FOX News Exec Admits Fabricating, Spreading 'Socialist' Obama Lie

Media Matters has uncovered audio of Fox Washington managing editor Bill Sammon telling passengers aboard a chartered right-wing cruise that he willfully spread the Obama "socialism" meme during the 2008 campaign:

Sammon Speaking in 2009 onboard a pricey Mediterranean cruise sponsored by a right-wing college, Fox Washington managing editor Bill Sammon described his attempts the previous year to link Obama to "socialism" as "mischievous speculation." Sammon, who is also a Fox News vice president, acknowledged that "privately" he had believed that the socialism allegation was "rather far-fetched."

"Last year, candidate Barack Obama stood on a sidewalk in Toledo, Ohio, and first let it slip to Joe the Plumber that he wanted to quote, 'spread the wealth around,' " said Sammon. "At that time, I have to admit, that I went on TV on Fox News and publicly engaged in what I guess was some rather mischievous speculation about whether Barack Obama really advocated socialism, a premise that privately I found rather far-fetched."

Indeed, in the weeks leading up to the 2008 election, Sammon used his Fox position to engage in a campaign to tie Obama to "Marxists" and "socialism."

  1. is it stupidity or hubris that sees repubs over-reaching, admitting their lies, etc of late?

  2. This is an appropriate counterbalance to the NPR 'scandal.' Let's see how the media deals with this.

  4. BC the media will do nada because it IS right wing.

Next thing I'm going to hear is that right wingers lie to advance their obsession with wealth!

  5. I doubt this will get any airplay in the media except for MSNBC which will eventually be silenced by Comcast. sad

  6. And still Fox News will get the seat front and center at the President's press conferences. Just because.

  7. Of course Obama isn't a 'socialist' in the sense most people use that word; he's a tool for the Corpocracy, and in this sense he promotes corporate welfare. Almost all major 'leaders' and politicians in the U.S. and elsewhere [including 'socialist' Canada, Europe, UK] are the same. They serve the multinational Corpocracy.

  8. the propaganda machine is alive and well and called Fox "news"

    Posted by: ACe | Mar 29, 2011 3:28:18 PM

  9. @Rowan,

Most mainstream media in the U.S. leans to the left. It's only since the advent of the internet and so-called 'alternative' media, that 'rightwing' social dogma has had a voice.

    But here's the reality:

Fox is allegedly 'right-wing'; it faux rightwing, and Rupert Murdoch has no political or social ideology beyond making money and power. It's convenient for him to use the right in the U.S.. In other places he's supported the left when it suited him.

The same is true also for many allegedly on the so-called 'left'. And of course ALL mainstream media in the U.S. and elsewhere are really controlled by large corporate, institutional, and political interests.

  10. But, and this is critical, WHAT DOES HE THINK OF MADERA WINE?

  11. Of course the Fox News audience WANTS the talking heads to spread lies, want their heroes to break laws (Oliver North, Nixon), and want corruption (de-regulation) --- all so the exclusive few can stay the exclusive few and minorities can be kept in their place --- winning at any cost.

They are not good people - and they promote liars - this will just make them LIKE Fox News more and make this guy more of a hero to them.

That will not stop their attacks on PBS and the TRUTH.

    Why? Because evil is real.

Posted by: too much | Mar 29, 2011 3:50:43 PM

  12. @TOO MUCH,

PBS,NPR, CBC, BBC, etc.,, ALL lie and have serve their masters also, just like Fox.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Mar 29, 2011 4:14:07 PM

  13. ALL mainstream media 'lie' and have agendas. ALL mainstream media are owned by big corporate, institutional and political interests.

MOST so-called 'alternative' media are likewise owned, and shill for big institutional, corporate, political interests.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Mar 29, 2011 4:17:04 PM

  14. This forum/board, like almost all others, is filled with professional shills, useful tools, and trolls. Don't trust ANYONE who only criticizes one side, because the reality ALL major political parties and their party leaders and power brokers are frauds.

And we live in a Fascist-lite Corpocracy; ALL mainstream media are deceitful, agenda driven [mostly to do with $] frauds. The mainstream 'left' are frauds. The mainstream 'right' are frauds. Most people are in between, but they have no real voice, and are caught in a never ending tug of war between extremist ideologies and those true believers and con-men and women who use them.

besides the nutters will only say the truth is just a lie, at which they are so well versed...

  17. @Mike,

What is the 'truth'? Will I get the 'truth' on PBS? No. I'll get their version of the 'truth'. Fox has their version of the 'truth'. They BOTH spew PROPAGANDA, not the 'truth'. And at the end of the day they BOTH serve their corporate, political, and institutional masters. The executives of Fox, MSNBC, PBS, etc., all make excellent money, excellent benefits, run in the same upper middle class social circles, send their kids to the same expensive private schools, etc., They have more in common with each other than with the average American [of average Canadian, Brit, European.]

