I know it sounds callous, but I'm not incredibly surprised that all those people simply walked by that homeless man. There didn't seem to be any visible blood. I've seen homeless people lying on the ground in Toronto and no one gives them a second glance. You think, "I wonder if that guy is dead?" but chances are they're probably not. This man was not so lucky.

Honestly, what the fuck is wrong with people?
Some days I'm ashamed to be part of this species.

Well the next time I see a motionless person on the street I'll prod them to make sure they're not dead.

the sadder part of this obscene affair is that the man was killed for helping a stranger, but no one returned the favor. he bled out on the street like an animal. i know that people don't like to "get involved," but for cripes sake! wtf?! are we becoming so desensitized by ubiquitous and random violence that we are losing our humanity? why did the woman he rescued not help him or call the police?
this kind of shit leaves me nonplussed and dismayed.

It is sad, but I can understand why some of them walked by. You see the homeless all over NYC, and yes, sometimes they are sleeping/passed out on the sidewalk in bizarre places like this. (And, having been attacked and almost assaulted by a crazy homeless person before, I can say that not all of them are down-on-their-luck teddy bears, and "getting involved" maybe isn't always the best idea.) However, I do not understand why the people who shook him (or turned him over, and surely saw the stab wounds) wouldn't call the cops. And it makes it all the more sad that he was stabbed defending an attack on a woman. He didn't deserve to die like that.

What happened to the woman he defended in the attack? Did she leave without calling police? Did she not realize her defender had been stabbed? Or did she use his intervention as an opportunity to just flee the scene? Or did he leave the scene of the fight after intervening and collapse somewhere else?
Like others, I've seen homeless men in the middle of the sidewalk and had difficulty figuring out whether there's an emergency or not. I think the difficulty for most people is that it requires actually speaking to the person on the ground, seeing if they can respond and whether they ask for help or not. And most of use have been conditioned to not speak to the homeless. Twice I've been close to calling 911 when a homeless guy wouldn't respond when I spoke to him, but both times the security guard for a nearby building came out and interacted with him a little more aggressively, shaking him awake.
