Anti-Gay Bishop Harry Jackson Wants to Know if Obama Wants to 'Wipe Biblical Marriage from the Earth': VIDEO
Anti-gay activist and NOM ally Bishop Harry Jackson is leading a coalition of 176 religious people opposed to Obama's endorsement of marriage equality:
“We want to know whether he is going to use the bully pulpit of the presidential office to absolutely erase the image of biblical marriage from the face of the earth...“Voters need to know whether they have a friend or an assent, an enemy to an institution that God has ordained. Some of us have taken his statements as a declaration of political war against the venerable institution of marriage.”
Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

@Derrick The point, as always, is the hypocrisy displayed by men like this. Mark's point, I am sure, was that the Bible was used by white Evangelicals to justify slavery and for a black minister to either be oblivious to that or not see the parallels between what they did and what he is doing--or to see it and be so full of hypocrisy as to not care--is nothing short of incredulous.
I think a better question to "Bishop" Jackson and his ilk, though, to call attention to his and their hypocrisy, would be to ask him exactly what percentage of the people sitting in his church on a given Sunday were born into intact marriages with a father present.
My guess is that that percentage would be somewhere south of 10%.
So if the institution of marriage is so "venerable", why do the vast majority of his flock seem to have so little interest in pursuing it?
That a minister representing a community where more than half the children are born to single mothers and in which 90% of the children will spend either all or most of their childhoods in fatherless households can stand there with a straight face and talk about marriage being "sacred" and "venerable" is just mind-boggling.....as mind-boggling as his attempt to use Scripture as a justification for denying civil rights to a minority group knowing that the same was done to his group for 300 years.

"And most of all, it shows a hatred for not only Black people but also for Black Gays."
Then I guess that means that gays who are Mormons or gays who are Catholics or gays who are white Southerners or gays who are from states in the Heartland.......are also hated and they should all be jumping up and down with the same kind of anger you display because every one of those groups get trashed far more often and with greater severity than blacks generally do when one of their number engages in homophobic behavior.

Yeah, well I just decided to start calling myself Pope Caliban, which has all the legitimacy as this tool calling himself "Bishop" (AKA none), and I say he should go f**k himself.

@DERRICK...you broke your own rule and had to stare right into the heart of hate & bigotry. We're all a product of our conditioning to some degree and it's not always pretty. I was born & raised in Brooklyn...you can bet I've got issues I wrestle with.
You said..."it's a stupid & destructive strategy". End of story Derrick. Old bull sh-t surfaces and we revert back to our less enlightened selves...but we don't stay there long I hope. I think most, if not all of us here are with you...except for that occasional & brief lapse of judgement. Not acceptable for sure! But forgivable under the circumstances don't you think?
I get the "return the hate" thing Derrick. I'm gay white so I've had to deal with less BS in my life than you...but still my share. So, I'm looking to "return the hate" too...but in my case I'm focused on those that really hate me, not so much on those that misplace their hatred on occasion. They're just screwing up in the moment...not as a lifestyle.
Peace & love to you bro.

@Rick...sorry you miss the boat so often my friend. Did you grow up in an alternate universe or just visit a lot?

Yep. It AINT necessary to insult whole races, ethnicities, religions, waistlines, etc. to respond to the Gay-Basher.
"My guess is that that percentage would be somewhere south of 10%."
RICK, reading your comments reminds me of when I stumbled upon a White Supremacist blog a few years ago. Their main purpose was to highlight Black on White crimes. Just White Terror...oh, please. Move to Iceland.
But you know that's why I'm so glad about he rising Latino/Mexican American population of the United States. They will retake what was theirs...and you and your kind won't be able to do a damn thing about it.
What will that mean for Black America? I don't know. We'll just sit back and enjoy the action: Breckinridge VS Rodriguez. What does it matter whether "massa" is White or Latino?
Go Rodriquez!!!!

Jackson sounds a lot like Dub-ya, talking in extremes ("if they're not with us, they're against us," etc), black & white, complete absence of greys. They can't seem to deal with complexities.
I simply can't wrap my head around their fear of marriage equality--it in NO way affects them or their lives or, most probably, their congregants.

"But you know that's why I'm so glad about he rising Latino/Mexican American population of the United States. They will retake what was theirs"
Yeah, just drive around East LA and then drive around Beverly Hills and Bel-Air and see how that theory is panning out. LOL.
Oh, and if you think white Americans are racist, take a little trip south of the border some time and see how you are treated. Or, just read this story, to get a little taste of reality:

As for the 10% figure, if you want documentation, I can certainly provide it....

@Derrick...well, Rick has a way of making me feel naive. Gay racists do exist...even though they may not realize it themselves. Poor fools.
Go Rodriquez!!!

@RICK...everyone here must be too classy to say this...but I'm white trash, so...