  18. The facts still remain that Mr President would like to have a socialist European style USA
He has as much said so in SEIU speeches
In his own words, energy prices will skyrocket
The problems with that are that, social programs such as health care and green inefficient energies must have a tax base about double of the current.
UK has it France has it
I left there to get away from that and live in a country where you can start with nothing and make something for yourself. Now the way its going, its like i moved back again. Please, dont lose sight of the fundimentals this country was founded on. Work hard get rewarded. An example; Wendys Dave Thomas
Dint have diddly then made Wendys what it is today. He employed a lot of people, and gave back to the community. To me thats not worthy of attacks on large corps just because they make a product people want

  19. @Mike,

Nice sentiment Mike. I agree in my heart with the sentiment. The reality is FAR MORE complex. And very few people are amused by the massive fraud, bank, corporate bailouts, etc., of the past 2 year financial collapse and depression. I'm not willing to give large corporates, banks, multinational financial services firms the benefit of the doubt anymore than I'm willing to give government the same benefit.

  20. MIKE

    BS

US founding charters for many of the colonies detailed SOCIALIST sharing of 1 iron skillet amongst all colony members etc

the south wouldn't even have electricity if it wasn't for the SOCIALIST Rural electrification program which highly taxed the wealthy north to put in power plants and wiring in the poor south and west

There would be no highway system if eisenhower (REPUB) didn't use that 91% tax on every $ over 1 mill a yr to build the highway system which like all socialist systems are open to the public without toll booths

    etc etc ad infinitum

oh and please sign your socialist SS checks over to me when you retire and please refuse to allow medicare to pay for 1 penny of your future medical bills when your old and retired

    Thanx

  21. PS lets talk about those european countries you claim (I doubt the reality of) to have left behind

All have longer life spans than america

all have high education levels than america

all have better standards of living than america

    etc etc

democratic socialism per looking at the facts is obviously superior to the current american system

Their systems work for the largest segment of their populations where as america currently wishes to do the most for the lowest number of people possible = the top 2%

and you are not 1 of the top 2%

you are in no way 1 of the 400 families that control over 80% of the world's wealth

  22. The financial services industry must be vigorously regulated. Any regulation and laws removed or watered down must be updated if required and re-instituted.

Anti-trust laws and regulations must be vigorously enforced, updated if required, and those laws removed, re-instituted.

Corporate welfare must be drastically reduced and eliminated.

Free trade is a joke and the joke is on the average person. Globalization is a disaster for the average person.

The corrupt, incestuous relationship between politicians, government, lobbyist, and major corporations in the financial services, energy, agriculture, and defense-armaments industry must be confronted and genuinely reformed. Our status-quo Corpocracy must be brought down. Our military-government-corporate complex [industrial really no longer applies; we have little to no heavy industry left] must be confronted and drastically, genuinely reformed and cut back on.

    Excellent points.

But you don't want to unnecessarily over -regulate either. And too complex regulations may benefit middle men like accountants and lawyers but is it beneficial for business and society as a whole?

EVERYTHING you claim here is debatable, exaggeration or simply untrue. None of it is written in stone or universally agreed on.

And 'Democratic Socialism' is in just as dire straits as our so-called capitalism [democratic socialist European states are capitalist BTW]. And the U.S. is socialist. It's a myth to say it doesn't practice extensive socialism.

  25. Mike, dear. . .put down Atlas Shrugged and walk outside your door and take a look at the world around you.

The rugged individualism people seem to think is so quintissentially "American" is in a sense a wonderful thing. Our Declaration of Indepedence enshrines the rights and liberties of the individual human being. Such sentiments had never been articulated so clearly and so beautifully before in human history.
    But. . .
Individualism can never mean that we forget we live in a society. Self sufficiency is great if you are lucky engouh to manage it. . .but eventually, for many people something goes wrong. They lose their job, get sick, use up all their savings to pay the bills and then are left with nothing. Should these people starve? In your ideal society, I'm guessing, they would be left to. I've heard some libertarians say things like "people should move to where the jobs are. If you don't, you starve." Are you serious?

Thousands of people in this "freedom loving" Republic of ours die from preventable and treatable illnesses because insurance companies make more money denying them coverage when they get sick. Obama's pitiful excuse for a "healthcare overhaul" is trying, in its way, to remedy this horrendous injustice. And it is an injustice. Right, wrong. Black, white. No gray. In that sense, I agree with Republicans.

The important word in "social safety net " isn't "social" but "safety". As in , "we wanna make sure the citizens of our Republic don't die when they don’t have to". As in, you shouldn't be left to die of some degenerative disease, or starve, or live on the streets, because you've had bad luck. And that's all it is. Nothing more than bad luck. Queue the whining about lazy welfare queens, of course.
If you think you've "made it all on your own" you haven't. I'm sure you've done most of it yourself, of course. But there was that one contact, that one lucky break, that made it possible. Count yourself lucky every day you live. Some people don’t get that break.
I would say that most Americans work very, very hard. Harder than most people in the world. Many at jobs they loathe and feel enslaved to. Why? Because they are the only thing standing between them and disaster. I'm not just saying this. I know people who are in this situation. That's just no way to live. What the hell is the point of living when you're miserable all the time? Now I see why Evangelical Christianity is so popular in the USA. You get to be happy in the next life. If you don't get overtime today, who cares? You get to frolic in happy Jesus Land when you die. Which, with no health insurance and no access to healthy food (its cheaper to produce crap, you see), won’t be so far away.
Now, if this makes me a raving socialist, well, I guess I am, then. I just think the attitude of “I got mine and if you don’t got yours you must, by default, be a lazy bastard and unworthy of life” is horrifically demeaning not only to the people it is directed towards, but to the person who thinks it. Are we human beings, or beasts?
