1. Don in Alaska says

I love the Anoymous Hackers! Taking the Westboro websites down is only a temporary solution, but at least it pisses the Westboro creeps off!

  2. mike/ says

    agreed, attention is what they crave, but i wish ‘anonymous’ luck;

i’ve always wondered why Westboro almost exclusively cites the epistles of Saul of Tarsus & the Old Testament almost exclusively in their rants.

they ignore the message of love & acceptance that JC talks about in the gospels.

coincidence? i think not. as i recall there were only two things that JC spoke in strong negative terms about – divorce & usury, especially in the temple.

  3. Brad says

Oh my goodness! I’ve been trying to get on their site and all I get is “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”.

  4. says

You see, this is why I pray to Mudkipz.

Also, here’s a fun little game: reread WBC’s letter to anonymous, only this time read it in Paul Lynde’s voice. It makes SO much more sense that way.

  5. Bobby says

The Westboro Baptist Church should be razed with every member of it inside when it happens. The poison these people spread is detrimental to the world and they should no longer be allowed to operate. Screw free speech, screw freedom of religion, a line has to be drawn and I hope the internet group ANONYMOUS does what they say they’ll do and shut them down completely.

  6. HadenoughBS says

WBC’s hateful homophobic website remains accessible as of 11:22 AM CT Sunday, February 20th. OK, Anonymous, you can have at ’em now.

  7. Barry says

This is too delicious. Bearing no relationship to the Real Thing, the ungodly god of the WBC is about to get its unholy pie hole shut. I’m already dancing with laughter.

  8. Luminum says

You either believe in free speech and freedom of religion or you don’t. Their rights end where our rights begin, but nothing they do (besides possibly the funeral pickets) ever crosses that line and they know it. It may bother the hell out of us that they’re allowed to spew that kind of vitriol, but it’s also why we’re allowed to do the same against them. I don’t agree with ANONYMOUS’ actions (and seriously, how do they expect Westboro to respond), but I do know that Westboro is outmatched here, so it’ll be nice to see them get tech-destroyed.

  9. joe c says

God hates hackers now too? *sigh* Guess they gotta make more signs!

here’s hoping they know as much about th interwebs as they apparently know about visual design!

  10. Gino says

1st: I’m glad the god these people people in doesn’t exist.

2nd: I wish the hackers luck in showing Westboro that the 21st century is more powerful that the 1st century.

  11. candideinnc says

Westboro is just a crapper full of Santorum. Doesn’t bother me a bit that their freedom of speech is impaired. If all you spew is venom, it is fitting someons should shut you up.

  12. AdamKW says

I just wish that Westboro would stop lying and implicating God in their agenda. God doesn’t hate fags (or anyone else for that matter), Westboro Baptist “Church” does!

  13. DG says

“You either believe in free speech and freedom of religion or you don’t.”

That’s it in a nutshell. All those applauding this action might not feel the same way if someone shut down sites like Towleroad for what they would believe are the same reasons.

  14. says

“Freedom of Speech” is a myth.

Speech is Power and cosnequently fought over as such. “Money Talks” consequently those of us without it don’t get to speak quite as loudly as those that have.

Especially those who don’t have to pay taxes ie. Religion.

Right-wing hysteria over taxation stems largely from the fact that The Jig is Up and those of us who actually have a Moral Center will be deminding in ever-increasing numbers that those who believe in a Big Invisible Bi-Polar Daddy Who Lives in The Sky will have to pay their fair share.

  15. candideinnc says

Freedom of Religion in America has become freedom to discriminate. And I will not defend Catholics and Baptists and Muslims and Mormons and all the hateful evangelicals like the Westboro group. I want secular government. Screw religion!

  16. DG says

I am FULLY onboard with the secular government/tax religion idea – but we have a LONG way to go in this country for that to be even remotely considered.

  17. Eric says

I agree with DG. I find it odd that the self-proclaimed “Voice of Free Speech” is shutting down WBC’s website.

  18. Brian says

If the situation was reversed and WBC could shut down gay sites, they would. They started this war, let’s finish it.

After the anti-gay movement went after our basic rights as US citizens, all “civility” disappeared. Nobody’s defending our 10th and 14th amendment rights vis-a-vis marriage (except in court) and the right-wing machine has launched a relentless and unending campaign of well-funded hate against us.

So we must respond. With greater effectiveness than the bigots.

Rick Santorum’s problem is a great example of how we can respond. His political career is over. Next, WBC. After that, any politician, regardless of party, who doesn’t stand for us.

We need the political establishment to fear our power of expression, balloting and articulation more than the trailer-park denizens they “represent.”

  19. anon says

While this is a tad immature by the big A, WBC is no match for their hacking skills. David v Goliath? Look up HB Gary to see what Anonymous can do.

  20. says

Take em down boys !!! Hate speech is not free speech and can NOT be tolerated .. Do what you can to interrupt them for as long as you can .. I have however just come from their web site and it’s still up and running ..

