Catholic League’s Bill Donohue Writes About The Homosexual Crisis In The Catholic Church In The Washington Post

In a clear response to the latest scandal to hit the Catholic Church, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, who has in the past taken out full page ads in the New York Times defending the Pope, this time has decided to write a piece in the Washington Post. Donohue once again maintains that there isn't a pedophilia crisis in the Church, but a "homosexual crisis." In order to make his point clear, he uses alcoholism and people who are of Irish heritage as an example.

B

Writes Donohue

"Correlation is not causation; it is an association. So to say that there is a correlation between homosexual orientation and the sexual abuse of minors is not to say that being a homosexual makes one a molester. Indeed, as I have said many times, most gay priests are not molesters, but most of the molesters have been gay. In other words, although sexual orientation does not cause sexual abuse, the fact that there is a relationship between homosexuality and the sexual abuse of minors cannot be ignored in dealing with this problem."

"Think of it this way. We know there is a correlation between being Irish and being an alcoholic, but that doesn't mean all Irishmen are, or will become, alcoholics. But it does mean they have a special problem in this area. Does this now make me anti-Irish?"

Bill Donohue lying? NO! 98% of all pederasts (boy rapers) are straight, and do not have sex with men, because they aren’t attracted to men, and aren’t gay. Second, nearly 100% of pedophiles are heterosexual.

“…98% of all pederasts (boy rapers) are straight, and do not have sex with men, because they aren’t attracted to men, and aren’t gay. Second, nearly 100% of pedophiles are heterosexual.”

Although it is understood that the “majority” (>50 percent) of pederasts and/or pedophiles are heterosexual, I suspect that many on this blog would certainly appreciate the documentation and linked citations that support those rather extreme – and far beyond just “majority” specific – data points. Thanks.

Also, a clarifcation as to just what the difference is between the two statements: “98% of all pederasts (boy rapers) are straight,” and “nearly 100% of pedophiles are heterosexual” – other than close (+/- two percent) but nevertheless confusing redundancy?

Last and specific to the issue of both ephebophilia (statistically, I believe far more prevalent) and pedophilia (statistically, I believe far less) within the criminally corrupt organization known as the Roman Catholic Church, much of it is, indeed, between a man (priest)and a post-pubescent or mid-pubescent male (hence, ephebophilia), one might well argue that it does, indeed, include a homosexual dynamic on the part of the abuser. To ignore that is just myopic and intellectually dishonest.

‘We know there is a correlation between being Irish and being and alcoholic…’

This nothing more than a dated, demeaning stereotype from another era, much like Donahue himself in fact. And ‘we know’ Mexicans are lazy and the Polish stupid, right?

Yes, we Irish love our pints. But the alcoholic cirrhosis rate in Ireland is 20% lower than that of England, and almost 70% lower than its incidence in Scotland.

  4. Taylor says

“…the fact that there is a relationship between homosexuality and the sexual abuse of minors cannot be ignored in dealing with this problem.”

Of course Donahue doesn’t mention the straight priest who’ve been accused of sexually molesting little girls, because then he’d have to make the same statement about heterosexual priest.

The PROBLEM Bill, isn’t heterosexuality or homosexuality, it is the ridiculous and UNNATURAL vow of celibacy that is required to become a priest. If the church would allow its priest to behave like the HUMANS they are, I’m betting that there would be a steep decline in the number of molestation cases within the church.

  5. mike/ says

Donohue is, by my research, an Irish surname.

    Bill Donohue must be Irish.

    using his syllogistic logic:

“Think of it this way. We know there is a correlation between being Irish and being an alcoholic, but that doesn’t mean all Irishmen are, or will become, alcoholics. But it does mean they have a special problem in this area. Does this now make me anti-Irish?”

therefore, he’s right, it does not make him ‘anti-Irish’, but it DOES increase exponentially the chances that he is an alcoholic!

i mean, by his logic, not mine…

    my logic & my experience lead to show that the people who scream the loudest have something to hide about what they are screaming;

    both are very logical…

  6. says

OK, I’m not on the point but I have to say this :
I’m Irish; being Irish has nothing to do with drink or alcoholism; that’s another of your stereotypical slanders.
You Donoghue are a disgraceful, bigoted, cunt. Don’t ever claim Irish ancestry or affinity; we disown you, we abhor you, we are ashamed of you.And don’t ever come here; or i’ll be waiting with an axe !

  7. veg says

It reflects badly on the Washington Post that they would even allow such writing in their paper, even in the opinion section. Their standards for opinion writing are extremely low.

  8. Matt26 says

Will this scandal bring down the Catholic Church? I’ve been asking this in my mind ever since this awful story (finally) broke out.
The second question is: Is this all? Taylor wrote about priests accused of sexually molesting little girls, so I think not.
Then I ask: How much more the Catholic Church can take? My prediction is: not much.
About Phil Donahue’s argumentation: no logic found. Case for the Catholic Church closed: think not.

