This "goodbye extravaganza" is really offensive in its self-congratulatory tone. I love Oprah too, but this is disgustingly self-indulgent.
I don't know why I'm surprised, though.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Personally I think it's a fitting send off a show that has done so much for so many,

you would think Madonna had written that first part of the speech for herself lol

Go away Madonna you old crusty hag! Lady Gaga is here and she is prettier, more talented, and more popular than you ever were.

This was the only "tribute" in the show's two hours that was entirely self-serving.
Madonna appeared mainly to associate herself with Oprah, and as damage control after squandering millions on her own girls' school. Naturally she had to reference it--and make herself the victim, deflecting blame for the gross negligence--during a tribute that was supposed to be about Oprah's accomplishments, not hers.
Notice she was the only celeb to cite her own charity work - narcissistic personality disorder in full effect. Her narcissism knows no bounds.
For a full rundown of her and her Kabbalah cult's mismanagement, read this Newsweek story:
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-04-03/madonnas-kabbalah-disaster-in-malawi/
...and for her more revealing feelings about the only woman alive she idolizes, check out this:

Like Annie Lennox, Sharon Stone and Angelina Jolie before her, Oprah's just another powerful celeb whose work Madonna tries to imitate and co-opt. All she's missing is a soul of her own.

If there was a Webby awarded for bile & cynicism, it would granted in perpetuity to the commenters at Towleroad.

@Jeff Right. So, twenty years ago Madonna made a snarky remark about Oprah. So? This is supposed to totally negate any friendship she may have had with Oprah for the 20 years since that remark? I get it.. you hate Madonna and arent going to restrict yourself to being rational about it,but it looks pretty petty to me.
Posted by: Steve | May 24, 2011 10:03:50 PM
@Jeff. So, 20 years ago Madonna made a snarky remark about Oprah. So what? Is that somehow supposed to invalidate anything she says today when she has apparently been friends with her for years since then? Its ridiculous... as is most of the rest of your Madonna-directed bile. We get it. You hate Madonna... and apparently being rational is not required. It gets old tho. Im so sick of twisted Madonna haters who seem to only exist so they can tear her down for anything she does. Does she have faults? Sure. Shes human. So what. So does everybody and I just dont think hers are that much more egregious than anyone elses.
@Matthew Couldnt agree more. There are some great people here, but man there are some twisted bitter queens too.

Madonna can never pull in one million sales of an album like Gaga can. She is old, pathetic, and belongs in a nursing home. Time to listen to the new Queen of POP, Lady Gaga.
Posted by: eriv | May 24, 2011 10:56:09 PM
She sounded and looked amazing. There will never be another M. Accept no imitations.
And you're right Eirv... she can't pull in 1 million in sales... she's pulled in over 200 million.
I like Lady Gaga as well, but talk to me when she's sold 200 million plus records. Until then... bow down.
I love that Lady Gaga fans are always attacking Madonna. Fear breeds contempt.

Of course, this was the real reason the rapture was delayed. O would never allow it to preempt her farewell to me show. G had no choice but to acquiesce less he hears about it for all eternity.

I wonder if Gaga would really be impressed with all these "little monsters" who keep bashing her own idol. If you don't like Madonna or her music, fine (and if you like "Born This Way", you can't not like "Espress Yourself", since it's basically the same song, with better lyrics) but your immaturity really shows when you feel the need to bash Madge on EVERY post that's written about her.
And why does everyone harp on her age or looks? Sexist much? Ageist much? Grow up. I never felt the need to slag Barbara Steisand, Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Cher or any other of my previous generations idols... in fact, some of them I actually like.
Why not try to say nice things and keep your negative opinions to yourself... you might even find that people actually LIKE you more. Go figure?

THIS JUST IN: Madonna to adopt Oprah! NO, WAIT....THIS JUST IN: Gayle will reveal she's transgender and she and "Stedman" are the same person [when were YOU in the room when BOTH were, too?].....NO, WAIT...THIS JUST IN: Oprah to sell her urine in designer bottles on QVC.....NO, WAIT....THIS JUST IN: Oprah to use last show to apologize that she was wrong: Obama NOT Messiah, after all.

Can someone explain why Madonna looks like a plastic doll? I know Gaga has stolen her fan base, but she doesn't need to get plastic surgery every hour.
Madonna is over.

I mean some of you queens need some dick in your life...REALLY? Don't criticize the gays but we can talk about whom we choose???.....DAMN HYPOCRITES.
And another thing to you young a$$ folk who are trying to read a woman whom your Monster Mother has immulated and duplicated in MANY WAYS....
Stop calling the older folks old this and old that...You would only HOPE that you reach that age. You won't be young sucking d*ck forever! TWINK A$$ B*TCHES
Tell GaGa stop screaming and open a school for Gays, Tell her donate some coins for AIDS research..MAJOR COINS Then she'll really be doing something!
Until then gagaettes!...JUST DANCE!

"Madonna can never pull in one million sales of an album like Gaga can."
Yeah, she was doing that before Gaga was even born. Literally BEFORE SHE WAS BORN. Oy.

@JEFF,
good god, little girl, get a life!

I love Madonna the stage performer and singer and thought she was interesting during the 80s. She has been an ally to the LGBT community. However, she has evolved into something peculiar - she always tries to sound profound and comes off looking like a phony.
So, of all the women in the world that are alive, Oprah is the only one she admires? Not AIDS pioneer Dr. Mathilde Krim? Not Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo? Sure, Oprah has some incredible accomplishments, but so have many other women. Madonna could have simply said she looks up to her without that qualification, which made it look gratuitous.
There is something creepy about the audience full of cheering, Stepford Wife-like women. Oh, that's why they call them Oprahbots. LOL.
By the way, the Lady Gaga vs Madonna reminds me of debates we had in High School, not that there is anything wrong with that. LOL.

I love how Gaga's little monsters take their time to be bitter and post shady comments about Madonna. Poor souls. I thought Gaga was about peace and acceptance? I guess not. Delusion and bitterness is all my spider sense is picking up.

Hey, people?
You listening?
*This topic has NOTHING TO DO WITH GAGA*
It's a celebration of what Oprah has accomplished, and Madonna is simply there to celebrate.
Stop judging, stop comparing, and please stop all the unnecessary hate. It's not proactive at all, and it's not how Mother Monster would want you guys to act.

When is the last time Madonna had a hit? Was it 1993? Gaga writes her own songs. Madonna hires songwriters. There is a difference. Oh, by the way, lay off the plastic surgery Vadge!
Posted by: StafaniRules | May 25, 2011 10:18:27 AM
@MOO: These Lady Gaga fans are robots. They have no minds of their own. They only spew Gaga praise and hate for anyone else. I don't think they know who Oprah is.
Oprah is amazing. She has given me a lot of great times with my mother, just sitting in front of the television watching the show. Miss my mother.

what is it with these tragic, bitchy little Lady Googoo fans coming on here being total dicks? is that what Lady Gaga is about? having her fans be total assholes? I'll pass on the phenomenon if thats what it takes to be a fan. it's sad to see how angry and spiteful they are.
Posted by: john | May 25, 2011 2:15:41 PM
I love how Madonna never passes up a chance to be a part of "history". Thats why she has done every musical fundraiser ever organized (Live Aid, Live Aid 2, Katrina Aid, this and that Aid!) She truly is a narcassist but you have to love her for it.
