  1. Well, I hope no one got hurt, but actually, I'm rooting for the polar bear. I think zoos and aquariums are awful. Keeping animals in captivity is cruel.

  2. Take a hint world. Zoo's are disgusting 19 century penitentiaries that a civilized world should shun.

  3. P.S. Zoo's make me cry. I can't stand them. No gay man should.

  4. Um....er....how are being gay and disliking zoos related?

    No gay man should?

    Mary please!

  5. THe commenters are not very up to date on modern zoos - which play a critical function in keeping rare species alive on this planet. Many species would be extinct if it were not for the important roles zoos and their keepers play in keeping the gene pool of species at risk alive and large enough to preserve the species.

Of course it would be better if this were not necessary...but given the world we are in it is vital to keep the endangered species alive and educate the public as the their value to the world and the danger of destroying the environment. Good zoos do this!

  6. Reason number 245,234,587 why wild animals should not be kept in zoos.

  7. Most Zoos have nothing to do with keeping endangered animals alive, don't kid yourself, its about making money first.

If it was about saving endangered species we wouldn't need a Zoo in every major city in the world to accomplish this goal.

  8. Hey PETA, we've got some easily manipulated halfwits in this thread you might want to recruit.

(Most modern zoos, as noted by Alex, are safe, humane and play a critical role in restoring endangered species. There are always exceptions, but a knee-jerk response to this video is silly and counterproductive.)

  9. "It's about making money first"

Until a few years ago, the Houston Zoo, which is accredited, did not charge an admittance fee. They relied on private donors and grants and still do today.

Zoos build an awareness and appreciation of wildlife that you can't get from just reading a book or watching a video.

  10. How absolutely unbelievably amazing it would have been had that glass broke and the polar bear attacked...

  11. Alex, what is the benefit to the individual animals of keeping species alive? I'm quite sure they don't care. All they know is they're confined.

  12. We have our own zoos. They have names like Provincetown, Castro, West Hollywood, etc. and people from all over the country go there to gawk at what's around them. But at least we can move out of these places if we want to.

  14. Progressive Zoological Gardens, with enclosures built as similar to natural habitats THAT HUMANS ARE DESTROYING will most likely be THE ONLY WAY many animal species survive until such time as people don't insist on Palm oil in their cookies and non-dairy creamer, or insist on gas for their cars, hence the drilling in the artic, or demand lots of "convenient" things because they are too busy to make it from scratch. Remember people the REASON animals are in zoos is because HUMANS are destroying their habitat by putting pressure on the habit to grow food (so you can have fresh greens in December) or raise cattle so you can have your cheap burgers. Would it be better if earth did not need zoos? YES OF COURSE. But until such time and YOU and ME and EVERYONE is willing to live FAR MORE SIMPLY, there will be a need for zoos.

  15. If we sometimes get sick of each other, perhaps we annoy animals too. Or maybe the bear thought he was being playful?

  16. @Randy: Stop making us Randys look dumb.

There are any number of reasons why a wild animal might be better off in a zoo or wildlife sanctuary on the individual animal level. Animals that are overly familiar with humans already, either after being rescued or for other reasons, are a danger to themselves when let out into the wild. Some animals have injuries that greatly impact their ability to survive on their own. Any number of other reasons also could apply to any specific animal at any zoo.

That being said, it's not really an important or very interesting question.

The survival of a species is definitely a greater goal than making every animal in that species feel like a delicate snowflake.

  17. Not a very smart bear, had the glass broken completely he'd been killed by the flooding. They need a plastic laminate overlay to protect the glass I guess.

  18. Larry, I was thinking the same! Now THAT'S a video I'd love to see!!!

  19. As both a devoted conservationist and animal rights activist (I know some of you won't believe that, but it is true), I have mixed feelings about zoos.

True, in a perfect world, animals should not be confined against their will in an unnatural habitat.

However, it is also true that many of the animals in zoos were either orphaned in the wild or injured and would not survive for very long if they were left in the wild. Or they were born in captivity and would not know how to function in the wild.

And the fact that the Wildlife Conservation Society, one of the foremost conservation organizations in the world, is part of the same organization as the Bronx Zoo--and uses the zoo to educate the public about conservation, should make it clear to those of you at either extreme of the spectrum here that you are, well, being a little extreme. Zoos do function as a back-up storehouse of genetic diversity for endangered species and that is critical as we reach the crisis stage for species like the tiger.

Now, on the other hand, the animals used in circus acts and other entertainment venues, ARE the victims of abuse and those organizations SHOULD be boycotted and efforts made to shut them down.

  20. it looks like the bear dropped the stone and it accidentally hit the glass. It was not an attack.

Except the bear did it repeatedly.

  24. its our own fault animals are in zoos..we are tearing down their homes and trees and building our buildings and homes on them, either have zoos where they can breed and still live a life or let them become extinct and we'd never see another animal again. When the world understands that its NOT ok to have 5 kids because we are overpopulating the world..the better this world would be.
