Sheriff: Not Enough Evidence for Hate Crime Charge in NC Arson of Gay Couple's Home

Investigations are ongoing into an arson fire which burned down a gay couple's home in Clayton, North Carolina over the weekend. The gay couple had been subject to anti-gay harassment for over a year.

WRAL reports: Nc_arson

Sheriff Steve Bizzell told the station that as they continue to investigate the case, the status could change if evidence supports it being a hate crime. Other agents have joined the investigation including, the State Bureau of Investigation and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A search warrant obtain by WRAL on Monday indicates that the blaze was set from within the home but does not states exactly how it started. The couple refused media requests for an interview, but neighbors said the men have been harassed on several occasions over the past year.

Bizzell would not comment on the arson investigation but did say his office was aware of two previous reports of harassment. An incident in December, involved a note in the mailbox saying "move sinners" and a second incident was in November involving a homophobic slur left on the back of the house.

Deputies said one was home when the fire broke out between 1:30 a.m. to 3:15 a.m. Friday. One of the neighbors called 911.

Authorities are searching for a Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck that may have been used in the break-in and arson.

  2. I guess I'll join the eventual chorus of "doubting Thomases" and hope the authorities pursue a thorough investigation of this fire to prove whether or not it really was arson with a hate crime twist. Being that it took place in a Repuggie southern state makes it difficult to believe it was not a hate crime, especially with the previous homophobic threats made against the homeowners.

  3. I see how this is going. They are going to try to say the guys burned their own house down to get insurance, and move away.

  4. @ROVEX,

    Ya think?

  5. Time to put that much talked about Federal Hate Crimes Law into practice. The Obama administration likes to make such a big deal about it, pointing to it as one of their signature accomplishments for GLBT Americans.

    Mr. Holder...you're up.

  6. Mr. Holder and the DOJ are only interested in anti-black bias. 'Progressives' in America believe only certain groups can be 'Victims' of 'hate' bias/

  7. Oh, yeah, they're definitely setting the stage to blame the gays for this one.

  9. This post is meant for the non-paid tools, not the professional shills:

It's impossible for you tools to believe a gay couple could burn down their home to collect the insurance? I believe gays are prone to the same human follies as non-gays.

  10. Expected actions from the backwater police force and expected comments from Ratbastard. Yup, the couple, who were not home at the time the blaze started, magically arrived at their house, and lit the building down, although, they weren't home for hours. Right.

Anyway, no surprises here. Just more blame the gays activities from homophobes in homophobic areas, who can get away with it.

  11. From my understanding, there is no evidence linked specifically to the Arson to make it a Hate Crime. For instance no gratiffi was found using derogatory words alluding that the specific Arson ( like burn in Hell Fags") was linked to the Crime. But then again, if you give a prosector enough time and money they can charge a Ham Sandwich for the Crime. Has it been established that this was clearly an Arson?

If after the fact, an arrest is made and the allegdged Arsonist admits to setting the fire because he Hates Gay people, is that evidence to charge them with a Hate Crime? But then again, Gay people are often chosen for victimization because they are perceived as easy Prey. Being second class citizens often allows second class investigations. In many cases, the investigations are equivalent to be victimized again. This goes on everywhere in this Nation, not just in the South. So let's hope that the investigation uncovers the Truth.

  12. Yeeeeeeeah. And perhaps it was a straight man from Uganda who burned down the house because the couple wouldn't pay him for all the sex they'd forced him to do.

  13. @ratbastard,
with zero evidence, with zero implication, youve cast these two as guilty of insurance fraud and false hate crime accusations. bravo, you solved it columbo! next youre going to show us where the wmd's are, and youll reveal elvis and jfk's secret hideout.

while your busy kicking gays while there down, can you burn down a pride center, and maybe graffiti on some aids victims gravestones? i feel your blame the gays first hate would be best utilized if you spread it around some.

  15. BEFORE SOME OF COMMENTER'S RUSH TO JUDGEMENT ABOUT "REDNECK" AND "CONSERVATIVE", THERE IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS COUPLE. PLEASE RESERVE YOUR EMOTIONAL CONDEMNATION AND HATE SPEECH UNTIL ALL THE FACTS ARE IN ON THIS ISSUE. I LIVE IN CLAYTON WITH MY PARTNER OF 10 YEARS. WE OWN A BUSINESS. WE ARE RAISING OUR TWO KIDS HERE. WE'VE NEVER HAD ONE UNCOMFORTABLE OR INAPPROPRIATE ACTION IN THIS COMMUNITY.

FIRST OF ALL, THE REASON THIS SITUATION DOESN'T QUALIFY UNDER THE HATE CRIME STATUE, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THIS FIRE IS A HATE CRIME. FURTHER MORE, THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE CASE THAT HARASSMENT WAS COMMITTED AGAINST THIS COUPLE OVER THE LAST YEAR.

THIS COUPLE, IN MY OPINION, ARE CROOKS, NOT VICTIMS. THEY TRY TO LIVE WELL ABOVE THEIR MEANS. THEY ARE THREE OR FOUR MONTHS BEHIND ON HOUSE PAYMENTS, IF NOT MORE. THEY OWE COUNTLESS PEOPLE MONEY FROM SHADY DEALINGS. THE COUPLE HAS ESTABLISHED A CON REPUTATION IN THIS COMMUNITY. ONE IS A HAIRDRESSER, WHO QUIT OR GOT FIRED FROM HIS JOB A COUPLE MONTHS AGO. THE WOMAN MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE, WHO SPOKEN TO WRAL TV, IS A FRIEND OF THEIR. SHE'S FALLEN VICTIM TO THE COUPLES LIES AND WEB OF DECEIT.

I FIRMLY BELIEVE, IN THE END, AFTER THE SITUATION IS PROPERLY INVESTIGATED, THIS WILL BE A CASE OF INSURANCE FRAUD AND NOT ALLEGED ARSON. SURELY NOT A CASE OF GAY HARASSMENT OR HATE CRIME.

LET'S USE CAUTION BEFORE RUSHING TO JUDGEMENT!
