Simon Cowell Does Not Appreciate Jokes About Him Being Gay

SimonCowell
Simon Cowell got a little touchy after comedian David Walliams jokes that he's gay. The duo were recording a segment on ITV's Jonathan Ross Show to promote Britain's Got Talent when Walliams, co-creator with Matt Lucas of Little Britain, quipped, "The main question I get is, Is Simon gay? Even my mum asks. She says, He's nice. Is he gay?”

Ireland's Independent says Cowell was none too pleased, which probably only further encouraged Walliams:

Cowell looked awkward and attempted to move the conversation on, by discussing how he likes to get up at 12 in the afternoon and go to bed at 5 in the morning, to which Walliams quipped “At 12 o'clock at night you're working quite hard - because that's when the lady boys come round.”

The X Factor boss then replied “It's worth pointing out that I have a relationship with ITV and most of this will be edited out.”

Is this a case of protesting too much or is Cowell just asserting the fact that he's an influential man? I think the latter. As one audience member remarked, "He is not used to being the butt of everyone's jokes." Maybe he should be.

AFTER THE JUMP, a picture of young Cowell worth sharing.

  1. Isn't he rich and powerful enough to take this ribbing in stride? The only reason I can think of for his reaction is that he is in fact a closet case. And I wouldn't have thought that if he just laughed along. Protests too much, indeed!

  2. I can't see why he's worried. I doubt there's a queue forming.

  3. I hope not, he's a DOG!

  4. Well, he certainly is not known for his great sense of humor. Most people who take themselves as seriously as he does don't appreciate being made fun of - even if this shtick of Simon being gay is getting a bit old in the tooth at this point.

  5. Straight guys who are secure with their sexuality don't get offended by such jabs, they brush it off as a joke. To be so defensive like Cowell is being here is a bit telling!

  6. I honestly cannot imagine any man who is not gay being as bitchy, abrasive, and vindictive as Simon Cowell is.....

  7. Who cares!

  8. Simon Cowell - via Max Clifford his press agent - is constantly planting phony stories in the tabs about how studly and heterosexual he is. That includes "stakeouts" by the paps showing women leaving one of his homes, plus photo pieces on him jetskiing around Sandy Lane beach in Barbados, etc. Don't buy any of it. If you ask me, once his mother dies, he will eventually come out, or at least take it a little easier on himself.

  9. Rick, what I cannot imagine is any gay man, no matter how desperate, stooping so low as to find Simon Cowell anything other than repulsive.

  10. Off topic, but I just noticed that #SignsYourSonIsGay is the top trending topic on Twitter right now, and the stereotyped, homophobic slew of tweets that have come with it is disheartening, to say the least.

  11. "Even my mum asks. She says, He's nice. Is he gay?”

I think what we really needs to ask ourselves is: Why is such a question refered to as a "jab" or a "joke?"

I mean, put any other category of descriptor in that sentence in place of "gay" and ask yourself how you would react. If someone said to me "My mum asks, he's nice, is he Jewish?" I would just answer sincerely if I thought the person was asking a sincere question.
But if I thought the person was asking because of some juvenile and prejudiced notion that asking someone you ALREADY know is NOT Jewish whether they are Jewish is somehow a "funny jab" at them, then I would probably change the subject to. And if they added in some stereotyped additional jab after I had already changed the subject, yes, I could imagine asking that it be edited out just because the questioning is not tasteful.
I'm not saying that Simon's motivations are that he sees nothing silly about being gay and so doesn't think it whould be treated as a silly question

But I am saying that if the interviewer thinks that asking someone if he is gay is a hilarious question, then it is he who initiated an insult to gay people here.

  12. I really don't understand how this man has become so important part of pop culture? All those talent shows are money makers and plastic. Yak. A good pop culture is sth different from this man's shows.

  15. Exactly what is his claim to fame? If he were to be a contestant on any one of the shows he's produced he'd be the first one booted off.

  17. I am soooo looking forward to the day when being gay is not something to be "teased" about or to be defensive about...

  18. It's really interesting to compare Cowell's reaction to that of Ewan McGregor, (the clip of his intervuew was featured in Towleroad two weeks ago).

It shows how Ewan McGregor was secure in his sexuality but Cowell is certainly not.
    And he's a tosser.

  19. My next door neighbour in London works in TV and when the topic came up one evening down the pub he told us that everyone in british TV knows he is gay.

On another TV show a couple of nights ago there were loads of jokes about it, it has almost become accepted knowledge.

  22. I hope he's not gay...he's embarrassing to watch and I would much rather he embarrass "them". Talk about a "bitchy queen"...is there anyone else that comes to mind faster?

  23. He may not be gay, but I suspect he's got the world's smallest male member.

  25. It's not about him protesting too much. It's about him not being able to laugh at himself. This was proven perfectly by Chris Sligh on American Idol several years ago:
