NYT: Jim Parsons is Gay

I could have sworn he was out already (maybe because of a September 2010 National Enquirer story about his engagement to his partner (see screenshot, AFTER THE JUMP...), but some folks are telling me that this casual NYT mention (on page 3 of a profile about his upcoming role in Harvey) is Jim Parsons' official coming out:

2_parsons“The Normal Heart” resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said. As the production was ending last summer, he heard that the Roundabout Theater Company was considering a revival of “Harvey” — initially with John C. Reilly under consideration for Elwood — and last November the play’s director, Scott Ellis, asked him and Ms. Hecht to do a private reading of the work in Los Angeles.

If anybody can point to somewhere he's mentioned it (aside from mentioning his partner's name in a long list at an awards ceremony), please do so in the comments.

  2. Firstly, I love Jim Parsons. Secondly, one would have to be blind, deaf and dumb not know Parsons is gay!

  3. Maybe he was never "in" - if he never denied it and lived his life openly does he have to "come out"???

  4. Didn't he thank/mention his partner during his first Emmy acceptance speech years ago?

  5. Now if only his co-star would come out...

  6. Good for him! Like Mike says, was he ever really "in"? We just assumed he was.

  8. Jim Parsons has ALWAYS taken his boyfriend with him to events.

And once you've done "Broadway Bares"

how on earth can you be in the closet?

  9. Brian in Texas, who are you talking about?

  10. Are people now expected to hold a press conference and officially announce they are gay... for it to be real?

  11. Well, good for him. I know there are people who will say "oh, please, that's been known for a while" or something. But still, I always like it when actors/actresses/entertainers come out. And hopefully, since Jim Parsons is very talented, we'll see another nail slammed into the "coming out will hurt their careers" thing.

  12. He's doing a Matt Bomer! It's a thing. All the kids are doing it these days, didn't you know?

  13. The sad truth is that no matter how openly you live your life, the press will not identify you as gay or lesbian - or even in a same-sex relationship - unless you somehow give the green light for them to do so. It is the biggest double standard left and it totally ticks me off. The media still consider it an insult to call someone gay or lesbian when they have not publicly acknowledged it.

  14. Brian in Texas is referring to Johnny Galecki

So does that mean Matthew Morrison is gay then?

  16. @Kranbree

    I love you for that

  17. This fulfills the mass media's requirement for a celebrity to be "out". All the tabloid pictures in the world don't count because the media can't print that he's gay in a newspaper. Now Parsons is out so now they can print it. It was the same way with NPH and it's why Anderson Cooper is still in the closet. The celebrity has to say the words, or in this case, confirm the fact-check in a legit paper.

  18. Parsons hadn't actually addressed his sexuality prior to this. While he wasn't really in the closet, he wasn't really out of it either. While many see it as a confirmation of assumptions and implied information, it's always nice to see someone dispel myths and uncertainty.

  19. Johnny Galecki has played gay/bi in several roles over the course of his career. He also plays roles, most famously David Healey on Roseanne, who are effette, geeky, non-"masculine," and could be considered--in any definition of the word, queer.

As much as many of us, this poster included, would love Mr. Galecki to come out as gay, I will have just as much respect for him and his career if he does not. If he chooses to come out, cool. If hes straight, cool. Maybe he's one of those insidious [sarcastic] bisexuals, cool. His sexuality matters not.

GO, JIM PARSONS! It is those of us who are brave enough to come out, stand up and be counted, and show America who we are that will continue to turn the tide in this country. Perhaps one fewer LGBT kid will kill him/herself tonight because of this casual coming out.

  21. Johnny Galecki is straight.

  22. First Zachary, then Matt and now Jim.
All three are friends or college friends, right.

Ryan Murphy seems to the current link between them, so I wonder...

So far Matt has taken the biggest risk, since he is the epitome of a leading man, i.e., a "Disney Prince".

  23. This is important because visibility matters, whether we're talking about your niece, your neighborhood postman, or a sitcom star. Everytime someone comes out, the bubble around those who think they don't know any gay people shrinks. There may be people in red states who will think twice about their initial kneejerk anti-gay votes when they read that an actor on their favorite show is gay. There may be kids out there who still think they're alone and that their lives will never get any better, who will have hope because Parsons, a native Texan, seems to have survived his upbringing. Parsons has made a big step with this article and I applaud him for it.

  24. He has been for some time now-- this is not news.

  25. Like every Chuck Lorre property, The Big Bang Theory almost always portrays being gay as a punchline or something the guys always feel they need to deny aggressively at even the slightest provocation. It's sad that the actors on that show can't or won't change Lorre's attitude.
