George ‘Rentboy’ Rekers: Statements from Family Research Council, NARTH, and Rekers Himself

UPDATED

George Alan Rekers, the "ex-gay" Christian activist caught returning from a vacation with a 20-year-old man he met on Rentboy.com, posted a statement on his website today:

Rekers

A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip. Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. His family, local friends, and even another university professor colleague have offered to accompany him on trips to lift luggage. Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant.

LATE yesterday, Rekers revised the statement to read as follows:

A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip. Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. His family, local friends, and even another university professor colleague have offered to accompany him on trips to assist him in his travel. Dr. Rekers found his recent travel assistant by interviewing different people who might be able to help, and did not even find out about his travel assistant’s Internet advertisements offering prostitution activity until after the trip was in progress. There was nothing inappropriate with this relationship. Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant.

The Family Research Council, of which Rekers was a founder, also released a statement, via Talking Points Memo, saying it is "not surprising" when a Christian leader is hypocritical (!?!) and that Rekers is "fallen":

In the past 24 hours FRC has received calls regarding Dr. George Rekers and his connection with the Family Research Council. After reviewing the historical records we did verify that Dr. Rekers was a member of the original Family Research Council board prior to its merger with Focus on the Family in 1987.

Reports have been circulating regarding Dr. Rekers relationship with a male prostitute. FRC has had no contact with Dr. Rekers or knowledge of his activities in over a decade so FRC can provide no further insight into these allegations.

While we are extremely disappointed when any Christian leader engages in the very activities that they "preach" against, it is not surprising. The Scriptures clearly teach the fallen nature of all people. We each have a choice to act upon that nature or accept the forgiveness offered by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and do our best to ensure our actions, both public and private match our professed positions.

The FRC had to "review its historical records" to know that Rekers was a founder? Here's a screenshot I clipped from a June 2008 archive of its site (thanks to one of our readers). Info regarding Rekers has been scrubbed from FRC's site since the scandal broke.

Finally, the "ex-gay" organization National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), where Rekers serves on the Board, released this statement to a Miami New Times reader:

You have as much information as we do. Before this released we didn't have this much information. All we had was a simple accusation that he was with a "rent boy" so that was all we were able to talk about with him. His answers (as well as his demeanor) showed that the story wasn't exactly as it seamed [sic]. There are certain accusations that would and wouldn't surprise certain people about others. This comes as a complete surprise as Dr. Rekers is not only very old and in very poor health, but also very nice and soft spoken, so until we have further information or proof of this incident it remains rumor and speculation.

That statement from NARTH is one of the most unintentionally hilarious statements I’ve ever seen released from any organization. Bravo!!

  2. wtf says

so old, nice soft spoken people who may be in poor health don’t like some dick now and then? Is that it? Wow, that’s a surprise to the MILLIONS of senior citizens of the world.

Oh and I LOVE how they eat their own when this shit happens.

  3. Steve says

Go to the Wayback Machine (www dot archive dot org) and search what the FRC website looked like years ago – it goes back at least 12 years.

It looks as if FRC is doing a lot of scrubbing to get rid of all references to him. Go to the FRC website and send a query asking them about “Dr.” Rekers’ recent situation.

To me, this looks more like a legal matter than a political matter, so I went to the Florida Attorney General’s office complaint webpage:

    http://myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Attorney_General

so I could ask AG Bill McCullum, who is running for governor, if is his office going to:

    1. retract from the record the testimony of Dr. George Rekers, the state’s expert witness supporting the gay adoption ban

    2. Investigate Dr. George Rekers for solicitation of prostitution

    3. demand a return on the $87,000 of taxpayer money that the AGs office paid Dr. Rekers and his associate for their testimony.

You don’t have to go back very far to see what the frc.org website USED to look like. I went there the day this scandal broke, and Dr Reker’s information was there. Not today.

This is my shocked face -> :0

  6. BobN says

The shocking thing about this is that NARTH appears to have teensy-itsy-bitsy bit more honor that FRC.

Mind you, both organizations are scum, but at least NARTH isn’t in Silkwood-scrub mode.

  7. Loki7329 says

Please, I have a feeling FRC knew about Rekers a long time ago. They probably had a plan in place to deal with his inevitable outing. Neither organization is exactly leaping to his defense or expressing much outrage at his treatment in the media.

  8. ravewulf says

Talk about thrown under the bus!

I also love that even the FRC is easily able to admit that “when any Christian leader engages in the very activities that they “preach” against, it is not surprising”

  9. Harry says

Obviously he is a nut job just for the crazy shit he believes in. If it is true that he did get this guy from “RentBoy” then he is a total hypocrite. Who hires a 20yr to carry their luggage on their entire trip? Does he pay all these luggage handlers way?

  10. says

NARTH describes him as ‘very old?’ he’s 61. that’s not ‘very’ old. and what the heck does ‘soft spoken’ have to do with fucking and paying a rentboy while you’re fucking the entire gay community and breaking up families for your own self-loathing homo-hating agenda?

  11. Ted B. (Charging Rhino) says

Why not investigate him for perjury as-to his testimony before the Florida legislature under-oath.

Then throw him under the bus…..

  12. Rob says

If he really truly needed ‘assistance’ he would not have gone to the rentboy site; he would have gone through other channels to request a butler or some kind of man-servant to assist with luggage, etc. If this really was something along the lines of his attempt to educate the escort, it wasn’t carried out very well and obviously he didn’t get advice from his FRC bigots. He’s a hypocrite and I predict other ‘escorts’ to come out of the woodwork saying they were hired by him as well.

  13. JT says

Smallhandff : Well….I don’t know..when my grandfather was a poor teenager he worked as a caddy for some rich guy and they slept in the same hotel room when away on a tournament. ( Of course…the rich guy then tried to get my teenaged-grandfather to take his pants off and get in bed with him ).

  14. petes says

Dr. Rekers is not only very old and in very poor health, but also very nice and soft spoken …

Who would possibly have thought that a “very nice and soft spoken” never-married, middle-aged bachelor was gay? I am shocked!

  15. fsal says

Travel assistant? Really? What about skycaps, car service drivers, taxi drivers, hotel bellmen and others that can provide assistance with lifting luggage along the trip’s way? Um, yeah. They are probably not a 20 yr. old. twink though. Busted. Love it.

  16. walter says

duh never checked his references. i always go on a 10 day trip with someone i don’t know and pay their way. die the scumbag ever hear of luggage with wheels. 300-500 a day is alittle expensive when you can pay a skycap 2-3 a bag.how did them spend evenings reading from bible. this man is a total scumbag.

  17. jamal49 says

WOW! Nothing like kicking a man when he’s down. Nothing like a stab in the back from your Reich-wing buds after you’ve been busted for being an old and soft-spoken hypocrite. The closet: a terrible space to waste.

  18. ChrisM says

Has anyone asked this lying fool exactly why he would pay anyone $1200 per day plus all expenses to carry a few suitcases? Seems that this old closet case believes his phony story would pass without question but we’re looking at a freakin’ $20,000 baggage handler here. Who pays anyone that kind of cash and gets nothing but his “luggage” handled?

  19. says

“Love flies out the door when money comes innuendo”, to quote Marx (Groucho, of course). Notice the not so sly implication of “a nice man and soft spoken” — the old-fashioned polite way of saying “old queen.”

  20. seeking accurate info says

Towleroad: I don’t think Rekers has ever referred to *himself* as “ex-gay.” You might want to correct the initial sentence in this post.
