Watch: FIFA President Sepp Blatter Jokes That Gays Should 'Refrain from Sexual Activities' at 2022 Qatar World Cup

FIFA President Sepp Blatter was asked about gays who would like to go to Qatar for the World Cup in 2022 but are too afraid because homosexuality is banned in the country.

After laughing and looking around, Blatter responded, jokingly, "I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities."

He quickly clarified, but not before media took note of his rather tasteless joke.

Added Blatter: "We are definitely living in a world of freedom and I'm sure when the World Cup will be in Qatar in 2022, there will be no problems. You see in the Middle East the opening of this culture, it's another culture because it's another religion, but in football we have no boundaries. We open everything to everybody and I think there shall not be any discrimination against any human beings be it on this side or that side, be it left, right or whatever."

Former NBA star John Amaechi slammed Blatter:

ÔÇťAnything less than a full reversal of his position is unacceptable and if the FA and football associations around the world fail to acknowledge this insult, they too will be complicit. If sport cannot serve to change society, even temporarily during the duration of an event like the World Cup that invites the world to participate, then it is little more than grown men chasing a ball and we should treat it as such."

  1. "but in football we have no boundaries. We open everything to everybody and I think there shall not be any discrimination against any human beings be it on this side or that side, be it left, right or whatever."

Dozens of closeted players beg to differ.

  2. The decision to have the World Cup in Qatar clearly disregarded their lack of Human Rights for gays. Once again, we see a decision made for financial gain over that of human gain.

  3. Agreed it was a bad decision to have it there, but it IS going to be there and what he said is true.

Muslim countries, many of them, have the death penalty for homosexuality. Watching a soccer game isn't worth anyone's life, not to mention why give money to a country that is dangerously misogynistic and homophobic?

  4. @GRINCH: but he didn't say gays shouldn't attend and spend money. He implied that gays absolutely should attend, should spend money - and should not have sex while there.

  5. Blatter is a soulless vessel of greed. It is hardly a coincidence that two oil-exporting nations with dictatorial governments were announced as consecutive World Cup hosts. "We are definitely living in a world of freedom"--I want to piss all over his face.

  6. He's Swiss. That's all you need to know.

Switzerland is one of the world's great money launders.

Switzerland makes a big song and dance about brokering peace around the world, being one of UN headquarters, being neutral and allegedly non-aligned. Switzerland also makes money hand over fist in dealing with every dictator or outlaw nation in the world and the international arms trade.

Switzerland shamelessly engaged both desperate refugees who escaped Nazi Germany, and the Nazi regime itself.

Switzerland is held up as the epitome of European culture and refinement, yet only gave females the right to vote in 1972.

  7. While his remarks show his ignorance, the other side of the coin is that the Olympics are a hotbed of sexual activity. A friend of mine who participated in the Seoul games said they handed out condoms everywhere, and there was a lot of sex going on - and not just hetero sex.

  8. Im just going to refrain from going.

Each country in the world has the right to it's own customs. It's customary in my culture to keep my families double income no children high spending asses in places that don't dictate what I can do in my bedroom.

I do hope that Qatar enjoys the drunken pasty hooligans though. At least when they are beating the locals and pissing in your streets you can rest assure that none of them are staying in 5 star hotels and eating at your finest restaurants.

And it's not just us gays. Good luck encouraging women to go. The US consular affairs has this to say 'Local and third-country-national young men have been known to verbally and physically harass unaccompanied, expatriate women'.

If you run with the bull of capitalism, you also get the horns.

  9. Notice there was a LOT of laughter in that room after the question.

  10. What would attract ANYONE to a shithole country like Quatar with it's 120+ degree weather,it's religious fanatics and it's disdain for gays and intelligent women.
Take your bribe money Mr. Blatter and enjoy it. Greed kills.

  11. Given the current birth rates among native Swiss and the current rate of Muslim immigration, it is far more likely that in 2022 Switzerland will be more like Qatar than Qatar becoming more like Switzerland.