  21. Anonymous says

“I love the Anoymous Hackers! Taking the Westboro websites down is only a temporary solution, but at least it pisses the Westboro creeps off!”

There’s a little bit more to it than that…

  22. patrick nyc says

It’s one thing for Westboro to call us fags, or to protest funerals, but to call these hackers ‘pimple-faced nerds’ is just too much.

  23. BartB says

Ohhhhh, I wonder if Anonymous is laughing as hard as I am. I wonder if Anonymous is afraid of the fourteen pimply faced, toothless, inbred rednecks that make up the Westboro Baptist Church and their stupid signs.

You know how you can tell God has a sense of humor? He lets these Westboro people walk the earth and so far no meteor or giant foot has come whizzing out of the sky to take them out. God lets them assemble so the rest of us feel better about ourselves. And we should. Even though Westboro sets the bar for human behavior in the gutter.

  24. Anonymous says

Don’t you see how happy little Phelps is in this picture?

You know why she’s smiling? Because they’re making bank on the idea of someone violating their civil rights. They sue everyone and win. They most likely laugh about it.

    They’re not worth our time.

  25. Pira says

So 4chan is finally gonna do a big raid on them, huh? Lulzy, normally they lack the attention span to keep anything like this up for any significant period of time. Calling them out like this might stir them up enough to take it to the next level.

Still, the most they are probably going to achieve is to shut down their websites for a while. If they luck out, they’ll hack their passwords and erase everything. I’m all for taking their filth off the internet, but what they really should be focusing their effort on is a mass mailing to the American media outlets demanding a blackout on coverage of the WBC.

What I’d really love to see is a counter-protest like what they managed to organize against Scientology, only waayyy bigger.

  26. says

I’ve been seriously digging the work of Anonymous for a while now… but if they do this, I’ll love them all the more. The Westboro bigots are already in the stone-age when it comes to their humanity, may as well put them there when it comes to their internet presence… and bonus points if they manage to gain access to Westboro’s emails and leak them like they did the corporate villains who were trying to ruin anyone who supported Wikileaks (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, go to Glenn Greenwald’s blog on Salon — it’s one of the most fascinating and scary stories to come out in the past year IMO, and it’s just at the tip of the iceberg).

  27. BobN says

Well, of course they’d say “Bring it”. They survive and thrive on lawsuits brought against those who abridge their constitutional rights and those who libel or slander them (ah, the irony).

Besides publicly declaring their intent to commit felonies which could easily fall under “terrorism” statues, the folks at “Anonymous” have just opened themselves up to litigation which will enrich the Phelpses.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  28. jexer says

    WBC are harmless clowns….
don’t empower them by making them martyrs!!!

Anonymous please…. go after NOM, AFA and those hatemongers that grow fat and wealthy off championing homophobia.

    their the real evil

  29. David says

Anonymous has issues a press release saying that this is all in fact a plot by WBC. WBC issues the fake Anonymous press release. Anonymous is in favor of free speech for all, including people they believe are abhorrent so it didn’t ring true to me from the get-go. WBC is doing this as a way to make money from law suits. See here:

  30. ratbastard says

    Who cares? These people are either;

Shills [even possibly using reverse psychology to get a point across]

It isn’t at all clear who exactly they are,as far as I know.

People have a constitutional right to protest, say mean spirited things, hold mean spirited signs. But I’m surprised there hasn’t been any major violence or backlash against them. We have become a PC, pussified society.

But the whole WBC thing stinks to high heaven.

  31. Tyler says

If you go look up half the scriptures on the their website there misconstrued, (Lev. 20:13; Rom. 1:32-are called dogs as filthy, impudent & libidinous) this is in reference to pigs, not sodomy…UGH these people are ridiculous.. I don’t hate…BUT I SERIOUSLY HATE THESE PEOPLE REALLY.

  32. DG says

“I’m surprised there hasn’t been any major violence or backlash against them”

I am, too. I was at Matthew’s funeral, and went up to them and looked in their eyes. An odd mixture of deadness with almost mirth – truly horrifying, actually. But I understood why that particular crowd didn’t know exactly how to respond.

However, it still boggles my mind that someone at one of the military funerals hasn’t mowed them down.

  33. steve says

Is it possible that “Anonymous” is Fred Phelps – and this is another attempt to raise money?

I’m not Machiavellian, but it would make sense – donations to Anonymous are, um, anonymous and you don’t know who you’re really giving to…..

  34. FunMe says

Somehow I do feel the ANONYMOUS threat is real and that they are NOT from the USA. Even better. Down with hate speech!

  35. Ian says

If this is legit, and it looks like it may not be, it’s just wrong. 1st WBC being so vile actually helps the cause of Equality. Their hate speech is so extreme and disgusting that it does cause many people to reevaluate their own thoughts and question if they really want to be lumped in with a hate group like WBC. 2nd, vile as their words are, it is free speech. If a group like ANONYMOUS, can take down WBC and other organizations in this way, what happens when they target someone or an organization you happen to agree with and support? It’s an ominous development. I hope it turns out to be a case of WBC fraud.

