What an icky speech. It deserved to be interrupted. “Entitlement” programs are Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment benefits. You know, the programs that take care of us when we are down and out.

  2. Brandon K. Thorpp says

    Rick:

I think the noise makes it pretty clear how the crowd felt. As to the guy taking the picture — well, people do take pictures of things that gross them out, but in this case the photographer is part of the kissers’ party. He, too, is escorted out of the event by security, along with the kissers and one other person.

    – BKT

  3. Smokey says

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what the point of that was other than to appear on YouTube.

What were they intending to do other than to incite the crowd and turn more conservatives against us (since it would only confirm their beliefs about the “disrespectfulness” and “depravity” of queer people)?

  4. PaulR says

America has become a really ugly place.

I didn’t (couldn’t) watch the whole speach, but at the end he attacks “Obamacare” because it might turn out like the National Health Service in the UK. The NHS provides the same outcomes as the US healthcare system for literally half of what healthcare costs in the US. The people in that audience are being taken to the cleaners by the healthcare industry in the US, and all they can do is cheer their own ignorance and stupidity.

  5. says

That was actually quite brave of those guys among a crowd of self-praising and self-satisfied chimps all chanting USA USA USA.

And yeah, I’d really trust my freedom with Frothy……..the fact the he quotes the insane bit*h Margaret Thacher, and that genocidal maniac, Churchill, just confirms he is a closet fascist.

  6. peterparker says

Those guys seemed pretty darn straight to me. NOW…we need to start packing EVERY SINLGE ONE of his odious rallies with gay people and mic checking him and kissing en masse!!!

  7. Mike says

I’m not sure it wasn’t planted to make a point. Does anyone actually know the folks that posted it? The kiss looked rather awkward to me.

Regardless… what the hell does chanting USA, USA, USA have to do with ANYTHING? That is why I think it might be a plant. Let’s them juxtapose a same sex kiss against true “patriotism.”

    What rubbish.

  8. newz4i says

The tone: elite. Soooo … two guys stand up and kiss each other. Kiss-ins should be done more often at Santorum rallies in order to protest “his value” of hate someone in America.

  9. says

Smokey – I’m not sure what point you think you’re making.

you say “turn more conservatives against us”….meaning what, specifically?

that there were conservatives who were “for us” until we, what? “dared to kiss” at a Santorum rally?

that these santorum-fan conservatives were all ready and gung-ho to support LGBT Equality across America, until these two dudes called attention to their homosexualityness by kissing?

is that what you’re saying? because if so that doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

you need to worried not about Evil Gays Who Aren’t Afraid To Kiss In Front of Conservatives, but about the fact that “USA! USA!” is apparently a response to LGBT Equality.

i think MORE kiss-ins like this are needed.

  10. TJ says

I think the chanting and booing was more of a counter-attack to a “Mic check” moment in order to drown out what a protester might say than to necessarily a homophobic response (not that that isn’t possible). Until the guy with the long hair pushed his hair out of the way, it wasn’t that obvious that it was two guys kissing. Line of sight was probably not that clear for most in attendance. And it wasn’t that languorous.

  11. says

    Good point !

What exactly is “USA USA” supposed to mean?

Maybe if it was at an International Football Game, I’d understand.
But who exactly are the rivals here ? A couple expressing affection in public ?

If so, haven’t we come a long way……not.

On another note , shouldn’t we meet the challange ftom the bigots head on ?…..
Get Frothy nominated and let’s see, once and for all, where the Manifest Destiny is taking the Union.

  12. says

I want Santorum to win the nomination because I want these so called “moderate Republicans” and Gay Republicans to look me in the eye and attempt to explain why they’re still gonna vote for him.

  13. Oliver says

People in the USA are fools if they think “socialized” or universal healthcare doesn’t work (in places like the UK, Canada, and elsewhere). We have a national healthcare system in Spain and it’s excellent! I’ve lived here for 12 years now (formerly from the States) and have wanted for nothing. People in the States are being taken to the cleaners with healthcare and insurance. I could write at length on this subject but what’s the point? I have good healthcare. Good luck!

  14. Graphicjack says

USA, USA, USA… What is it supposed to mean? It means homosexuality is, to them, unAmerican… That gay people don’t deserve to live in THEIR Umerica. I hope this goes viral because people need to see the ignorance of the Right before the election. So glad I live in Canada, where even with a right-wing scumbag like Harper as PM, we still live in a truly free country where our rights are protected. It’s not perfect, but American politics, and these Tea Party chimps, are really scary.

  15. Javier says

    Smokey… Please!

Visibility is what moves the cause forward from tolerance to acceptance. It’s totally fine if you want to remain invisible (i.e. – in the closet) but you do not advance the cause of acceptance by doing so, for you or anyone.

It is not disrespectful for 2 men to kiss in a public rally event, for a potential very public figure Sanctorum.

This silencing or supposed “disrespect” is exactly what motivates bigoted homophobes in TN with their “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

They want to silence us, and you would have it so… I would have them re-examine their logic evolve and grow.

The time is now, the movement is alive and LGBT rights for equality will happen hopefully sooner, rather than later.

  16. MIke says

Oh, and the obligatory TelePromptEr joke. These rubes really have it in their heads that the editor of the Harvard Law Review is so stupid he only gets his thoughts from speech writers and media handlers. I mean, of course, how could a black man think for himself?

And the “when my father came to America in 1925, there were no benefits” bit… he’s harkening back to a pre-Roosevelt, Depression-era society. Half these people applaud, no doubt half collecting Social Security and Medicare.

