Gay Soldier Awaits Repeal of 'DADT' Next Week, Says 'It Gets Better': VIDEO

In the last video he says he'll make before the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" next week, the faceless YouTube soldier we've been following for the past month says he's been "very, very happy" the past few weeks and attributes it to his slowly coming out to friends, family, and fellow service members.

He also has an "It Gets Better" message for anyone listening who needs it.

  1. Super cool guy. Really nice.

  2. Seems a little strange to be making an it gets better video while you are hiding your face, and a member of an organization that indiscriminately kills civillians.

  3. Hey "Iron Orchard": Please give us all your full name and the city in which you live. A picture link would be good too. The world would like to know who you are, you proud, out, gay person. No need to hide, right?

  4. Getting better is a process, not a single event. The young gentleman is coming out slowly, and things are getting better for him. He's finding acceptance for who he really is, he's less nervous about people learning that he's gay, and by his own words, a huge weight has been lifted off of him.

    I'd call that getting better.

  5. Iron Orchard, you have my pity. What a bitter and ignorant post.

  6. @anonymous texan, I have been living my life out of the closet since I was 16, that would be for the past 30 years, in every aspect of my life. Now if I was going to make a video and post it on the internet, I would certainly show my face, but nice way to distract from the point.
That point being if your going to be telling other people that, especially people who are not yet out, that they have nothing to be ashamed of for being gay, showing your face would be a fresh beginning. Not to mention that he voluntarily joined an organization that discriminated against gays and lesbians, and even after the repeal of DADT will still go on to discriminate against gays and lesbians. With the repeal of DADT he may be able to say that he is gay, but if he should have a partner, they will not be entitled to the same benefits that a heterosexual couple would be, and if he faces discrimination by way of harrassment after the repeal will have absolutely no recourse to make a complaint about the harrassment.

  7. Thanks, "Iron" from Anywhere, USA. Just as expected.

  8. @The Iron Orchard, thank you for calling out others for derailing comments. I, too, find it extremely ironic, considering that, for many soldiers who are both in and returning from combat, things definitely don't just "get better". Especially when you become just a number lining up for benefits that are slowly being chipped away by an increasingly apathetic public.

  9. Good luck to you. I would suggest maintaining a low profile, business-as-usual profile, however. While the end of DADT will of official soon, there are dark forces waiting in the wings to not only bring it back but to make it worse. Hopefully, that won't happen, and again, good luck and thank you for your service.

  10. One of the primary fears of gay kids, for whom the It Gets Better campaign was created, is that if people find out they're gay terrible things will happen, they'll be rejected by their friends and family, etc. Well this guy was just outed by his YouTube videos, he's in the MILITARY, and he has been accepted by friends and co-workers. So who BETTER to tell gay youth (which he still is, BTW) that coming out isn't the end of the world?

It's not the It Gets Perfect campaign.

  11. I'm happy for the guy, and I hope DADT repeal goes through without any more hitches, but it's irresponsible to tell Gay kids whose life circumstances you know nothing about that "it gets better." It doesn't always, believe me. There are still a lot of places in this country, and in this world, where it's not safe to be openly Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transsexual. The fact that this dude is still hiding his face is a case in point.

  12. Iron, what exactly is the difference between showing your face in a video and using an alias on this website? Just as he actively hides his face you actively hide behind your "Iron Orchard" username.

  13. He’s hiding his face because DADT hasn’t been repealed yet so it still isn’t “safe” and he has said in previous videos he wanted to tell his parents first before he shows his face he doesn’t want them to find out in a video on the internet from half way around the world and I respect his decision we all try to come out in our own time and at our own speed as I’m sure I don’t have to tell anyone here it’s not an easy thing to do the” it gets better” videos are aimed at people just like him young and thinking they will never be able to do what he is doing right now to help show them that if they can just hold on long enough to get out of the grasp of their family and community that they see as unaccepting they can do things to make their lives better there not saying it’s easy or that it just happens anyway I think he’s doing a great service to our country by serving and to OUR community by documenting his coming out process in probably the most unaccepting environment possible so I say thank you for your service to both

  14. @RNST_P, I realize that you have homework to do, so in not wanting to keep you too long from your studies I'll keep this brief.
Everyone who knows me, and even the people who work for me know that I am gay, I am not hiding from anyone. I realize that the opinions about me that matter to me are of those I choose to have in my life. I'm sorry that you can not see the difference between living your life for 30 years out of the closet, and choosing a username based on a character from a series of s/f novels. How you then can compare that to making a video where you state that you are NOT super excited about the repeal of DADT, and believe that life right now is great, all the while hiding your face from view I'm not sure what to tell you.

  15. I think he's cute as all hell and i wish him tons of luck and happiness and whoever he ends up with will be a lucky guy. Plus he has big hands which you know what they say correlates to. :)

    Posted by: matt | Sep 15, 2011 5:11:13 PM

  16. @Matt, I thought I was the only one who thought this guy has a magnificent pair of hands. I don't agree that hand size, foot size, etc correlates with penis size, nor do I care about how he is endowed. But I sure would like to be hugged by those hands.

I'll wager he's a very handsome young guy. I also agree that he has the right to come out on his own terms. I hope someday to see what he really looks like, but if I don't, I still have my imagination. I wish him well. He seems pretty grounded for a twenty something. And he's living his life his way which is more than many can say.

  17. One minor point: It appears from his uniform [in other videos] that he's actually in the Air Force.

So, he is a Servicemember, but not technically a Soldier.

Still, he deserves our full support. Thank you.

  18. To the young man in the video - Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It is truly a gift, and I for one treasure it as such. And I thank you for it.

  19. I'm sorry but I can't take this guy seriously as long as he continues to be a headless torso. If it got better for him then he would've been out already.

  20. I love this guy. God bless him.

  21. Well good to see he's using the attention he's been getting for good, but call me bitter or cynical or whatever you want, but he wouldn't be getting half the attention he is if he wasn't obviously hot

    Posted by: Bryan | Sep 16, 2011 4:37:31 PM

  22. @Bryan, unfortunately that is definitely true.

  23. @Iron Orchard,

Our world IS NOT a utopia. It's not Sesame St. Military, police are necessary. There are very 'bad' people in our world who want your 'stuff', and/or wouldn't think twice of hurting or killing you. I don't know where you live, but if it's North America/Western Europe/Australia/N.Z., consider yourself VERY lucky. And I'm glad the U.S., U.K.,France are armed to the teeth with nukes and professional militaries. I sleep well knowing US, UK, French nuke subs constantly patrol, and are ready for war, if necessary, and to deter it. If it wasn't The West with the fire-power it would be someone else. For all our flaws, I still prefer by a wide margin, The West.

  25. We are anxious to know Neil warnock (queen's park rangers manager) how to adapt to such an environment.Perhaps he will be assigned to the garden, and seta fire to candles around the massage pool.Although rich through the chicken processing industry , adb are expected to do,people hope that they can give some Indian cricket Blackburn into the super league of the type of light.
