NOM, Anti-Gay Groups Ramp Up Efforts to Pass Anti-Gay Amendment in North Carolina

A referendum committee has been formed by a coalition of anti-gay groups in North Carolina in support of a pending anti-gay ballot initiative there to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage, Q Notes reports:

FitzgeraldThe committee, Vote for Marriage NC, was formed last week by a coalition of groups including the N.C. Baptist State Convention, Christian Action League, NC Values Coalition, a coalition of African American pastors and the National Organization for Marriage.

Organizers announced the committee’s formation Thursday.

“We very much look forward to a dialogue with North Carolina voters about the importance of preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman,” Tami Fitzgerald (pictured), executive director of NC Values Coalition, said in a release. “The marriage amendment ensures that voters and not activist judges will decide the definition of marriage in our state. Marriage as the union of one man and one woman has served North Carolina well since before we were a state, and it’s time we respected the institution of marriage enough to protect it in our state constitution.”

  1. I wonder what the rate of divorce is in NC? It drives me crazy to keep hearing the phrase "sanctity of marriage" when straight people end their marriages so often citing "irreconcilable differences."

  2. What she should have said: "We very much look forward to a dialogue with North Carolina voters about the importance of extending marriage to all committed loving couples, The marriage amendment ensures that no one's fundamental civil rights are put to a debate in our state. Gay and lesbian citizens have served North Carolina well since before we were a state, and it’s time we respected them enough to protect their equality in our state constitution.”

  3. These people are so desperate. They're so desperate to use our community as whipping boys for all that's wrong in the world. They are really disgusting, and it's very embarrassing.

  4. "Marriage as the union of one man and one woman has served North Carolina well since before we were a state..."

Does this include North Carolina's anti-miscegenation law that was originally passed in 1715 to make sure that whites could not marry blacks or indians?

Or that fact that regarding spousal rape, until 1993 North Carolina's law stated that "a person may not be prosecuted under this article if the victim is the person's legal spouse at the time of the commission of the alleged rape or sexual offense unless the parties are living separate and apart."

    Just checking.

  5. This is an attempt of the tyranny of the majority over a minority. Thank "God" for the courts.

  6. I love how she said "activist" judges won't be deciding. Oh, so North Carolina doesn't have to listen to SCOTUS? After all, at SOME point in time, they will take that landmark case, whatever it may be, whenever it may be.

I though you were better than your sister state, South Carolina, NC. How disappointing that you are earning your place in the south, when you used to be the voice of reason in the cacophony of chaos that is the southern US.

Please help me complain to the IRS for the North Carolina Baptist State Convention for violating their 501(c)(3) status via political involvement.

  8. Finding that NC is backward is like finding that the Pope is Catholic: I grew up on the NC/SC border, and I can attest that it's as backwards now as it was in the mid-1800's.