  17. Will says

Santorum sounds more like a Holy Roller preacher than a Presidential candidate. Preacher of the United States. anyone? The kiss wasn’t offensive at all .. what WAS offensive was the mindless screaming and ranting of the crowd. BEWARE of the agenda of “The Christian Dominionists”.

  18. Tom Stoppard says

I want to see more same-sex kissing at these ridiculous rallies.

I think when they were changing USA USA, they were referring to themselves as Utterly Stupid Americans (I’m not anti-America, there are plenty of clever Americans too, just not at Republican rallies).

  19. gustav says

I always get tickled by idiots who start chanting *usa usa usa* when the very things the USA stands for are being squashed and denied. Mindless sheeple.
    Mr. Santorum is a fauxmerican.

I think these guys/girl just got bored and decided to make the event more interesting.

  20. Dastius Krazitauc says

I hope no one who is suicidal watches that dreary clip. Ugh. That´s enough to push them over the edge.

The USA chant is a standard tactic to drown out any Mic-Check protest. I think the next Mic-Check protesters should wear “USA” t-shirts and wave American flags, then it would look like the chanters were supporting them.

  21. James says

Well, what should we expect. A homophobe speaking to a room filled with homophobic right wingers. There could only be one reaction. But the interesting bit, to me, is the chant of USA USA USA. It exemplifies how reality-challenged these people are. They thought they were at an Olympics event.

  22. Tim says

He is a horrible little man and America is being taken to the cleaners by him. Life with him as President will be terrible and the country will not like it! I cant imagine him as President.

  23. jim says

I think the kisser’s refusal to state his sexual orientation is very telling. If he/they were gay, I think they’d have no problem announcing that to the world, considering the stunt.

My gut says these two aren’t gay, and that makes me extremely happy. It says to me that there are straight allies who are willing to publicly stand and do something like this (disruptive or not), in protest of Santorum’s bigotry and the blind allegiance of the halfwits who slurp up every disgusting word that comes out of the man’s mouth. It says to me that there are straight people who have had enough of anti-gay bigotry and propaganda and want to send a blatant message of “ENOUGH.” I congratulate them!

  24. Tim says

I couldn’t possibly be more disrespectful and depraved than Mr. Gingrich or Mr. Santorum. I couldn’t marry that many times (to anyone of any gender), would probably think it just a bit tacky to divorce my seriously ill wife and ask for that divorce while she’s in the hospital. And I don’t even know where to begin with Mr. Santorum, though the meaning of his last name would be a good start. To be serious (not that I wasn’t being, above), I have no interest in meeting the approval and approbation of creeps like Rick (either one), Newt or Mitt, and I prefer to keep my insanity among dizzy queens, rather than Mr. Paul.

  25. Bob says

    LET’S ALL LISTEN TO SMOKEY
And sit with our hands folded, waiting for everyone to be really nice to us and let us arrange their flowers and blow dry their hair.

    NOT!

ACT UP, OR NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

  26. Bob says

The guys were OBVIOUSLY GAY, by the clothes and the actions.
You dont have to have short hair and designer clothes to be queer.
Ain’t ya never been to San Francisco?

  27. SoLeftImRight says

The best part is changing USA USA USA…the most remarkably incoherent nonsense of all time. Look! Over there! Men kissing! USA, USA, USA! Morans!

  28. potlatch says

I am rather hoping nthe two fellows are straight. because then someone will accuse it of being a stunt, and then they can come back with the exact same response they already have given: what stunt? we object to this man’s entire vulgarity about human *affection and love* and we felt a guy/guy kiss was just what the doctor ordered.

More kiss ins! A mere kiss! What can be more sweet?

  29. potlatch says

in fact, hell isn’t that the point? straight couples even. Because I fear, Santorum’s vulgarity is that he would actually be offended at a public man on woman kiss. He is *that* shut down as a soul.

  30. RJ says

I’d like to see Santorum denounce the deluxe government-funded universal healthcare benefits that only members of Congress seem to have access to. Much better than this pale imitation Obamacare.

  31. Rachel says

He says we shouldn’t be forced to buy a product?!!! Are we not forced to by Car insurance, home insurance….he is an idiot. And the crowd… a bunch of bloated airheads who may as well be chanting baaa baaaa…

  32. sciurus says

I’m skeptical that they weren’t paid by the Santorum group to stand there kissing. Don’t Right Wingers often blow up there own buildings to appear victimized?

  33. jack leddy says

How many people do you think their stunt won over to the cause of equality for LGBT people? My guess is Zero! These showboats and the glitter bombers do much more harm than good. But, they feed their egos which is probably the primary purpose.

  34. jack leddy says

Hey Nusstorn: as my grandmother use to say, “Wish in one hand and s**t in the other and see which one gets filled the fastest”. The days of life in the closet are rapidly ending, never to return again.

  35. says

Personally it might be a good idea to focus on real issues that may help people get a leg up in life: issues like social mobility, health care, economic stability, education, and let what one decides to get up to in their downtime be their own issue instead of some politician who is reaching to appease that part of the country that can’t fathom the idea of equality- lest they betray their own masculinity.

  36. says

I suppose my question is this: what are the grown adult LGBT people who are related to the people in this crowd doing?

truly. not the teens. not the youth. the ADULTS.

every single person in this rally is related to an LGBT person. every single person in this rally works with at least ONE lbgt person.

so, what are the grown-adult LGBT people of these communities doing to be Visible and change the hearts and minds of these bigots?

    genuinely curious.
