Candlelight Vigil Planned Tonight at Baltimore McDonald's Where Transgender Woman was Beaten

A vigil and rally organized by Trans-United, TransMaryland, Baltimore County for Equality, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore is planned at 7 pm this evening at the McDonald's where Chrissy Lee Polis was brutally beaten late last week.

C_polis Said Caroline Temmerand of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland in a statement: "This is precisely the kind of hatred and bigotry that transgender women and men deal with on a daily basis. We as a society have failed if we cannot do more to protect all Marylanders from this kind of brutality."

Added TransMaryland spokeswoman Jenna Fischetti: "Our primary concern is for Ms. Polis’ well being. We will support her through this difficult time and we ask that the legal process be unhampered and thorough."

Polis spoke out about the attack in a video interview with the Baltimore Sun over the weekend.

The vigil and rally will be held at McDonald's, 6315 Kenwood Ave. in Rosedale, Baltimore.

Meanwhile, the 18- and 14-year-old women involved in the attack have been charged:

Teonna Monae Brown of the 2000 block of Kelbourne Road in Rosedale was charged in the attack on Chrissy Lee Polis. The incident was videotaped and went viral online late last week, with hundreds of thousands of views on various websites. The video shows Polis, 22, being kicked and punched in the head by two people until she appears to have a seizure. While one employee and a patron try to intervene, others can be seen standing and watching, and some are laughing.

Brown, who was arrested Friday, has been charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. She remains at the Baltimore County Detention Center on $150,000 bond.

A 14-year-old girl has also been charged in the attack, but her name has not been released because the charges were filed in juvenile court.

  1. I hope the transgender woman recovers totally (physically and emotionally) from the attack. The attackers and the onlookers deserve exactly what their futures are: misery.

Understand this: Gay people are only slightly different from the rest of the society on the issue of race. There are some White Gay folks who are more liberal about being around Black people, and there are others who hold the same views as most White America about Black people.

Any violent interracial incident is just further proof by racist Whites of what is "wrong" about Black people. Forget the historical factors that led up to this current mess in Black communities throughout this country. Ugly history doesn't interest American racists.

If you live in a big US city you are going to deal with inner-city crime usually committed by disadvantaged Black youth. (you hate the word "disadvantaged"? Tough doodoo, then, it's the truth) They are in poverty; they have grown up in drug and crime infested surroundings, they have no hope for life after age thirty....what do you expect? If they AINT scared of death they they sure AINT scared of you! It's going to be that way for a long time.

If you have any ideas about solutions to inner-city crime? Beautiful, please share those ideas. But if all you're going to do is point out with every new news story how awful Black people are...well, then, I hope you get mugged next--you are useless to the problem, and perfect prey as a new victim. Who cares? ( I wanted to used profanity here, but Andy doesn't allow it anymore).

I'm at the point now where I really just laugh and say, Well, you wanna try Hitler's solution? You got 47 million to get rid of. Give it try. But remember, you've got to get rid of the First Lady, Malia & Sasha too. Barack, I guess, will get a pardon, he's only half.

  2. Hey Derrick, that is quite possibly the most racist piece of filth I have ever read on on Towleroad. Stop blaming whitey for black violence.

Your race card was revoked on January 20, 2009. It doesn't work anymore. Sorry.

  3. Great, a trans woman is beaten for being trans, and people want to turn it in to a race issue. Both the racists and anti-racists are culpable in race baiting this one. And when I say anti-racists are culpable, I mean posts like Derrick's because even though it is an anti-racist comment, it was without provocation and will probably generate a racist shitstorm in this comment section where people will forget that a trans woman was attacked for being trans. Which aids in trans erasure.

  4. MAX,

You don't know the definition of racism. You can try to cover up 300 years of history, but you AINT that clever. Enjoy your life in the big city.

  5. I love how Derrick made that comment before ANYONE on here even said anything about race.

He is the most pathetic, racist gay person I have ever encountered.

