VA Official Calls Transgender People 'It' and 'Real-Life Tootsies'

Eugene A. Delgaudio (R-Sterling), a supervisor in Loudoun County, near Washington D.C., was "chastised" this week by fellow supervisors for remarks against an anti-discrimination ordinance passed by the county protecting citizens on the basis of sexual orientation:

Delgaudio At a Jan. 6 meeting, supervisors voted to expand Loudoun's nondiscrimination policy to prohibit bias on the basis of sexual orientation in hiring by the county. Delgaudio fought the change in the meeting, saying he was especially offended by language in the measure that sought protection for transgendered people. In the debate, he called the board's attempt to protect transgendered people "freaky" and "bizarre." In a subsequent newsletter to supporters, Delgaudio wrote that "if a man dressed as a woman wants a job, you have to treat 'it' the same as a normal person."

Delgaudio's non-apology was nearly as offensive:

Delgaudio responded, reading a revised statement with the word "it" taken out. He continued: "With apologies to real-life Tootsies" and "to all their defenders who are calling me all sorts of names and, like Mr. Burton, are saying I should apologize."

Delgaudio's statements inspired apologies from fellow board members. Said Andrea McGimsey (D-Potomac): "I think that the actions and words of Mr. Delgaudio prove why we needed to institute the policy that we did the other day. There's clearly some people who need those kinds of policies in place."

  1. The header should read Virginia, because Loudoun is a very conservative section of Northern VA (land of McMansions). It is about an hour from DC in traffic and the politics are an entirely different thing. This dude is par for the course in an area obsessed with immigration policy and anything "other".

  2. It's awesome to know what some people think of us. Don't hold back now, we need to know exactly how deviant we really are.

  3. Really i dont get why they are so worried. Its the same in the UK where the churches are trying to block the anti discrimination bill saying they will be forced to 'in effect' hire gay and trans people.
The law doesnt say you HAVE to hire them, just that you cant reject them on those grounds.

Half the time they dont hire whos best anyway, they already have someone in mind, so its not going to be hard to find a justification for rejecting a good gay or trans applicant.

  4. What a coincidence, "It" is what I call intolerant, soulless, compassionless, black-hearted Republicans.

  6. It's always refreshing to see this kind of bigotry from a man whose last name ends in a vowel. More ironic still is that I can spell guido using some of the letters of his name. Don't forget, spaghetti bender, you aren't one of "them", and you never will be no matter how hard you try. You'll forever remain a dirty immigrant, regardless of how many generations removed you are from mama mia.

  9. Not only is he a bigoted idiot, even his cultural references are about thirty years out of date. "Tootsie"? Really? What's next: is he gonna reference Kristy McNichol in "The Pirate Movie" (which came out the same year as Tootsie) in his next screed against immigration?

No wonder this dope has no clue about transgendered folks. The guy REALLY needs to get out of the house a little more (or at least out of the early 1980s).

  10. From the WAPO link cited above:

    > Delgaudio won't say what first compelled him to focus his activism on gays, though he does say that he became "God fearing" at some point years ago.

    > "God saved me. I didn't always have a life where I toed the line," he said. "I have not always been a fiercely virtue-seeking man. I was young once. I wasn't married either."

... anyone else smelling a cold, dark, musky "closet" in this bigot's prior life? Not that this would, at all, be a unique phenomenon for such vile Republican homophobes.

  11. LOL! Yeah, that's right. I'm a Tootsie, now go f*&^ yourself.

  12. Wow! THERE'S a name I didn't think I'd ever hear again! Not only has he a homophobic record a mile long. Not only have I personally had run-ins with the man (and a very thick file on this all from 20 some-odd years ago), but the man actually thinks he's Batman.

    I wish I was joking.

  13. Well when VA voted that Republican in as so many Gay Republicans wanted this is what they get!

  14. Based on the picture of Delgaudio above, it looks like he is a big Moe himself!

  15. For the record, despite what XOLondon said, Loudoun is not a very conservative community. It voted for Barack Obama and Virginia's two Democratic senators and its county board is majority Democratic. It sends a mix of Dems and Republicans to the General Assembly. Note that the county board passed the anti-discrimination bill.

Loudoun is like its neighbors of Fairfax and Prince William County -- areas that swing between slightly favoring the Democratic Party and then slightly favoring the Republican Party.

  16. This sort of incident can happen anywhere.

Vallejo, CA is a suburb not more than 30-40 minutes from San Francisco depending on traffic. It voted heavily for Prop. 8 in November 2008. And it has a mayor - Osby Davis - who's known primarily for (1) bankrupting the town; and (2) homophobic outbursts. Apparently, mere proximity to tolerant people does not necessarily make one any less bigoted. There isn't much osmosis going on.

    Note: See John McCain.

  20. The guy has some valid points... if you have no idea what the hell you are, why should we accept some freak-of-nature, either?
