Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Peter LaBarbera: DADT Repeal Would Destroy Culture, Weapons

LaBarbera-751700.gif There's nothing more flamboyant and over-the-top than a right wing crusader. No, not even a drag queen.

With all their self-righteousness indignation, social conservatives provide us, the viewing public, with some real gems of what would otherwise be performance art. Take, for example, Peter LaBarbera, leader of the Americans for Truth.

He's just full of outrageous musings, like when he described San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair as "the most immoral and outrageous sexual behavior that ever disgraced the streets of any American city."

Few of LaBarbera's past hits, however, have been as entertaining as his theory about Don't Ask, Don't Tell's inevitable, yet slow-going, repeal.  According to LaBarbera, it's all part of a plot -- and why wouldn't it be?

"America does not need a post-moral military, but it may be what we deserve," said LaBarbera this weekend while discussing lesbian Maj. Margaret Witt, whom the Air Force has been ordered to reinstate.

"The irony," LaBarbera concluded, "is that if President Obama and his determined 'queer' allies succeed in turning our Armed Forces into a driving force for immorality, it will only hasten the deterioration of our culture to the point, ultimately, where weapons and soldiers cannot save us from oblivion. If America rejects God, her prospects are dim."

While my years on the LGBT beat have trained my brain to translate most of the right wing's queer codes, I'm still a bit stumped as to how weapons would help "save" a culture from the homosexual scourge.

Unless, of course, LaBarbera means to use the weapons on us. If that's the case, his theory puts gay rights on the same monstrous level as Godzilla. And that's the truth.

  1. After all these recent outings of homophobes, I now just assume that LaBarbera is another closet case.

  4. "He's just full of outrageous musings, like when he described San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair as 'the most immoral and outrageous sexual behavior that ever disgraced the streets of any American city.'"

And the whole time he was there, he had to keep ducking away to furiously beat himself off. Purely for research purposes, of course.

  8. As I read LaBarbera's quoted statement I began to read between the lines. I thought it would be amusing and informative to read and show what he means by weapons and soldiers

(In parentheses: my interpretation of his between-the-line thoughts)

"The irony," LaBarbera concluded, "is that if President Obama and his determined 'queer' allies succeed in turning our Armed Forces into a driving force for (what I define as) immorality, it will only hasten (my efforts to impose) the deterioration of (y)our culture to the point, ultimately, where (even) weapons and soldiers cannot save (the) u(.)s(.) from (my righteously imposed) oblivion (by the hand of Christian Soldiers that I hope someone else will finance and lead). If America rejects God (as I personally define God), Her prospects are dim."

  9. Funny, I can't find any reference to his military background, or any link to what he'd know about the issue.

  11. I know what someone's getting for Christmas... a jar of Crisco and some opera length gloves. But only if he's "good"

  12. I'm almost sure he's got some serious psychology at work. I just listened to several interviews with him, and you can hear that certain kind of inflection in his voice. A lot of talk about teenage boys having sex with other teenage boys... and how naughty that is!

  13. And mrs. labarbera is confident that her husband was honest when he told her that the largest penis on record was only four inches long...

But honestly, couldn't you have gotten a more unflattering photo? They abound--he's one ugly fuckin' dude, and you could easily scare up one of his more ah, shall we say, accurate pictures. For example, him sweating bullets at a gay s&m convention, learning some new ties for his "blog"...

He's really doing the lord's work hiding out at gloryholes and playing peekaboo at bathhouses. Yeesh, or else it gets the hose again... Sleep easy, folks: these streets are clean!

  15. When i first came across The Peter he was promoting himself as an "Ex-Gay." It's pretty obvious what that means. Yet there's never been anyone quite so flamboyantly self-loathing as this freak -- projecting all his problems onto a world that has thanks to the gya rights movement and its spectacular success moved well past them.
IOW he's one step lower than a sideshow "geek" eating the heads off of live chickens.

  16. To fully understand what LaBarbera is saying here you have to understand the belief these people have that thier god will punish America if it embraces gay people. I grew up in a conservative christian home so I had a lot of exposure to these odd beliefs.

so when he says "it will only hasten the deterioration of our culture to the point, ultimately, where weapons and soldiers cannot save us from oblivion." the oblivion he is talking about isn’t gay people, rather it’s the punishment allowed or caused by his own god for the nations acceptance of gay people.

Essentially it’s the exact same philosophy that the Westboro Baptist freaks have but Peter LaBarbera just is more cryptic with the message.

  17. Let me get this:
This guy thinks that gays in the military will be "post moral"....whatever that is.
The current news is of soldiers killing for sport, cutting fingers off like scalps and having pictures taken with their trophies as if it's a hunting kill.
And open gays would make the military "post moral" ?
Gays would affect morale and cohesion ?

Have the lunatics taken over the asylum ?

  19. It's hard for me to comprehend how you can misunderstand the "weapons and soldiers cannot save us" line. He means that if gayness becomes too accepted, we're in for spiritual ruin which earthly things can't save us from. Your last paragraph is just complete non sequitur.

  21. WTF was he doing at Folsom?

Doing research from the closet, no doubt.