  9. TANK says

“Also, a clarifcation as to just what the difference is between the two statements: “98% of all pederasts (boy rapers) are straight,” and “nearly 100% of pedophiles are heterosexual” – other than close (+/- two percent) but nevertheless confusing redundancy?”

No. There’s a difference between a pedophile and a pederast, so it’s not redundant. A pedophile is non-specific about the gender of the victim, whereas a pederast pretty much is (male).

As for the source of the stats, let’s see, there was a study conducted in ’94 by carole jenny of the university of colorado health sciences center which revealed that 98% of the boys molested were molested by heterosexuals, and that 90% of all pedophiles are male.

  10. Justin Lippi says

You know I think it is high time we start wondering why Bill Donahue is completely and blindly obsessed with this idea that being gay is about the sexual act itself, that it ONLY has to do with the sex of the to people involved.

  11. TANK says

I realize that for many self hating homosexuals and those who were abused (and as a percentage of population, I think it would be a VERY EDUCATED guess to assume that more homosexual males were victims of childhood sexual abuse than heterosexual males), that it’s hard to believe because they’ve internalized misinformation about who gay men are. Also, many homophobic heterosexuals believe that gay men are child molestors…so, maybe that’s what’s going on here.

  12. says

Donoghue; the problem with you and your activists is that you are all customers of RentBoy.com or employ the services of Male Escorts to deliver services. Not there’s anything wrong with that but it’s a bit rich for old farts and two faced hypocrites like you to preach to the rest of humanity.

I know of no so called “connection” between the abuse of minors and homosexuality…..all the child abusers here are heteros and most sex abuse of children is by hetero parents within the home.
    Priests are just opportunists…
the Catholic Church has deliberately put boys in the feeding trough of priests…..if the Catholic Church had put girl altar girls in church the priests would have abused them. Their abuse is not homosexual but opportunosexual.

  13. says

The priesthood was the perfect calling for Catholic pedophiles, and for Catholic men who were ashamed of (in no small part because of their religious upbringing) and confused about their sexuality. A vow of celibacy probably seemed like an ideal cure for such men, until reality and desire intervened. And when it did, the problem was covered up, ignored, and allowed to continue for decade after decade. The Catholic Church fed boys and young men to their sick priests. Can’t blame us homos for that, you drunk old fool, Billy. It’s not a “homosexual crisis,” it’s a “Catholic crisis,” stupid.

As Taylor says, for the vast majority of men, celibacy is unnatural, as are Catholic teachings. How many healthy gay men with any measure of self-respect would enter the priesthood?

  14. Hue-Man says

Why am I not surprised that the third sentence in this hypocrite’s wiki entry (quoting the NYT) starts: “Donohue is divorced…”? Arsonist spokesman for the firefighter’s union? Vegan president of the cattlemen’s association?

Worse, like the litany of statements by his child-molester facilitators, it does nothing to advance their cause and, if anything, leads to further derision of their hate-filled homophobic and anti-women policy positions. Now he’s added Irishmen and alcoholics, both of which are heavily represented in the hierarchy of his corrupt church.

  15. Darren B. says

What Mr. Donohue is conveniently ignoring is the fact that as tragic as the actual abuse of children was what is more tragic is the number of victims would have been significantly less if the hierarchy had not consistently protected the abusers and relocated them to multiple locations. And I’m pretty sure most of them are good old heteros. Unless Mr. Donohue knows something about the Pope the rest of us don’t.

  16. says

The figures for child molesters claiming an adult orientation (there is a population that has no adult orientation) are pretty consistent across all the studies I’ve seen and match the figures issued by the FBI — between 1.5% and 1.8% of known child molesters are gay, which leaves 98%+ as straight. Box Turtle Bulletin has done an exhaustive survey on this topic: http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/Articles/000,002.htm

As for this particular nonsense, Donohue’s problems go a lot deeper than his self-avowed genetic predisposition to alcoholism. He’s using the usual mix of misrepresentation, faulty reasoning, and outright lies to build his case, which is, quite simply, defense of an institution that is more interested in preserving its authority and resources than actually solving one of its worst problems.

Maybe he can get a second job with the Boy Scouts of America.

  17. Bart says

Face it, the Pope coule be standing over a dead body with a smoking gun in his hand and Donahue would say, “The butler did it! Oh, and I think he’s gay.”

Sadly, the pedophilia is disgusting enough (and yes, most if not all pedophiles are straight men) but the most disgusting, henious actions have been of the Popes, and this Pope in particular, criminal actions in covering it up and moving these abusing priests over and over again so they can keep ruining the lives of children without consequence instead of owning up to the abuse.

And Donahue’s use of some ridiculous, washed out stereotype doesn’t make him right, it only makes him appear even more ignorant than I actually thought he was, and my opinion wasn’t that high in the first place. Asking the question about his erroneous, tiresome correlation about alcohol and Irish “Does it make me anti-Irish?” No, dumbshit, it makes you clearly a ridculous ass-clown and clearly the enemy of anything intelligent. It makes Donahue even more of a baffoon and an absurd, pathetic, laughing stock mouth piece for the Catholic Church.