Actually, Derrick, here is a better article, written for the Los Angeles Times by a Latina professor at Rutgers (it is re-printed in the first post in the thread):
http://boards.brownpride.com/showthread.php/why-do-mexicans-63071.html?s=8b3977db18006878eb74250aee87be11
A key excerpt:
"The fact is that racism — and anti-black racism in particular — is a pervasive and historically entrenched reality of life in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than 90% of the approximately 10 million enslaved Africans brought to the Americas were taken to Latin America and the Caribbean (by the French, Spanish and British, primarily), whereas only 4.6% were brought to the United States. By 1793, colonial Mexico had a population of 370,000 Africans (and descendants of Africans) — the largest concentration in all of Spanish America.
The legacy of the slave period in Latin America and the Caribbean is similar to that in the United States: Having lighter skin and European features increases the chances of socioeconomic opportunity, while having darker skin and African features severely limits social mobility.
White supremacy is deeply ingrained in Latin America and continues into the present. In Mexico, for instance, citizens of African descent (who are estimated to make up 1% of the population) report that they regularly experience racial harassment at the hands of local and state police, according to recent studies by Antonieta Gimeno, then of Mount Holyoke College, and Sagrario Cruz-Carretero of the University of Veracruz.
Mexican public discourse reflects the hostility toward blackness; consider such common phrases as "getting black" to denote getting angry, and "a supper of blacks" to describe a riotous gathering of people. Similarly, the word "black" is often used to mean "ugly." It is not surprising that Mexicans who have been surveyed indicate a disinclination to marry darker-skinned partners, as reported in a 2001 study by Bobby Vaughn, an anthropology professor at Notre Dame de Namur University."

"@RICK...everyone here must be too classy to say this...but I'm white trash, so...

Nope, I don't think so, Paul B. You aint White Trash. You are a Gay White American who tries to accept other folks--Gay or Straight or Black or White.
RICk is something else. Like RATBASTARD, he is terrified. Maybe they need to talk to that tanning salon woman in New Jersey. With a little help they might be able to pass for Latino or even....BLACK!!!!

If the good bishop jumps off a bridge or tall building he will get to see Jesus a lot quicker.
Posted by: Kevin | May 25, 2012 5:06:51 PM
mark is racist with his slavery snark
rick, while often vile, has a fair point about broken families and misplaced priorites from the preacher
i have no idea what derrick means by "take back what is theirs" and praises some kind of revenge entitlement against whites
what a shitshow. by hey, that's the internet
Posted by: gomez | May 25, 2012 5:09:18 PM
@Derrick...thank you, you're probably right about me most of the time. But, on rare occasion...today...I dig deep into the ugly part of myself so I can respond to someone like Rick in language & on a level he'll understand.
Listen..tanning him would be like tanning Tori Spelling...not gonna happen! Some people are just soooo white they can't even tan...they just BURN to a crisp and act surprised. The rest of us aren't surprised at all.

Both white and black pastors are rich, but the black ones are usually the ones with the bling bling.

@Gomez...missed History 101 dear? It's not too late to freshen up!

While he is editing every bible, maybe history books are next? Slavery? Oh, that happens on Monday nights at the local bar.

@paul b. no. so what's to retake? specifics please
Posted by: gomez | May 25, 2012 5:39:51 PM
ah i read that too fast. latinos/mexicans.
but didn't they take from the native americans?
who missed that bit of history?
Posted by: gomez | May 25, 2012 5:58:53 PM
@gomez...did you miss the memo about this great land originally being the home to people with brown skin before we stole it from them aka "dances with wolves"?
Maybe Hollywood...but not fiction. Or, maybe you just don't believe white people could be so cruel & insensitive. As a white person myself, I've had the privileges afforded whites...but if you ask a person of color I'm sure they would be happy to elaborate on the subject of what the whites did to the native populations and why they might want to "take back what is theirs".
Posted by: Paul B. | May 25, 2012 6:00:47 PM
@gomez...learn how to interpret what you read before you shoot your mouth off.
@Derrick...today is a day that I'm embarrassed to be white. That doesn't happen too often but this crap makes me sick today. Maybe you're right...don't even read it.

Wh.ich part of "civil marriage" do these religious leaders not understand. The marriage debate has never involved forcing faith groups to perform same sex marriage or any other marriage. It is civil marriage, just like when a man and a woman go down to the courthouse and get married by a judge except in future it may be a man and a man or a woman and a woman standing in front of the judge. No clergy involved. No mention of God. No reason for religious leaders to be involved.
Posted by: Swiminbuff | May 25, 2012 6:08:14 PM
Hyperbole Much? Sit down, shut up and leave MY civil, secular, marriage alone. I'll stay out of your church if YOU stay out of MY life.
Get it, Rev? No? Then please move to Iran where you can proffer your religious tedium to people who DON'T have freedom of...and from...religious monsters like you.
Ooh, wait... Iran is a theocratic sand box that YOU can't play in...cause your religion is a heresy to them.
Hmmm.... Maybe Rick Warren can set you up nice and easy in Uganda. I hear he's got connections over there...