  36. FunMe says

Turns out it was NOT legit. Check out the letter from anonymous:

“While Anonymous thanks you for your interest, and would certainly like to take a break and have some fun with you guys, we have more pressing matters to deal with at the moment.
But, we will keep this application on file, and will certainly contact you if any openings become
    available in future.

Next time, don’t call us. We’ll call you.”

“In closing, let us assure you: We are not BAWWWING sissies, nor are we afraid of your false god; we’re just really busy. Stay tuned, and we’ll come back to play another day.
    We promise.”

  37. Randy says

Hah. These two groups deserve each other. Neither WBC nor Anonymous has created any lasting change, but the arrogance of both knows no bounds.

That said, I’m rooting for Anonymous. Perhaps they will grow a sense of determination and actually complete something they start, for once.

  38. Brian says

I just heard that Anonymous did not, in fact, write the original letter, though I’m trying to confirm that. According to a friend, Westboro created the letter themselves, as they felt the public was losing interest in them.

  39. says

@TYLER: most of scripture is a bad translation of crap. Don’t bother to try and make it sound better.

Remember, there are only 2 sins: dogma and weak coffee. And no religion too.

  40. Anonymous says

“I just heard that Anonymous did not, in fact, write the original letter, though I’m trying to confirm that. According to a friend, Westboro created the letter themselves, as they felt the public was losing interest in them.”

It’s unfortunate that you feel a posting on Anonnews is a statement from some organizing board of planners and sycophants in a board room (or basement for that matter).

What’s more unfortunate is the failure as a whole of the gay blogosphere in realizing that the Phelp’s and their ilk saw an opportunity to put “god” and “fag” in the same sentence to make some decent $$

We won this one. We had three days of a twitter freakout by the whole of WBC screaming “GOD IS ON OUR SIDE! YOU LOSE!” while their servers were up and down and up and down faster than Freddy’s shriveled cock when he dreams of bathhouses and poppers every night. I can’t wait until they receive the countless packages of free tampons, diapers, gay porn, and empty cardboard boxes in the mail.

They’re screaming victory while having only caused the sound of a thousand Lulz.

  41. Stephen says

Does anyone else here find the WBC immature use of language as hilarious as I do? I just get a chuckle when I read stuff like “Anonymous Coward Crybaby Hackers”. I acn’t take that pathetic excuse for a church serious anymore when I imagine 5 year olds writing their flyers.

  42. Bradley says

So, as an advocate of free speech and all that it entails, I cannot actually say that I’m in favor of the removal of this detestable, deplorable, unforgivably vitriolic group of hateful bigots’ websites. To paraphrase The American President (the movie) freedom of speech is also having to listen to people who advocate at the top of their lungs what you would renounce at the top of yours.
That being said, when Anonymous succeeds, I won’t feel the least bit upset and will most likely cheer for their achievement.

  43. says

The blog was absolutely fantastic! Lots of great information and inspiration, both of which we all need!b Keep ’em coming… you all do such a great job at such Concepts… can’t tell you how much I, for one appreciate all you do!

  44. ophu says

Fred Phelps has done so much to call attention to the sheer UGLINESS of homophobia that we should build a monument to him and call it “The Divine Fool”.

  45. says

WBC thinks it is smart but the smart ones are just biding time letting them play their cards first. Their day is coming. Need to show the world that Fred Phelps is a false prophet and Shirley Phelps is the whore of Babylon and they are all going to be in for a big surprise when god reaches down and swats them like the pesky little fries that they are.

  46. A Christian says

This group should be stripped of its very name and should be refered to as only WBC. They do not represent any organized Baptist group and are damaging the name and identy of many other people. I am a Christan and a Southern Baptist and want no affliation with them. (Southern Baptist have been around alot longer then WBC and should consider claming the “brand”) They do not represent the majority of people from the town of Westburo and are damaging the name that is home to so many people. They represet no organized church other than their own little group and are damaging the very word “church” which has connections with “sanctuary” and “fellowship” . Perhapes they should be held liable for damages? At least they should be stripped of the name. A small name with no affilations is fitting. WBC and nothing more.

  47. cb says

Westboro Baptist Church spreads its hate through picketing in our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration, attempting to create a confrontation. This is not a church, this is a hate group. This is not about protesting, freedom, or God. They are in it for the money and the press; this is a family law firm. They are not a “church.” It is a scam. They go after anything that can get them in the news. This is a family of lawyers using this “god hates you” thing to make money. It is time for this scam and the hate to end.
The church has received money from lawsuits and legal fees. For example, they sued the city of Topeka several times in the 1990s. WBC received $16,500, and is pursuing another $100,000, in legal fees for a case won in court. The WBC is considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore exempt from paying taxes!
Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church is shown admitting on camera that her oldest son was born out of wedlock. Hypocritical Phelps-Roper’s vocal condemnation on strangers having sexual congress outside of marriage while she herself was guilty of the same. They are NOT what they say they are!!
