Brandon White's Attackers Sentenced To Five Years, Plus Probation

Yesterday, Andy reported on the testimony of Dorian Moragne, one of the three young men accused of beating up 20-year-old gay man Brandon White last February in Atlanta. Moragne insisted that he wasn't in a gang, that he "barely" hit Mr. White, and that he certainly didn't hit Mr. White because he's gay:

BrandonWhite“This ain’t what y’all portraying it to be. This ain’t California. We don’t have a history of beating up gay people. All of this stuff you are putting on the media to say we beat gay people so you can pass a law,” he added.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jackson Bedford didn't buy it. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

"Y'all are the ultimate bullies, and you bullied somebody and you hurt him," Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jackson Bedford told the defendants. "To me there is no question you did it because of his sexual orientation."

With White looking on in the courtroom, the three defendants offered apologies for their actions.

"I am disappointed in myself because I know better and know right from wrong," Dareal Demare Williams said.

The AJC reports that Dorian Moragne, Dareal Williams, and Christopher Cain will perform "intensive" community service upon their release from prison, and undergo sensitivity training.

White's beating was captured on video -- the cameraman, Javaris Bradford, has his own upcoming date with Georgian justice; for the moment he remains at large -- and if you must, you may view that video here. The vid's audio certainly makes it sound as though White was beaten for his sexual orientation. Nevertheless, Mr. Moragne maintains that his cohort, Mr. Cain, was verbally provoked.

  1. I wouldn't want such a harsh punishment for a young person who was truly sorry, but this person shows no remorse at all. He won't even fully acknowledge what he did.

  2. i'm impressed with this verdict. that is exactly how it should be. apologies mean nothing - you are sentenced for the crime you committed. everyone would apologise if they thought it would reduce their sentence. her in england, people get that same sentence for murder, and there is no chance they'd go to prison for this offence over here. disgraceful.

  3. His excuses sound like an old George Carlin routine, "Your Honor, I FORGOT it was a crime."

  4. They'll get out on appeal. Clearly there wasn't anyone around to interpret what they were saying into English......

  5. The secret war the antigay Christians are fighting comes from the secret report that NOM wrote and when it was exposed it said that the antigay Christian hate groups like NOM were getting the blacks and Hispanics to attack and harass the LGBT people and make trouble for them any way they can. This is proof that the antigay Christian hate groups are using blacks and Hispanics to commit crimes against gays. Thank God there are still some Judges smart enough to know the truth. Don't be used black and Hispanic people like the slaves these antigay Christians who hate want you to do because you will be the one who ends up in prison for doing their dirty work.

  6. Why do they talk like that?

"This ain't what y'all be portraying it to be.."

    LEARN TO PROPERLY SPEAK

  7. I can't stand the ghettozation of culture and language. Just reading that quote from that thug made me lose brain cells. Ridiculous that people willingly talk like that.

  8. We weren't raised with money growing up but we taught ourselves how to properly carry ourselves, speak in proper context and not sound uneducated. We as a society need to have a zero tolerance policy for people who speak in slang (especially in the face of a courtroom) I didn't have much growing up either, and neither did my siblings, yet we managed to not sound like toilet trained hood rats.

Huh? My 84 year old Vietnamese grandmother can speak in a more articulate respectful manner, and she's only visited America once. It's amazing to me that people who project a less than respectful mannerism get all bent out of shape when you call them out on being a ghetto mess.

  13. The most outrageous thing about the sentencing phase is that some stupid lgbt leaders, including a State Representative, asked the judge to show leniency to the thugs and to give them probation. Shades of Dharun Ravi. With leaders like that, no wonder judges think gay people don't need or want justice.

  14. Five years? Pathetic. I hate to say it, but sometimes you have to take the law into your own hands. When they're released, it would sure be a shame if a gang beat their asses as hard as they beat Brandon's.

  15. Why do we constantly have to be told to give the benefit of the doubt to trouble makers who abuse out community just because they came from an underpriviliged background? BULL. Our gay kids are dying in thestreets because of political correctness. Guess what? I had it rough growing up to. No money, no parental figures or a good life and I didnt grow up to be a criminal!

  16. @ Jay and TruthHurts

Well said! This notion of feeling empathy for grown adults who willingly and knowingly commit crimes to harm te life of another fellow human, and then defense lawyers playing the victim/race card for the accused attacker IS the reason our society is so incredibly destructive. Excusing criminal behavior with calculating agendas.

  17. I will always stand on the side of harsh outcomes with the legal system. YOU as an adult made the choice to go out in public an commit a crime.

YOU as an adult made the choice to put another human life in jeopordy.

YOU decided to break the law.

Making excuses for criminal offenses is excusing criminal offenses and sending a messge that anyone, with the right back story, can get out of paying the consequences of THEIR OWN actions!

  18. Thugs. Violent, criminal thugs. They help our society in no shape and by their ridiculous quotes, it's obvious they have not learned their lesson at all.

  19. I grew up in the South and spent 10 years in Atlanta, and I know first hand that Blacks do beat up Gays in Atlanta.

    Posted by: darkmoonman | Jul 15, 2012 2:06:48 AM

  20. @DARKMOONMAN

What about the black gays in Atlanta? Do they beat up gays, too?

  21. Some of you commentators sound just as stupid and ignorant as the Gay bashers in this story.
