This campaign has good intentions, but seriously, stop it already. I think gay kids got the message already. We want to hear from celebrities and presidents and big time people that it gets better, not from every Tom, Dick, and Harry in the street. Who’s next on these It Gets Better videos, Eric Cartman?

Agree, it’s difficult to not be a cynic. And ya, for the campaign the timing is late. But isn’t this more than just a campaign?

This video is important and historic. How many other administrations have video of significan # of WH employees sharing openly their personal stories? Good people. Real people.

I think it’s more important to have “regular” people discuss their lives in the It Gets Better Videos. Not everyone will grow up to be famous. But it is even better when they happen to discuss the issues WITH the President of the United States in the same video.
This is historic, and this is the only government and country in the world whose leaders in power would release a video so explicitly on gay issues like this.

“this is the only government and country in the world whose leaders in power would release a video so explicitly on gay issues like this.”

Um, there are plenty of countries in the world that could release a video at least as “explicit” as this. Iceland, for example, has a lesbian Prime Minister.

Why are gay men always given these backwater positions in the government? I want to see a gay Defense Secretary of State! I tell you a gay man will be a Secretary of State before we can even dream of a gay President.

  7. Mike C. says

@Mike, Iceland may have a gay head of government, Germany may have a gay foreign minister, Paris may have a gay mayor. BUT, I do doubt that their governments and heads of state would take such an explicit and outward step supporting gay issues on video. Europe is more accepting and laissez faire of social issues in some ways, but they typically do not address social or controversial issues like this head on. That’s something only the United States does.
Don’t be afraid to be proud of your country or government sometimes!