Bill, before you die and head off to whatever just reward awaits you, do the right thing and instead of licking the asshole of one of the biggest, most disgusting criminals of modern time.

How proud Bill and his family of good Catholics must be…

  18. pete says

if he’s right (which I do NOT concede) that most of the RCC abuse was by gay priests, and we KNOW that most gay people are not pedophiles and we also KNOW that most pedophiles are straight, can’t we then conclude that the RCC turns celibate gay men into child molestors?

  19. Rucka says

How does Bill explain all the ‘miraculous’ pregnancies of all the Irish girls in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s that were later found out to have Priests for fathers????

  20. says

Not to get off topic, but I am more outraged by the fact that the first gay student body president at the University of Michigan – Chris Armstrong – hosted a gay orgy at his dorm and has sex in public places, such as “children’s playgrounds and churches.” Please visit “Chris-Armstrong-Watch.blogspot.com” for all the sickening details.

  21. dizzy spins says

If there is a connection between being Irish and having problems with alcohol (and I think that’s a myth), its likely caused by societal factors (the prevalence and acceptance of drinking).

As for the Church, priests generally spend time around young boys NOT young girls. So a man with a sexual interest in young girls wouldnt be drawn to the priesthood. Also, if there is a prepoderance of child molestation among gays, its probably their natural urge for consenting gay men has been twisted and deformed by societal and interal homophobia. I.E., instead of being out gay men living in the world, these guys retreat to a secret order where they can expresss immature/underdeveloped sexuality with little fear of repurcussions

  22. BDC says

The Catholic Church does not even sanction, support or comment on this idiot.

He’s just one guy at a computer, who has found media outlets for publicising his own opinions.

Why give this guy any attention, power or voice? The Catholic Church DOESN’T…..

    Yawn…He’s just another ignorant idiot.

  23. petes says

Correlation is not causation; it is an association. So to say that there is a correlation between being a Catholic priest and the sexual abuse of minors is not to say that being a Catholic priest makes one a molester. Indeed, as I have said many times, most priests are not molesters, but most of the molesters have been priests. 24. joe says

Donohue is a loser and a fool. Even if you agree with him that this is a homosexuality problem and not a pedophilia problem, it’s still a statutory rape problem if you have men having sex with children. People below the age cannot legally consent, so any sexual activity with them is a crime. So even if you accept his thesis, what remains is a widespread criminal problem that the Church knew about and did all it could to protect the perpetrators and screw over (literally) its victims.

  25. Wimsy says

There’s a a correlation between organized religion and bigotry. Does that make Bill a bigot? Yep.

He’s just plain stupid with a stubborn streak/
And if you listen to this fool/
You may grow up to be a mule.

  26. Garrett says

Donohue’s accusations aren’t so much logical conclusions as they are slanderous stereotypes. I guess he would also conclude that Hispanics make better domestic workers and gardeners, and the Chinese are better at getting your laundry clean. What an idiot!

  27. darkmoonman says

“… but most of the molesters have been gay.”

Only because the media forget/ignore the many girls who have been molested in favor of sensationalizing boy-rapist priests. Once again, the RCC needs a scapegoat since its actions can’t possibly be wrong, but Jews and Pagans aren’t convenient this time.

  28. Dave says

Chris-Armstrong-Watch.blogspot.com is a horrible hit job on a decent person written by a self hating homo. @ Anti-Armstrong is a right-wing tool that needs to comeo out and get a life.

  29. walter says

hey the new catholic power couple bill donohue and maggie the cow callagher. could it be any better. they spew hate they are divorced they both need beards they could shill for each other.

  30. jamal49 says

Gee, Bill, what about the men who molest girls (quite a few priests molested girls, probably more than they molested boys). Statistics would show that your “argument” is wrong. One must also take into account that a lot of people jumped on the “I was molested by a Catholic priest” bandwagon as soon as they heard money was involved. I’d say your “argument”, if not your “logic”, is about as fuzzy as your tongue, Bill. There is no “homosexual crisis” in the Church. There is a TRUTH crisis and a leadership crisis in the Church, much of which could be resolved if women were permitted ordination.

  31. TonyJazz says

Regarding ‘veg’s comment on the Washington Post: unfortunately that newspaper became an extreme right-wing paper right after 9-11 and has never returned to the center (or even, left)…

The Washington Post is just another yellow rag nowadays….

  32. Jerrry12 says

    COME ON!!! When is reality going to take effect? GAY PRIESTS DO NOT NEED TO BE PEDOPHILES FOR SEX BECAUSE THEY HAVE EACH OTHER. IT IS THE SO CALLED “STRAITS” THAT HAVE TO GO AFTER CHILDREN. (Unless there is a nunnery nearby}

  33. Chris from Co says

So using is Irish men logic can we say that we know the correlation between a preist and molesters, not saying every preist will molest a boy, but it does mean they have a special problem in this area. Good defence dude.
