Palm Center Slams McCain and Boehner Over Statements That 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Policy is Working
Nathaniel Frank, Senior Research Fellow at the Palm Center and author of Unfriendly Fire, has released a statement correcting assertions by John McCain and John Boehner that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" should remain in place following Obama's announcement that he'll work this year to repeal the discriminatory policy.
It is important to pause any time someone says that discrimination is “working well” as policy. Senator McCain and Representative Boehner think discrimination is working well in the military. And if discrimination is their goal, they have a point. But this hardly means “don’t ask, don’t tell” is a success.
My twelve years of research on this policy show it’s a colossal failure that’s had the opposite of its intended effect. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was supposed to make sexual orientation a non-issue so gays could serve discreetly while protecting privacy and cohesion, and sparing our military the unaffordable loss of essential talent. Instead, it has:
1.) Wasted thousands of essential personnel, including Arabic speakers, and filled those slots with ex-convicts and drug abusers;
2.) Struck at the heart of unit cohesion by breaking apart cohesive fighting teams, and undermining trust, integrity, and honesty among soldiers;
3.) Hamstrung tens of thousands of gay, lesbian, and bisexual soldiers from doing their jobs by limiting their access to support services that are essential to morale and readiness;
4.) Invaded the privacy of all service members by casting a cloud of suspicion and uncertainty over the intimate lives of everyone in the armed forces; and
5.) Cost the American taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars.In this climate, it’s no wonder that rumor and innuendo have led to witch hunts that have meant yanking gay soldiers from their units, even when they have followed the law and policy. The military itself knows the policy doesn’t work, as evidenced by the declining discharge figures now that America is at war—clearly commanders on the ground are ignoring a policy which is not serving them well. The idea that “don’t ask, don’t tell” is a success reflects a profound detachment from the reality on the ground. By every possible measure, it’s been a costly failure.
Said Boehner the morning before the SOTU speech: "When it comes to 'don't ask don't tell,' frankly, I think it's worked very well. And we just ought to leave it alone."
Here's what McCain said, in a statement immediately following the speech: “In his State of the Union address,
President Obama asked Congress to repeal the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
policy. I am immensely proud of, and thankful for, every American who
wears the uniform of our country, especially at a time of war, and I
believe it would be a mistake to repeal the policy. This successful
policy has been in effect
for over fifteen years, and it is well understood and predominantly
supported by our military at all levels. We have the best trained, best
equipped, and most professional force in the history of our country, and
the men and women in uniform are performing heroically in two wars. At a
time when our Armed Forces are fighting and sacrificing on the
battlefield, now is not the time to abandon the policy.”

Not a surprising comment by Mr. Bad Tan-Herr Boehner.

My brother served in Iraq (twice) and mentioned that everyone in the military knows there are gays and lesbians (in fact, he friended a lesbian soldier while in Iraq) and everyone knows who they are and it just wasn't a big deal.

But it IS working, you see...it is VERY successful at keeping gay men and women in uniform either in the closet, or kicked out of the military!
In other words, "DON'T ASK for the right to serve openly, and DON"T TELL us that you're gay. That way we can continue to delude ourselves that you don't exist."
Right where they want us. Successful, indeed.

fuck McCain. the man is a Pig of the highest order (or is that the lowest order?) IF anyone has read of his life story, you'll know that he was just a partying loser with a name. if he wasn't a McCain he would have been booted out of the Naval Academy, instead of being assigned to McCain Field, named for his grandfather. AFter his 5 year ordeal in VietNam, he was still a womanizer and divorced the woman that stood by him all those years after she was in a terrible car accident and was no longer the statuesque and gorgeous ex-flight attendant he had married. he married a rich bitch that bought his senate seat in Arizona, by buying an estate there and moving him there JUST before the deadline for election filing after the incumbent chose not to run-it was the easiest seat for her to buy with her beer money. he is a fraud, a whore-chasing fuckwad, and it's time he was put out to pasture too.
and notice i didn't even mention his WORST mistake of them all: unleashing La Palin on the country he supposedly loves.
fucking prick, and not in a good way.

Here's what I heard McCain say:
"I'm full of shit and have no reasoning for my ideology. Would anybody else like more shit? I've got plenty more!"

In terms of the military itself, it seems Defense Secretary Gates is now a firm believer in Obama and will do whatever the president tells him to do. He stood and clapped when the DADT repeal was announced at the SOTU. You also have Admiral Mullen of the Navy. Although he's officially "neutral" as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, he has pretty much revealed his personal opinion by signing off on a newspaper editorial last year calling for lifting the ban. General Schwartz of the Air Force does not seem to care regardless and is reportedly close to Gates ideologically. Army Secretary John McHugh has come out against DADT - at least in principle - as well.
That's the 'sort of, maybe' pro-repeal side.
And then you have the trouble.
Army Chief of Staff General Casey has sent some fairly disturbing signals. He was the one who said this process might take decades rather than years and perhaps involve segregated units. And you have General Conway of the Marines, who was the protege of his notorious predecessor, Peter Pace. He seems to be against the whole idea completely.
Unfortunately, the Army and Marines do more on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan than the other two services. And their objections raises seriously questions. Obama will have to get McHugh to shut Casey up. But that's easier said than done. Casey is more dangerous than Conway because he pretends to be reasonable even while setting up roadblocks that are impossible to traverse. Whereas Conway just says no to everything and is transparently homophobic.

Teams of four to five poets square off against each other, reading individually or in various combinations. Poems can't be more than three minutes long. Judges are chosen at random from the audience.

Fight pro-homo yellow journalism/research: the claim that “300 language experts have been fired under DADT, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic” relies upon a mendacious representation of data found in a 2005 GAO report that examines separations for homosexual conduct over the 10-year period 1994-2003. Even a cursory reading of that report reveals that few, if any, of the 300-plus individuals could conceivably be deemed “experts” – many didn’t even complete their language training. And of the over 50 (actually 54) ostensibly fluent in Arabic, only 20 achieved any sort of proficiency at all and none of these scored high enough to be considered fluent in the language.
The only way pro-homos can argue policy is by lying.

Sorry to burst your bubble Asessandra...I read the report too. You can interpret it your way as a homophobe, but the report distinctly referenced 300-plus "experts". Twist it anyway you like...but lying is lying...and you just got caught!
