WV GOP Fails to Force Vote on Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment

An attempt yesterday to force a vote on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage failed in the West Virginia House, the Charleston Gazette reports:

Wv  "GOP delegates unsuccessfully tried to force a floor vote on a bipartisan resolution (HJR5) called the 'Marriage Protection Amendment.' The proposal calls for a statewide referendum on whether to amend West Virginia's constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. This week, Republicans launched a push to make the House vote on measures they say Democrats have allowed to die in the legislative process. They want to do that by 'discharging' bills from committees, bringing them directly to the floor for a vote. Except for Delegate Tom Louisos, D-Fayette, the House's Democratic majority on Tuesday voted to postpone consideration of the Republican motion to discharge the marriage amendment. Later, the committee that controls the flow of bills decided to keep that motion off the House's agenda."

It's worth noting that Republicans aren't working alone to try and "protect marriage" in WV: "Half of the six of sponsors of this year's 'Marriage Protection Amendment' are Democrats, but many Democrats likely do not want to vote on the controversial issue."

  1. Gosh, there must be a 100% graduation rate from the high schools in West Virginia, 100% full employment at jobs paying a living wage, 0 crime, 0 pollution, and health care coverage for all for the Republicans to finally take the time to tackle this most pressing of all issues before them. It's so unlike them. /sarc

  3. THANK YOU, Towleroad, for bringing this to the attention of you readers. Yesterday when the issue had come up, there were nasty comments here about "the toothless wonders...bigoted A-holes of w.Va.... that redneck hillbilly place." And YET, believe it or not, there are LGBT West Virginians and LGBT-FRIENDLY West Virginians who continue to work tirelessly to defeat such anti-Gay "marriage amendments." Remember that such amendments have been PASSED in a lot of states that might be considered more "progressive" than West Virginia. So I hope people will give credit where credit is due, before resorting to the predictable nasty stereotypical remarks, OK?

  4. The comment above by "SID" is an example of what I mean. West Virginians are not different from people in any other semi-rural state, and yet "SID" has to have his laughs at our expense. Trust me, such comments serve only to demoralize those of us in West Virginia's LGBT community who really are trying to make a difference. Give it a rest, OK?

  6. DEAR DISGUSTED AMERICAN: Yes, the people trying to discriminate against LGBT people WILL be back, not only in West Virginia but every other state. And you are absolutely right in fighting back. But to paint all West Virginians with the same nasty, stereotypical comments just because of the actions of some bigoted, pandering politicians isn't helping.

  7. Don't be so thin-skinned, Chuck. After all, it's not like you've got a domestic partner registry in WVa either. Face it, WVa is one of the more backward states in the country, even if you don't fit that model.

And I am appreciative of those members of our community fighting the good fight in these smaller communities. We need you out there!

...just get past the damaged ego thing.
