Notre Dame Quarterback Dayne Crist Against Homophobia
The Chicago Tribune ran a piece recently on Notre Dame's new quarterback Dayne Crist, and his support for various causes, including stamping out homophobia.
On a July afternoon, Crist, a two-year starter at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High, arrived early for an appointment at the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, wearing red workout shorts and a black T-shirt. On the shirt’s front, in large white lettering, was a slogan: “StaND Against Hate.”
It was a week on campus dedicated to ending hate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Crist had a tough time remembering it. But then he has served McFlurrys to terminally ill children, worked with the homeless in San Jose, read to children in South Bend-area libraries and recruited 50-plus teammates to shave their heads in the name of childhood cancer research.
It all tends to blur together. Next thing you know, he will go to Africa to build libraries. No, really. He might do that.
Linebacker Manti Te’o labeled Crist “a perfect Notre Dame role model,” noting he often bails out less eloquent teammates in meetings with recruits’ parents, offering “those answers that you’re just like, ‘You’re the golden boy.’ “

Lovely young man with a great big heart.

Seems to be a genuine honest to goodness role model. Every success to him.

Ooh Mr.sexy Quarterback... I don't feel so good, I think I need a Mcflurry!

A fine example of the younger generation, who just don't care about other people's sexualities. It's a fact of life for them. Glad to see the world changing like this.

I can't wait for the day stories like this become "non-stories" and they fade into footnotes in our history.
I like the "global" thinking of this kid. I wish him all success in continuing to help out those in need.

Seeing this is much better than seeing Brady Quinn turn into John McCain's fluffer dring the presidential campaign.
Kudos to him.

In this case, I would call myself a Cristian.

Lovely statement by Crist, unfortunately, he goes to the most hateful scholl that isn't in Columbus, Ohio.

Wow...hot, well-spoken, progressive...sheesh...swoon.

scholl s/b school.

This is welcome news. Alas, I think he will be transferring to another school at some point. Notre Dame is not known for tolerating tolerance very well.

I'd hold back the breathless applause till we know more. There are plenty of people against physically assaulting us who still don't think we should have the same legal rights, and this could well be one of those times. We've got to stop sezing on throwaway lines in articles about something else and using them to make unsupported assertions about support for gay rights.

If only all athletes could be this well rounded. And to @Chitown Kev it's better that he go to the "most hateful school" to spread his positive influence rather then just ignore the school. You don't runaway from a problem, you make it your friend.

Jesus @BGKEV - Debbie Downer, much? For a college football quarterback - at an extremely conservative university - to so openly advocate ANY sort of pro-gay cause is pretty damn impressive. Good for him - that's a brave move.

Finally some good news. Maybe there's hope for this country yet, if there are more guys like this one willing to stand up for human dignity, equality and fairness.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame HIGH (emphasis mine)? Not so sure we're talking about the same Notre Dame here.
Either way, good for him.

When did Towleroad become HUFFINGTON POST? Great young man - but what a misleading headline -- NOTRE DAME -- we would have clicked on it anyway - if it was accurately titled HIGH SCHOOL QB FIGHTS HOMOPHOBIA -
also - he doesn't really remember doing it. What about this young man's extremely passive activism or rather the combination of factors made this post worthy? And - What sort of crumbs of validation are we looking for - or is this because of the "cute young athlete factor" --
Just a disappointing post content wise and headline cheat wise.

It's not a misleading headline at all. He did attend Sherman Oaks Notre Dame for high school, but is now the starting quarterback at the University of Notre Dame.
Any time you have college athletes demonstrating some sort of move toward acceptance of gays, it's something to be encouraged.

He is a positive role model we need more men like him.

Those thinking he will or should transfer are missing the point. MLK never marched through Roxbury, Southside Chicago, or Watts for freedom. He took it right to the face of the hateful, over and over, right in their fucking front yard. We need to do the same. Stay at Notre Dame, dude. We need you there, in the face of the ignoramuses. Bravo.
