Absolutely reasonable. I tried straight sex when I was young but didn’t dig it. I fooled around with a few straight guys who didn’t pursue same sex attraction any further. I suspect this is very common.

  2. BC says

So homophobic to say this. He is speaking out, saying he doesn’t like gay sex. Isn’t our job as gays to insist that everyone like gay sex? Isn’t that our political platform?

I mean, was there really a point to posting this particular morsel of information?

  4. jakeinlove says

Sorry, but this is far from being phobic. He’s just saying he experimented and it wasn’t for him – no big deal.

In a memoir you’re supposed to tell your life story – and be truthful about it. In this particular situation it appears he’s done that.

  5. says

More people should admit to it outright and de-mystify the whole thing. I had more than a few encounters in boarding school with guys who went on to lead heterosexual lives afterward but it was so hush hush. So I slept with you, and your roommate, and the guy down the hall, and all of you are straight and no one wants to talk about it?

    Maybe they’ll put it in a memoir…

  6. greg says

This guy is a long-time major rock star and he makes a “no big deal” comment about trying sex with another guy but liked women better – no guilt, no nothing, just that he experimented like many many other guys have. For me, as someone who came of age right around Stonewall, the fact that this is no big deal is a really big deal to me as an indicator of how far we’ve come.

  7. plaintom says

The truth from a straight man who is extremely confident about his sexuality. As to Miss Ryan – The bottom of the closet.

  8. dh says

Thanks for sharing, Steven–I guess. His honesty might open minds among some of Steven’s fans.

It would be more earth-shattering if a currently popular rapper/sex symbol came out.

    @JAKEINLOVE–BC was being sarcastic, duh.

  9. anon says

Ryan Seacrest tried having sex with women, but they couldn’t believe he was str8 and laughed too much for him to have a good time.

  10. AnotherG says

Ha, awesome candor. It shouldn’t be/hasn’t been a big deal for rock stars to experiment since David Bowie, right? But still, I love his comfort with that.

I’m glad he digs women, because otherwise we wouldn’t have Liv Tyler to look at, and she is so very, very pretty.

  11. RDUB says

Steven Tyler is certainly a rock icon, and one of my faves. However, like Mick Jagger, he has never passed the 100% hetero smell test in my book. And yes, I mean beyond “experimenting”.

  12. Jerry says

I was recently stunned to find two guys from school whom I’d had sex with who are living straight lives, and a jock who came out of the closet. I guess you never know.

  13. Ryan says

LOL, I was going to just say the same thing, I tried straight sex and “I just didn’t dig it” I mean really is he being serious?

  14. johnny says

Steven, I’ll tell you exactly what my mother told me:

“Aw, hon, you just haven’t been with the right girl, that’s all. Give it another shot, you’ll see.”

  15. Lizzie says

I don’t understand why a few on here seem upset with this. He is acknowledging that he has dabble in sex with men but he found out it wasn’t his thing. So…how can that be bad???? If anything, his position is one of total acceptance. Can someone who is upset with his statement explain to me what about it is upsetting?

  16. Rin says

So, you all needed to have sex with several women before you learned that you only like men?

    I’m really confused.

  17. bobby o says

Knew him and his family back when. He dresses like that to go shopping at the mall. Doesn’t like shopping either. Cool guy.

  18. Shelly says

I remember Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers making a very similar non-chalant remark to that several years ago in an interview. The interviewer came back with something like, “But, did you get anything out of it at all?” he said, “Oh yeah, especially when I came in his mouth.” But at the end of the day just decided he preferred women. I really respected him for that, as I do Steven Tyler for this statement.

As my grandfather always said about food when I was a little kid, “It’s okay if you don’t like it, but at least TRY it first!”

  19. Oh_Surprize says

I hope this isn’t a big shocker to anyone. I wouldn’t doubt AnYtHiNg Steven Tyler has ‘dabbled’ in.

  20. PLAINTOM says

Shelly: but your grandfather also said not to play with your food, adults can give such confusing advise.

  21. ratbastard says

Who is surprised or disturbed by this revelation? It’s practically a non-story.

  22. Andalusian Dog says

Given the brevity of Steven Tyler’s comment, it seems to me that he thinks this is a non-story too. And good for him for his candor, and his brevity. There really is nothing else to say about it: tried it, didn’t like it. What’s wrong with that?

Cool f’ing mo’fo, in my book. Plus Aerosmith is basically awesome.

  23. Randy says

I can understand not being attracted to men, or to women, but I can’t comprehend not liking so-called “gay sex”. What is “gay sex”? Almost everything we do, straight couples also do (not all of them, of course).

Is he saying he can’t enjoy sex with someone he doesn’t find sexually attractive, regardless of their skill?

Or is he saying he doesn’t like being a bottom?

Or does he just prefer vagina to ass?

I guess this shouldn’t confuse me, and I really shouldn’t care about what Steven likes to do, but it’s all his fault for bringing it up, and being unclear.

  24. says

Howard Stern has had a number of female rock groupies on his show over the years. Whenever he’s asked any of them, “Who has the biggest penis in rock ‘n roll?,” the answer is always the same:

    “Steven Tyler.”

    Just some food for thought.

  25. Gregv says

@Randy: I’d assume by “gay sex” he means sex between him and another man. He may very well love being on bottom with a woman or having anal sex with her. His words don’t imply that he tried any particular type of sex with a man (or with a woman.). Of course, there are scores of different “kinds” of sex and positions available to try.
I’ve pretty much said the same thing about women. Positioning of our bodies is irrelevant to me; I just don’t get any charge out of being with (next to, beside, above, below, around) her.

  26. James says

I’m not a fan of his music but I do appreciate his open mindedness and honesty.

  27. Skep says

I see nothing homophobic whatsoever about his statement. In fact, I find the honesty about a straight man experimenting to be positive and de-scandalizing.

  28. Gabe R L says

Of course, there are some men who identify as gay men that not only believe that sex (fornication) between men is wrong, but also say that when they have tried to have sex with men that it does nothing for them. I’ve known a few who told me this. Some of these men believe that love is fine, but contact should be limited to kissing and fondling, or at most sensual massage and ‘frottage.’ Fornication and oral sex are a no-no; it feels strange and inappropriate to them. A lot of these type of men will only do full sexual activities if they sleep with women from time to time or if they are married to one. If not, they don’t do it. Not trying to be offensive, just some more food for thought.

  29. Gabe R L says

And as someone stated earlier there are some men (though probably not many) who did ‘dig’ gay sex but still ended up straight.
