Westboro Protests Met With Opposition, Hugs and Hogs

Wbcprotest

Pennsylvania's Trinity High School may have had early dismissal to thwart Westboro Baptist Church's protests yesterday, but scores of other Americans offered counter demonstrations to fight the anti-gay church's message.

A mass of students at Ohio State University gave out cookies and hugs to fight WBC with love. In Maryland, meanwhile, another large group of protesters also gathered to shout down the comparably small WBC.

The most creative objection, however, was at Arlington National Cemetery, where a group of motorcyclists revved their engines to drown out the WBC's protest of a fallen Navy SEAL.

One of the motorcyclists remarked, "I’m a vet myself, and I think what these people over here are doing is horribly wrong… If you want to protest a war, you do it with government officials, not with the soldiers who died for you; you don’t disrespect them and their families with such hatred.”

Sure, motorcycle engines may not be the most soothing method of confronting the Westboro Baptist Church, but it's reassuring to know that unknown numbers of Americans are in united in opposition to this hateful congregation.

  1. I think the motorcycle revving is brilliant! Protests against WBC should not become violent, but no reason they should be soothing either. The visibility of WBC right now is absolutely related to the Supreme Court's consideration of the case involving them. Free speech versus free speech only affirms this basic civil right.

  2. The motorcyclists are the Patriot Guard Riders. They were founded specifically to counter protest the WBC by revving their engines to drown them out.

  3. Do not be deceived.

Your value as a person in the eyes of others is in no way raised because the WB heathens are being protested against for their stance against the military.

  4. Who is attempting to deceive anyone? I'm far more interested in successful counters to the WBC than I am concerned about how the Patriot Guard Riders or any others judge my "value as a person". I respect what the PGR do, and if they don't return the sentiment then too damn bad for them, no sleep lost here.

  5. Don't be so sure that all of these people are uniting with us in opposition to WB's hate. Some of them are ONLY counter protesting them over their disrespect of soldiers.

Where were those motorcycle riders when FOR YEARS, WB picketed at the funerals of gay men and AIDS victims? NO ONE was uniting with us in fighting these douche bags until they started demonstrating at soldiers' funerals. I've even heard some of them say that they agree with WB on the gay thing but don't think they should use good soldiers' funerals to get their message out.

  6. While it's nice to have a group of vets on motorcycles protesting WBC, the reality is that had the WBC not targeted vets' funerals, these same men would probably be on the side of the WBC's protests at the funerals of gay men. I didn't see any of the "Hogs" protesting WBC when WBC was desecrating the funerals and burials of gay men.

  7. One has to have pity and forgiveness for organizations and members thereof of the like of the WBC. If the leaders and members of the organization had true love and affection for the members of their own families, and neibours (sp?), they would not have time to think about, or to worry about the lives of people they do not even know and will never come in personal contact with.

I wonder how many of the WBC adults are members of their local PTA, Boy and Girl Scouts, Hospital Auxileries(sp?),YMCA, Veterans Groups, Garden Clubs, invite a few friends over for an evening of cards or conversation (Or are invited out to others), have personal hobbies or interests that enrich their lives and immediate family members?

In other words; Do they have interests other than destroying the lives and pleasures of people they do not even know?
