Towleroad Exclusive: Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo Talk About Gay Parents, 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Towleroad correspondent Josh Helmin spoke with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo of The Kids Are All Right, which last weekend grossed $504,888 from just seven theaters in five markets (NY, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and SF), averaging $72,127, making it the best specialty debut of 2010.

The film deals with a pair of lesbian mothers (Annette Bening and Moore, raising two kids who arrange to meet their sperm-donor father, Ruffalo).

Helmin asked them about gay parents and 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'.

Says Moore of ignorance and DADT: "If you haven't ever met a gay person, or known a gay family...if you've never known anything that's different from you, you might think well, hmm... But the more you learn and the closer it is to you, I  think the more rapidly your ideas change."

Ruffalo speaks about his son who spends lots of time playing at a friend's home with two gay parents.

Adds Ruffalo: "My son, we live down the street from a gay couple and they have a boy. And my son has played with them for many years, and goes to their house for lunch, and hangs out. And not once has he ever come and said, 'Papa, why does he have two papas?' Because his house is no different than mine, and it's only conditioning that would make him aware of that. In the human heart we want to see more of what's common in each other than really what's uncommon."

  1. Mark Ruffalo just keeps getting hotter.

(And the title of the film is, ahem, "The Kids Are All Right.")

  2. I can't wait to see this movie. Hopefully it will get to sleepy Seattle soon (where, btw, we have the second highest per-capita level of gay couples in the US, after SF).