100 black people could beat to death a white person, chanting "kill whitey" and he would still find some way to defend it and blame white people for it.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Never any responsibility or accountability from him.

What a sad life you must lead.

  6. "I love how Derrick made that comment before ANYONE on here even said anything about race"

Then you must love it enough to know that I couldn't comment on the original discussion on this topic (which took a racial turn) the other day because Andy had to the end the comments.

"100 black people could beat to death a white person, chanting "kill whitey" and he would still find some way to defend it and blame white people for it"

They'd be wrong just like it was wrong when it was done by "whitey" every weekend after Reconstruction through the 1950s.

"What a sad life you must lead"

Maybe? But you must be a happy soul--ignoring the ugly part of your nation's history. Sorta' like Michelle Bachman or Rick Santorum, hunh?

"He is the most pathetic, racist gay person I have ever encountered"

    Meet Max.

  7. Derrick, you need to get laid, man.

  8. @ MAX, C: Stay classy.

Just because DERRICK FROM PHILLY is more thoughtful than you doesn't mean you should attack him. Read his comments again and maybe you can learn something that doesn't come from preconceived, ideological notions.

  9. @David:

This isn't about just this one post; it's about ALL of Derrick's posts over the last few months. They're all so predictable and boring to read. They all come down to these few points:

    *white people are awful
*black people can do no wrong
*black people are not accountable for their actions - history, racism, repression are and will always be the cause of their actions and their actions are justified

His next comment will probably be "Colonialism in Africa caused this girl to commit this crime."

Whatever. I'm out for the day. Peace out to all the sane people. Good luck to the girl who got beat down.

    Posted by: C | Apr 25, 2011 1:41:44 PM

  10. If you really think that about DERRICK's posts, then I think you have a reading comprehension problem.

DERRICK makes salient points about the intersection of poverty, prejudice (which both still exist!) and crime. He does not let anyone off the hook.

To argue that race is irrelevant since the inauguration of Barack Obama is simply distinct from reality.

    Posted by: David R. | Apr 25, 2011 2:10:10 PM

  11. David, I read Derrick's post again. I think he's a racist.

    Derrick writes:

    - "racist Whites"
    - "American racists"
    - "If you live in a big US city you are going to deal with inner-city crime usually committed by disadvantaged Black youth."
    - "Tough doodoo"
    - "they sure AINT scared of you"
    - "I hope you get mugged next"
    - "you are useless to the problem, and perfect prey as a new victim"
    - "I wanted to used profanity here"

    These are "salient points"?

    Posted by: Max | Apr 25, 2011 2:23:48 PM

  12. Quoting out of context neither confirms nor denies salience.

Naming a group of racists as white is not, in and of itself, racist. There are clearly racists of all colors in our society.

The paragraph you elide as "If you live in a big US city...." The whole paragraph is spot on.

And yes, "I hope you get mugged next" is unhelpful.

    Posted by: David R. | Apr 25, 2011 3:13:02 PM

  13. Rather, paragraph AS A WHOLE is spot on.

    Posted by: David R. | Apr 25, 2011 3:14:37 PM

  14. So how many years in jail do the charges carry? Hopefully 15 to 20 years. This was a hate crime, but it also highlights the continued...I don't know what to call it, de-evolution of young people and black youth in particular. I live in a predomniately black area and I am black so I see it all the time. Young kids will start fights for no reason just to video tape it with their cell phones. This also highlights the growing problem with these technologies. Ugh. Its one big complex problem.

    Posted by: Lazlo | Apr 25, 2011 3:45:19 PM

  15. I don't understand why this has immediately turned into a racism discussion. WTF? The girls that did this are trashy no matter what they look like or what their color, and frankly the video was so grainy I could hardly tell. Strangely enough the attack was not even about her being trans, it was some trashy girls looking for a fight. And a bunch of trashy workers and customers standing around watching and laughing. I think instead of launching into a racism diatribe, we need to figure out what is wrong with ANYONE in this country who would sit around and watch this vicious attack without stepping in and doing something.

