Adam Lambert on the Moment His Dad Caught Him with Gay Porn

Adam Lambert talks make-up, Michael Jackson, Madonna, coming out of the closet, his parents, being a role model for younger gay kids, American Idol, and his album and its cover art on Fuse's On the Record.

Lambertcrotch He describes the moment his dad discovered him watching gay porn: "He just said to me, 'That's your business. That's okay.' He didn't make me feel ashamed for it, which is actually pretty amazing. That's a big deal, because that was a scary, scary moment. I was discovered. My secret. I don't think [my mom] was in denial at all. I think she always knew. When I was playing in her make-up drawer, that was probably a tip. And she talked to some people that she knew and the consensus was, don't push him. He'll come to you."

Lambert also talks about the American Music Awards moment:

"Obviously the real difference is that I'm a gay dude. You know what I mean? And I'm not a woman 'feigning' lesbianism. I think it got a little too real for people, maybe. And also I think, in that moment, the lyrics of the song are sexual in nature - it has a double meaning - I'm gonna put on a show. I'm gonna give it to you, but the double meaning is I'm gonna hold you down and give it to you. When I was in that moment I was in an audience of industry people and other artists. That's who I was looking at in the audience. That's who I was thinking about, that I was playing to. If there were families in the front row, and children I'd probably would have had a different energy going on, but I just didn't think about it. I was in the moment."

  1. I like that while he's willing to explain why he does something or what his motivation was, Adam isn't apologetic for what he's done.

It's high time that we had a gay performer who doesn't try to come off practically asexual just so bigots won't feel uncomfortable.

  3. I really like Adam Lambert too, I like how he isn't dumbing down his homosexuality at all. But, who hasn't had their gay porn found by their Dad?!

  6. Love the Lambert, too, but I gotta give some love to the gorgeous Touré who is interviewing him. Incredibly handsome and a talented writer-- I saw him read from his last book when I lived in NYC.

  7. God I love him. Sometimes I wonder - what it is like being a gay teen these days with out, proud, and REAL role models with Adam Lambert? Even compared to 10 years ago when I was 18, the difference is just so huge.

Spot on. What a difference he would have made had he come out then... or now officially, for the matter, but.

I am not a fan of Lambert's music, but he gets props for me for sticking to his guns regarding the AMA flap.

Funny story going back to Ricky. In the late '90s Martin mania, I was walking down the street having just purchased some books and Ricky on the cover of Interview magazine. I was getting some cute boy attention walking home and thought I was the shit till I realized the men were gazing downward - at the magazine.

  10. Great interview. I am totally rooting for Adam. His latest single is "Whataya Want From Me". The music video debuts on Friday morning on VH1 (sometime between 6am to 10am).

  11. I really love that Adam is just so open and honest. He is very articulate, genuine, alpha and holds his own even under the insane bigotry that is directed toward him daily. If everyone could be this cool, calm, and collected off the cuff, the world would be a better place.

  13. Let's have ten more rock stars --and, why not, actors-- that are as confident and cool with their sexuality as this one, please.

  15. I am a straight woman, and I really appreciate Adam's candor. I have learned a lot from him, and gained more understanding of how difficult it is to be openly gay in this country. I never realized the extent and depth of the homophobia in this country. I am a Jr/Sr high school teacher, and feel that Adam is helping me to be more sensitive to the issues that some of my kids face. Thank-you, Adam. I am so dismayed by the hateful, ignorant bile that is spewed at you. I hope the respect, admiration and love that so many more feel for you will more than overpower it. Your courage amazes me.

  16. I wonder, what kind of gay porn did he have in his room? Hopefully some classy stuff, like Falcon Studios or Raging Stallion.
