Can A Porn Star Safely Educate Your Children?

ShockedKidSasha Gray is a retired porn star. She's a lot more than that, too -- she's a PETA activist and author, as well as an actress in what HuffPo refers to as "more mainstream flicks," including an upcoming release starring Rob Lowe. And Ms. Gray is an educator. Last week, she participated in a program called "Read Across America," during which she read to underprivileged 1st and 3rd grade children at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA. From photos obtained by TMZ after the fact, it does not appear that Ms. Gray read excerpts from The Diary of Anais Nin.

Nevertheless, TMZ says parents complained about Ms. Gray's presence, which prompted a school spokesperson to stupidly deny that Ms. Gray had ever been there at all. (To be fair, we don't know how the question was worded. I can imagine some innocent pencil-pusher stammering on the phone: "No! We didn't have any porn stars here! Sasha Gray works with Rob Lowe!") Now, the web is so titilated that even Reuters is publishing stories with headlines like:"Former adult-film actress Sasha Grey is giving her critics a hot, steaming mouthful, after catching flak for participating in a children's reading program last week."

After her appearance sparked faux outrage on the interwebs, Ms. Gray proclaimed:

I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent ... I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am... I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives.

  1. I wouldn't have a problem with it if the internet didn't exist. Her name will be googled and her students will see everything. I just did and the 5th link is a vid of her with a big shlong in her mouth. She chose to work in the adult industry so she should keep on working with adults (like an office lol).

  2. even with the internet i still don't have a problem with this

she's reading books ... not putting on a donkey show

kids are looking at porn on the internet anyway ... if they google her and see one of her vids at least they have a human face to attach to it

if somebody has a problem with this woman participating in this program then maybe they should volunteer themselves to take her place

  3. Good for Sasha Grey!

None of those parents would have had a thing to worry about if they didn't kick up such a stink. Now little boys and girls all over the planet will be trying to find out what a pornographic actress is. Most of these kids had probably ever heard the word pornography before.

Well done, bible thumping xian crazies! You got exactly the result you wanted, complete with ignorant outrage from people not smart enough to know better. You certainly have made progress in your quest to ensure the end of the world... as you know it.

  4. Tonez: Right! And porn stars/former porn starts shouldn't be allowed to have children or look after their family or friends' children because they used to have sex on camera and that's bad for kids to see! You heard it folks: Work in porn. Can't have anything to do with kids ever.

Quite frankly, WHAT kind of parents would be so irresponsible as to allow their 1st grade - 3rd grade kids to google porn or not put a filter for their kids when they web browse? Those parents sound like more menacing dangers with their irresponsibility than a woman who used to do porn, who wants to read a children's book to kids fully clothed and who cares about child literacy.

  5. Someday when the human race has evolved further and realizes that everyone has sex, and that it is nothing to be ashamed of or hidden, these so-called controversies will be rendered moot.

  6. A non-controversy to be sure, but there are always those ready to pounce.

  7. I do not want Sasha Greay being held up as an artist. Far from it. She's an enabler of the sleazy straigt guy fantasy. She took part in movies where women perform homosexual acts with each other for the benefit of straight male perverts. She thus appealed to the type of straight men who generally do not like gay guys, and who rarely vote in favor of GLBT rights at the ballot box.

    Sasha Gray can go away.

  8. I'd trust her before I trust the Catholic Church to educate my child.

  9. Why would parents let children google porn stars on the Internet? *That* is the problem.

  10. To do porn is a very sophisticated way of
being a whore, harlot you name it.
Ms. Gray surrendered her body to be used for prostitution purposes some years ago. Once someone enters into porn this person is blacklisted in some way. There is no turning back to undo your porn life style and try to be the straight person you were before. Sasha Gray does not have any moral license to teach children what is right or wrong.

  11. I would be okay with a porn star, but not with a PETA activist.

  12. Comment, the first: There's nothing quite so precious as a moralizing gay.

Comment, the second: This is yet another Towleroad article given a misleading headline. "Stars" who perform in straight "porn" are not "porn stars." Since its inception, straight porn has been tragically miscategorized.

These are, in fact, horror films.

  13. "Sasha Gray does not have any moral license to teach children what is right or wrong."

Spoken like a true, stone-throwing, American prude. How would you know what her qualifications are, Chris?

  14. I don't know what to think. Little kids seeing anyone doing deep porn does give me serious pause over the otherwise educational suitability of said "star". However, sex does seriously need to be completely demystified in this society and I concur with Phineas@ above. Though they may be stunned, shocked and astounded I don't believe that children are hurt by the explicit (are they, can they be?). Far from the "horror" that Southern Comfort@ asserts (an interesting if puzzling notion which should be under the title Discomfort and seems uniquely extreme) porn, beyond titilation, should probably be labeled comic, though I don't think it would make kids laugh. Ultimately there's no one answer. Each child will have his or her own response heavily influenced by the nearest adults.

  15. Good grief... she's a former porn star not a child molester. I could understand if she were some kind of sex offender who had been ordered to stay away from children but obviously this is not the case.

  16. As a young parent, we'll if possible I try to adjust to the trends but that doesn't mean compromising the values that I'd like my kid to live up, and that would include teaching her that second chances are worthwhile given to every individual. In the first place children wouldn't know who she was if not told by her elders/parents, seen on internet or vid tapes (or whatever storage devices) at the rack of their own homes. I definitely understand the parents' perspective but other adults , I mean those that are surrounding the kids, won't allow her to teach or speak some 'inappropriate' words. It will just do no good if someone will feed those kids of she was.

As for Sasha Gray, she should have expected that this will happen to her, "discriminated" and could live up to that. Anyway I think for her, it's her advocacy and whatever changed her against other people's words.

  17. Would the complaining parents want Jesus reading to their kids? After all, he was a law-breaker, troublemaker, heard voices and had visions, hung around with a bunch of rough men, and was tolerant of "sinners" who gave up their wayward past and moved on to make a new life. And he was a Jew, which is pretty close to being a Muslim in many ways. I mean, that ONE God thing, Abraham, all that stuff...

  18. It doesn't bother me that she was a pornstar. What does bother me is that she is a member of PeTA, and she was allowed near kids. PeTA has officially been listed as a terrorist threat to America. Having one of them teach kids is like having Bin Laden read to them.

  19. It will be true that one of the keys to maintaining a great sex life in a relationship is constantly striving to provide some variety and spice. Even just a few little things can really make a difference.
