Designer John Galliano Reportedly Suspended from Dior After Arrest for Alleged Drunken, Anti-Semitic Assault

Designer John Galliano was arrested in Paris after an alleged drunken, anti-Semitic assault on a couple in the city's Marais district:

Galliano Witnesses called police during the incident, which took place in front of dozens of astonished revellers in a busy covered terrace.

A police source said: 'We arrived extremely quickly and managed to break up the disturbance. The man involved was briefly arrested and then released pending charges for assault.

'Witnesses said he swore heavily, using anti-Jewish insults, before attacking a couple. Both have provided witness statements, as have a number of other people at the bar, including staff.'

The source confirmed that Galliano, who has been chief designer at Christian Dior since 1996, was the only person arrested in connection with the incident.

A police spokesman said Galliano was facing criminal charges and would appear in court at an unnamed date.

Elle UK is reporting that Dior has suspended Galliano:

"According to Reuters the chief executive of Dior, Sidney Toledano, has released a statment saying, 'Dior affirms with the utmost conviction its policy of zero tolerance towards any antisemitic or racist words or behaviour. Pending the results of the inquiry, Christian Dior has suspended John Galliano from his responsibilities.'"

Eyewitness accounts tell a different story than the one reported by the media:

On Thursday night at the posh fashion bar “La Perle” in Paris’ lively “Le Marais” quarter, the Dior head designer might have had a couple of glasses more than he should have. In fact, the designer was pretty drunk but rather in a jolly mood than in an aggressive one. Our witnesses tell us that the couple who sat next to him at the bar didn’t recognized the celebrity designer and started to insult him, mistaking him for a bum when he tried to strike up a conversation with them (Galliano’s personal style could be at fault here).

On his joyful “cheers everybody!” the woman and her boyfriend replied “You’re ugly, you’re disgusting, move away from here!” as our eyewitnesses tell us. Galliano didn’t react to this statement and raised his glass with other bar guests. He then turned around to respond to the lady, saying: “You’re ugly and you’re fucking bag is ugly too.”

The boyfriend of the women then got up from his chair and aggressively charged it to threaten the designer. Galliano’s bodyguard tried to quiet the situation, as did the staff from “La Perle”, but there was nothing more to do; Galliano and the couple exchanged further insults untill the couple called the police while Galliano calmed down and was peacefully smoking his cigarette.

The end of the story, far less dramatic the the press reported, the police just talked to the designer while his bodyguard was on the phone with his lawyer and Galliano conceded to go with them to the police headquarters to give his version of the story, since the couple wanted to press charges. No big police arrest took place. As for the antisemistic statements, Galliano did call the man who threatened him with a chair “Asian”, which is indeed a racist statement.

  2. His designs are beautiful, but he himself has always come across as a creepy sleazy mofo. That hair is godawful. His face looks full of restylane too.

  3. Dior has temporarily relieved him of duties:

  4. That's truly odd...the gays and Jews have always coexisted in The Marais together and in the world. I don't know any gay anti Semites. There must be a lot more to this mess, and I'm sure it will come out.

  5. Um, did I miss the memo? "Asian" is now racist? I know "Oriental" is but "Asian"? Really? So what is the acceptable term for a person from Asia?

Men often get screwed this way. Some asshat woman insults, assaults or otherwise abuses him, he responds and then the woman's boyfriend/husband steps in to "defend her (dis)honor", she walks away and the men fight, ending up with one or both of the men injured, arrested or dead.

  9. @Alain, in certain parts of France he'd be immediately and widely recognized as a wealthy designer, and bodyguards are cheap. And Dior probably paid for the bodyguard, to protect its investment.

  10. Loved the part where he not only insulted the woman but her handbag too.

  11. Completely confused. Calling someone Asian isn't racist, but it's absolutely not anti-semitic, which is what he was charged with in the first version. Since it's extremely unlikely that the plaintiffs were a couple of Asian Jews, I guess it would help as a first step to ascertain if the plaintiffs were Jewish or Asian, then take it from there.

  14. @TampaZeke ... Since when is "oriental" considered a racist term?

  15. Calling someone Asian is not racist, I'm not even sure who said that...Andy? Or?

    Posted by: Eric | Feb 25, 2011 2:20:04 PM

  16. Asian is certainly not racist. Oriental isn't racist either but is very dated and a little weird, especially since it's Western counterpart, Occidental, is not in common parlance.

But perhaps for Galliano the word "Asian" is an insult. It doesn't exactly sound like a classy evening was had by all.

  17. I don't think the couple should have sat next to him if they didn't like his appearance and I think some of the comments here are just as rude. Not everyone owns Abercrombie or other "straight appearing" clothes. ; )

IF YOU CAN DISH IT...YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE IT!!!

  21. As a person of Chinese descent, it is not racist to call someone who is Asian as "Asian". Unless it was "Asian" + insult.

It is more racist to call an Asian whose ethnic background you are unsure of as "Chinese" or any other Asian ethnicity.

  22. Is this story for real? It sounds like a skit gone wrong from SNL...

    Posted by: Fred | Feb 26, 2011 7:28:49 PM

  23. "Asian" isn't racist when a civil discussion is being had, but just bringing up another's race in a heated argument is suspect at best...
