Dan Savage Responds to Santorum: 'Rick Can Pray for Me. I'll Gay for Him.'

Earlier this week, Rick Santorum was asked what he would say to Dan Savage if he ever ran into him.

"I would tell him that I'm praying for him. He obviously has some serious issues. You look at someone like that who can say and do the things that he's doing and you just pray for him and hopefully he can find peace."

Shale_santorumSavage has responded in a statement to Mother Jones:

"Rick Santorum thinks that women who have been raped should be compelled—by force of law—to carry the babies of their rapists to term, he thinks birth control should be illegal, he wants to prosecute pornographers, etc., etc., basically the guy wants to be president so that he can micromanage the sex lives of all Americans...and I'm the one with issues? Because I made a dirty joke at his expense eight or nine years ago and it stuck? I'm the one with issues?

"Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

"Rick can pray for me. I'll gay for him. And we can call it even."

  1. I actually agree with Rick Santorum's comments about abortion. I think too many women use abortion as a means of escaping the consequences of their promiscuity. It indicates a total lack of responsiblity.

As for the contraceptive pill, I think it has given women more chances to be deceitful in how they present their sexuality to men. Keep in mind that females are sellers. A seller has to sell by any means necessary. The contraceptive pill has increased the number of opportunities for women to deceive.

  2. Looks like the Bible-thumpers are up early this morning.

  3. Amazing. As a Christian, that is EXACTLY what I would say about Santorum:

"I would tell him that I'm praying for him. He obviously has some serious issues. You look at someone like that who can say and do the things that he's doing and you just pray for him and hopefully he can find peace."

The man clearly has issues. Anyone with that much hate and that much desire to control others, is seriously screwed up.

  4. Interesting how both of these guys have staked out opposite ends of turf, when they're both at their core looking for similar things: a feeling of transcendence and giving and receiving love--and that often begins by kneeling. ("When you call my name, it's like a little prayer, I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there...") Savage dismisses religion and spirituality; Santorum wants to control and regulate sexuality. Huh.

  5. @Jason, the 1950's are over. Deal with it. Spoken like a stereotypical male, gay or straight, who will dump their load in anyone than say "whaaaa" when there are consequences to said load dumping.

Anyway. My favorite sign from the last march on washington was a guy dressed as Jesus holding this sign: I suck cock for Christ

  6. People need to start telling these freaks who/when/how they last had sex since they're so obsessed with people's sex lives.

  7. Give me a break. Rick is a HUGE Nelly wanna-be power bottom who is pissed that even if he came out as gay no man would want to touch him.

  8. Dback, that was an interesting analysis. But when you think about it all societies control and regulate sexuality to some extent. But Savage is being dishonest here. He didn't "make a dirty joke" at someone else's expense. He smeared a man's name on the internet by creating a website, and that website is still here. He didn't write a one-time comment or make a one-time statement 9 years ago that a person would have to search out deliberateley to view.

Savage is a very gifted man with a lot of writing and speaking ability (and a lot of physical charm, if you ask me) but he keeps reverting to a snarky 13 year old. Here's what he should have said:

"I hope Senator Santorum (that's capital S not small S!) spends his time praying for me. It won't change anything about me, but it may keep him out of other anti-gay mischief."

But I can't take credit for this suggestion. It is a paraphrase of what Phyllis Schlafly said years ago when she heard that feminist Betty Friedan was investigating her. Personally, I think Savage would have scored points with this response.

  9. I almost lost it last night watching Senator Frothy Mix stand under a banner that read 'FREEDOM' and talked about getting the government out of people's lives. Do these people have no shame? Do they think the American people are too stupid or too lazy to look at a person's record before voting for...uh wait. Never mind.

  10. Rick and Dan need some time away together.... a nice resort house on the Isle of Crete surrounded by hot gay men, a case of booze and plenty of Axlegrease should do the trick.

  11. and Dan will do it... he is very naughty.

  12. Jason, you seriously need electroshock therapy to get over your hatred and distrust of women that inherently stems from the hatred of perceived femininity in yourself.

  13. What "Jason" needs is an ultrasound.

  14. "Anyway. My favorite sign from the last march on washington was a guy dressed as Jesus holding this sign: I suck cock for Christ"

I hope most Towleroad readers will agree with me that signs like this are really a horrible, horrible idea. If nothing else, think of the LGBT people of the future who will be made to pay for this type of action - even when they were not responsible for it. Now HERE is an true injustice - and one that can be easily prevented. Things are going your way and now is a time for a more loving and grateful attitude. Gay rights in general is still a fairly recent cause in history. Why take unnecessary risks?

  15. I concur David's observation-

    and frothy is just delusional.

  16. Ah, the sweet smell of irrational misogyny in the morning from our resident frothy mix.

  17. Mary: You're insane. "Insulting" imaginary friends is not an "injustice". "Pay for it". You've lost all perspective. Get a life

  20. Jason, does your mother know you think she's a prostitute? Because it's clear that's what you meant by your "women are 'sellers'" comment.

  21. The fight goes on. Will Rick never learn?

  22. "I'll pray for him" is fundie-speak for "I hate his f*cking guts."

If Santorum were Southern he would have said "Well bless his heart!"

    Same thing.

  23. Mary you are 100% right

    societies have controlled sexuality

So, away with you evil jezebel.... per paul in the new testament...."I do not allow women to teach men. They shall remain silent." STONE the witch!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Wow... I guess I need to go by another name since there's an a@@hole using mine.

  25. Jason #1, I wish to Heaven you would become a woman and then get raped so you can carry a bastard child that you did not agree to in your womb. Raise him, pretend to love him and be the mother you did not want to be. Remember, this child was conceived by violence and pain and torture. Not by love, by sharing and not by the will of the Lord. Jason, you really are a slime bag and belong with your buddy, Frothy.
