But I like a bit of everything. I have friends up there, I have a laugh.'"
Michael has a new Christmas track out. Listen and watch the video for "December Song",

is very sad seeing somebody as artistic as him talking like that, clearly he doesn't give rubbish about anything, he is just mad and still very mad about how the world found about his sexuality and it was crusing in a bathroom, if you are going to label him a faggot, because he was doing something a lot of ppl his age do , then be it, well, he really does not give a crap about, what else ppl are going to say about him nothing, you want to see him in the gutter then he will stay in the gutter,
is like the dog is down and we are still kicking him more so the dog stays down,
you guys should understand him, because a can say a lot of us (humans) go thru shit and the more ppl talk bad about us the more we prove their point.
i can see why he does what he does and talks about it, you wish to tell him shut up and get your life straight but is much harder to walk straight when you have been in this road , because you are on your own
and nobody will tell you what you want to hear

@Josepe...
Well, there's that and the fact that because I HAVE walked in George Michael's shoes as far as this aspect of his life is concerned, I know that nothing that I would say would really help him. He won't want to hear it until he's good and ready.

How sad.

God bless George Michael.

Where is the sadness in this story? I don't see anything sad here. I dare say many a Gay male lives the same way, just with out the money and notoriety. Gay men and 14 year old girls have alot in common; fantasy of the "me" centered persona. "I'm a princess so you should want and love me." Gay men from 20 to 100 that are immature exhibit the same attitude. G. Michael appears to be one of these Gay men.
This is not sad it's common.

hear hear, sargon. This is so far from tragedy it's comical.

I still think GM is a brilliant artist - but too bad his brain is so f**ked up.
Posted by: steve | Dec 5, 2009 7:35:37 PM
Agreed. This is far from sad. Gay cruising obviously has a rich and vital history. There's nothing shameful about it. Tired of the 'Tsk Tsk Holier Than Though' queens who live to slag such an old school diversion.
What's sad is how many downright prudish judgmental young queens there are out there these days. Of course, I'm sure 90% of those queens also have ManHunt accounts. ("But cruising online is like, totally different, and stuff." [insert eye roll]

It seems to be a given fact that there aren't any effective gay leaders (HRC, GLAAD etc) - but we can always rely on George Michael to get the message out there. Now all we have to do is shut the twat up.

His gorgeous voice has given me many years of pleasure. I appreciate his frankness. Nice to know he's grounded like many of us.

Oh, please. I think giving in to carnal desires repeatedly (constant use of drugs, sex with different people on a regular basis)shows an emptiness in his life.
If the interviewer had asked a follow up question such as if George was content, I'm sure he'd would've paused before answering the question.
Posted by: omi | Dec 5, 2009 8:49:15 PM
At least he is honest about who he is right now. Whether or not you or I agree with his way of thinking/behaving is irrelevant.

lol @ Sargon
you sound about as cynical as me
good assessment
Posted by: steve | Dec 5, 2009 9:20:46 PM
and, you know, coupled with that cartoon up there, this all sounds like the final pages of some sad cautionary Christmas tale where that cartoon character ends up frozen dead on some cruising park sidewalk with a bunch of burnt matchsticks scattered about him
:(
Posted by: steve | Dec 5, 2009 10:13:18 PM
LOL on burnt matchsticks. I really did laugh out loud. Coz it's true. :(

I kinda find it sad when someone tries to be genuine about their situation, that people rip them apart for their honesty. What does that say about you? I also find it sad that someone values cynicism as a quality to be praised. You sir, sound sick.

He still hasn't hit bottom. Like Whitney, he will and then he'll bounce back. Or not.
Posted by: johnny | Dec 6, 2009 7:35:43 AM
PS: Can't imagine how fried my psyche would be if I smoked 8 joints a day (especially considering how potent today's pot is). 1 or 2? maybe on a stray weekend... But 8 = zero motivation.
Posted by: johnny | Dec 6, 2009 7:39:03 AM
Also: 1 or 2 occasionally, OK, but 8 joints a day? Considering how potent pot is these days, that would fry anyone's psyche and erase any motivation for change.

(sorry for the double post, TR is wiggin' out)
Posted by: johnny | Dec 6, 2009 7:45:31 AM
Abuse of anything is bad. But George is simply telling it like it is and I applaud that kind of honesty in a world of lies and half truths.
We're men. It's hard to surpress that urge to screw as many people as we can, we're wired that way and human are not meant to be monogamous, but we can choose it.
George Michael is and will always be a sexy talented man and I wouldn't mind meeting him in the woods some night. LOL
Posted by: Bobby | Dec 6, 2009 10:22:49 AM
What a poster child for the narcissistic, self-absorbed gay man. But I am glad his career is in the toilet b/c we don't need this jerk out there giving the world a face to out gay men everywhere. Get a life, Georgie, find a purpose bigger than your next high and trick, and stop giving interviews. You're just embarrassing yourself.
Posted by: B-rod | Dec 6, 2009 10:52:50 AM
I agree with B-ROD. This guy has everything: talent, fame, money and looks. Yet what he's describing sounds empty and meaningless. Getting high every day, and having indiscriminate sex with strangers. I almost feel sorry for him.
As a side note. I do think his music video is gorgeous and charming.