And Derrick: There are bad things about inner cities and good things. Take one tiny but telling example: the suburban park & ride buses I have taken vs the "BAD, SCARY, INNER CITY" buses I have taken on different commutes. People on suburban buses stare at you out the window running for the bus and waving as it pulls away; on inner city buses the people on there almost always yell out and stop the driver if they see someone running. They have your back, no matter who you are. There is more of a sense of community on inner city buses. The girls in the video are trash, no matter what their race and what their upbringing is. And the people who sat and stared are worse. Apathy is destroying our society as much as trashy girls fighting in McDonald's.

  16. "Your race card was revoked on January 20, 2009. It doesn't work anymore. Sorry."

Max, every comment you have ever made and any comment you make in the future on this site has just been rendered invalid by this absolutely thoughtless, vacuous, unfathomably ignorant comment. You are an absolute idiot if you think you now live in a post-racial America.

    Posted by: Aaron | Apr 25, 2011 5:23:51 PM

  17. Aaron, the self-righteous, holier than thou white guilt doesn't work anymore either. Sorry.

  18. This comment section is so typical.

    Posted by: MickW | Apr 25, 2011 5:49:27 PM

  19. Honestly, Max, the only thing you should be sorry about is the astonishing level of ignorance you so proudly display in your comments. You seem to be one of those individuals who use the relative anonymity of internet forums to spew the ridiculous Fox News-esque type of logic that even Glenn Beck would be too embarrassed to present. Please educate yourself.
    PS: I'm not white.

    Posted by: Aaron | Apr 25, 2011 5:53:27 PM

  20. Aaron, you have not come up with a single rebuttal or counterpoint to anything I've said. Instead, you called me "thoughtless, vacuous, unfathomably ignorant" as well as "an absolute idiot," and then proceeded to rant about Fox News, Glenn Beck, and internet forums.

Your comments are off topic, ad hominem attacks full of indignant freshman rage against any perspectives that differ from your own. Typical liberal.

    Posted by: Max | Apr 25, 2011 6:10:21 PM

  21. First off I wish the best to the victim of the crime.

Secondly, I dislike how this incident has been turned into a racial incident. Hate Crime charges have not been filed, and it doesn't look like they are going to be filed. The term was interjected by a conservative blog called "Drudge Report" when they thought it was a white female being attacked. As soon as they found out it was a transgendered person, the main furor lulled and many apparently racist gays have taken this to a different level. I've read nothing but "animal", and "you people/all of them" comments to put it politely.

Much like the ill-mannered comment about President Obama's election ending "race cards" and what not, during his election the defeat of the CA gay marriage act was also blamed on African-Americans, who are only a single digit percent of CA Voters. They didn't attack the White, Latino, & Asian voters who all overwhelmingly voted to remove the rights, only the Black voters.

You can Youtube 1000's of fight videos online, and few if any are worse or less graphic than this one. And they usually have a giggling, uninvolved peanut gallery of onlookers, gigglers, & cheerleaders.

And they are very racially diverse. I saw a white woman go against 3 Latins over some chicken nuggets. Are white women going to have to suffer the wrath of a racial intolerance for the acts of a few. No. So why should African Americans. Or gays for that matter.

Let the hideous incident be that, and move on with your lives. Damn.

    Posted by: Mina | Apr 25, 2011 6:39:07 PM

  22. Yes, race was a factor in the incident. We all know black folks like to intimidate white people. Some even pride themselves on it. You can deny it, but you are just lying to yourself.

  23. Yes, race was a factor in the incident. We all know black folks like to intimidate white people. Some even pride themselves on it. You can deny it, but you are just lying to yourself.

    Posted by: James | Apr 25, 2011 9:36:34 PM

You know James that is same thing I say when I go into predominately "Caucasian" populated gay bars and get ignored by bartenders and every one else in there.

That is the same way I feel when it comes to Gay republicans who support a racist GOP & Tea Party Nation.

Idiot please. I guess whites have never assaulted a black person, or Black gay person???

    Queen get a grip!
