Josh Hutcherson is Sick of Saying the Words Gay and Lesbian: VIDEO
Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson accepted GLAAD's Vanguard award over the weekend and talked about his two uncles who died of AIDS-related causes. He also talked about his work on behalf of the Straight But Not Narrow campaign, and expressed his weariness of having to use certain words to describe people.
Said Hutcherson:
"I'm so sick of saying the words gay and lesbian. Can we just — people. I'm so tired of that. One day I wnat my son to come home from school and be like, I found this guy and I love him. And I'm gonna be like yes, you do, and that's okay."
Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...
In other news, Hutcherson named his dog after Ryan Gosling.

Wow! Twenty something comments and no accusations that Hutcherson is making Bi, Trans, Questioning, Intersex, and Assexuals disappear. There is hope.

WONDERFUL comment by Other Jim, up above (NOT the one who's buddy's mom is making an obscene amount of money each month doing something mysterious...Andy, SPAM CONTROL, please!!)
StevyD, thank you for your wonderful testimony! All the best to you, brother!
Hutcherson is an inspiration and I hope his fame continues to spread his beautiful message to the world.

I'm gay and proud of it. Proud of the courage I had to overcome a world that told me to not be gay, but I face them daily and say this is who I am...I have no plans to ever introduce my boyfriend as a roomate, or "CONTROL" myself when I want to hold his hands. I hold my boyfriends hands, I appropriately kiss him when it feels right, why? because I value my freedoms in this country and make no apologies for who I am.
THANK YOU Josh Hutcherson for this speech!

It's really no wishful thinking of my part, but in my experience, anyone who doesn't want to be associated to labels simply means that they are not closed to the possibility of falling in love with anyone, be it of their same gender or not.

Thank you Josh Hutcherson for your work and for that speech. If you have sons and daughters, no matter what their sexual orientation, they will be mighty lucky kids to have a dad like you.

I love Josh and it's the silliest thing to notice, but "SHTraight but not narrow"? "SHTruggle in life"? Why do so many young Americans add the "H" to their "ST" words?

Josh is just friggin' AWESOME in every way! Now if only I didn't feel like a dirty ol' 40-something for finding him so damn HOT! In truth, I think his confidence, caring and all his admirable personality traits go a long way to making him even hotter than his (awesome) good looks... Lucky woman that snags this fella one day for a husband!

Of course, people should use the word 'gay' when needed to describe a person who can be romantically attracted to someone of the same sex. However, 'gay and lesbian' is always grammatically incorrect. You would never say 'human and Chinese' or 'dog and Labrador'. A 'lesbian' is a gay woman. So, it is redundant to say 'gay and lesbian'.

I've never commented here before although I'm a longtime reader of the blog, but I just felt compelled to pop in and thank everyone who posted here for a really thoughtful and insightful debate in this comment section. I'd only add that Hutcherson's comments were quick and probably largely unplanned and off-the-cuff, so I forgive him for not giving a detailed and artful dissertation on the proper use of labels in the gay community. At least he's raised the idea, and spurred us to think meaningfully about its benefits and drawbacks. He's probably just trying to do what he thinks is right, and can be forgiven for coming off as naive in his laudable efforts to support the LGBT community.

Part of the labeling dynamic is identifying: both a group "I" belong to and a group "you" belong to. A further dynamic has to do with relative status: "I and my group are better than you and your group." Add in the relative ability of groups to access resources, and the groundwork of competition, prejudice, and bigotry are laid. The fight isn't about sexuality (or race, or gender, or even power), it's about equal access to resources like income, jobs, health care, government recognition and support. The "majority" will always feel threatened, on this front, by the "minority" and they will always seek to suppress the minority as a matter of "self-defense."

I see where he is coming from, and he does have a point. However, being gay is a part of who we are (granted, it is only a part but a part nonetheless). It's not something we should be afraid or ashamed of. Now, that being said, there are also a lot of other things that I would rather be identified as though. Either way, I admire this young man for what he has done. We do indeed need more like minded people in this world.
