A gay man living in San Diego is fighting deportation to Uganda, 10News reports:
In a picture obtained by 10News, a smiling Joseph Bokombe stands inside a local gay bar. Bokombe's friends now fear his decision to live as a gay man will be a fatal one.
"It's so painful to me," said friend Awichu Akwanya.
Right now, Bokombe is being held by U.S. immigration officials and is on the verge of being deported. Bokombe, a musician, arrived in the United States five years ago from Uganda on a cultural exchange visa, which expired several years ago. Friends said Bokombe was afraid to go home and was detained more than a year ago.
A change.org petition is gathering signatures in support of Bokombe's request for visa extension and asylum.
