Author of St. Petersburg's Anti-Gay Law Will Attend Madonna Concert, Prosecute If Necessary

The man behind St. Petersburg, Russia's gay "propaganda" bill is threatening Madonna over her plans to speak out against the law when she comes to the city for a concert, ABC News reports.

MilonovThe bill’s author, city assemblyman Vitaly Milanov, says he wants Madonna charged under the new law if she speaks out against it during her concert. He said he was willing to attend the show “to control its moral content.”

“I’m ready to personally suffer a couple of hours of her concert,” he told the Russian Interfax news agency.

LGBT rights activists in Russia are divided on Madonna's proposal:

A group of Russian gay rights advocates plans to picket the concert, saying Madonna is cashing in on their struggle and urging her to cancel the show. “The law will stay in force, Madonna will leave and the Russian LGBT-community will be humiliated even more,” Nikolai Aleksev, the head of the LGBT advocacy group Gay Russia, wrote on his blog.

Other Russian gay rights groups disagreed with that tactic and welcomed the attention the superstar had given to their cause.“We consider that Madonna’s visit and her address to millions of her Russian fans with words in support of freedom of expression for everyone will bring more good than a boycott would,” said Igor Kochetkov, chairman of the Russian LGBT Network.

  3. If Madonna did get arrested, it would draw international attention to a problem that is being ignored. Aleksev couldn't be more wrong. It needs more attention, not less.

  4. I say do the concert. Speak out forcefully against the law. Get arrested. Get jailed. And garner massive world-wide publicity against the Russian homophobia.

Russian politics are dominated by reactionary elements, with the Russian Orthodox Church clearly in the lead whenever LGBT rights are the issue.

It is as if the clock is turned back to pre-1917. All that is missing is the Tsar standing on the public balcony of The Winter Palace.

Sadly, Russia might have rejected Bolshevism in the latter 20th century, but never be deceived that Russia is a democratic, progressive country. It is as reactionary as it was under the Tsar and the Bolsheviks and even worse.

  6. This guy is talking out of his ass. The minute that Madonna decides to do what she says she is going to do, this little martinet will get a call from the Kremlin and he will back his big ass right back down. maybe he doesn't get the PR nightmare this would cause but smarter folks in Moscow do.

  8. She needs to play the concert, condemn the law and donate all profits from the show to Russian human rights charities.

    That way everyone wins.
