RoadGingrich and Romney want to get rid of bilingual ballots: "Yet their glib demand for English-only ballots would require amending the Voting Rights Act and doing away with hard-won legal requirements that have existed for decades. It's a sharp turn away from the Bush administration, which despite a spotty civil rights record filed more ballot access cases on behalf of non-English speakers than any administration had before."

RoadAre Texas hate crime laws ineffective? "Each year for the past decade, local law enforcement agencies have reported about 200 crimes that police said were motivated by the perpetrator's animosity toward the victim's race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, among other identifiers , according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which collects statewide data. Yet since 2001, when the Texas Legislature adopted its current hate crime statute, prosecutors have earned convictions on 10 cases — less than one a year statewide, according to figures kept by the state Office of Court Administration."

RoadSan Diego's mayoral contest includes three Republicans, two of whom are gay: "Another reason it isn’t an issue is that each of the four major candidates, which also includes Democratic Rep. Bob Filner and Republican state Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, are considered gay-friendly. None of the candidates can lay claim to being the gay community’s preferred choice."

  1. We need more visibility on the small screen and i know Larry Kennar drama is going to be just as successful as the L word. I can't wait to see it.

  2. RE: Fran Drescher: In her case I think that would be less an abduction and more of a repatriation; restoration to her own species.

  3. We surely need the male version of L Word.

  4. I agree with Alex Oarrish. I think Fran Dresher IS an alien. That horrible grating voice of hers cannot be human.

  5. about the NC marriage amendment. The anti-equality marriage amendment is going to be on the primary ballot in May instead of the national election in Nov NOT because the republicans wanted the vote in May but because placing it in May instead of Nov was the only way they could get the needed votes from at least 6 dems in the NC House for passage. The republicans originally wanted t vote to take place in November because their only intent was to use this issue to help being out more far right votes in the fall to vote for the republican presidential nominee. But, they didn't have enough votes in the NC legislature to do this by themselves. They needed 6 dems to vote with them. So, as a compromise to buy the needed dusttwantem votes, they proposed having the vote in May during the primary. You see, none oft hem really care about the marriage amendment at all. the repubs just wanted to keep a promise to their base and had hoped to use it to help the republican in Nov. The dems didn't want the issue on the November ballot because they want to help Obama carry the state. But, they didn't want the republicans to be able to claim they were "FOR" gay marriage. So, the compromise of the May election was born. The dems in the NC State Legislature could have prevented this whole thing. But, 10 of them voted with the republicans in order to avoid being labeled as gay friendly.

  7. A little frightened to see the story about ketamine for depression without a warning on it as to how this could be administered and how that would differ from club use? As an ex recreational drug user who now feels like that use may have contributed to some levels of depression, this rather hopeful, yet also rather dangerous article could get people started on an incorrect self medicating path.

  8. If ketamine cured depression, my boyfriend and I would have been the happiest people in the world in the 1990s. Especially me. I also don't see how being in a K hole once would fix you over the long term. It would scare the hell out of most people. Give someone an opiate and they'll feel better for a while, but it's a palliative solution.

@Tim: the article did say they were being injected (IV).

  9. Oops. I wasn't suggesting the ketamine is an opiate. Just another example.

  10. Tom Cullen is my crush and has been since I saw Weekend. He's just sooo handsome and a wonderful actor. I'm really looking forward to following his career.

That interview with Patrick Wooden is exhausting. The man's an idiot.
