Cher's Joel Osteen Tweet Causes Gay Firestorm, Drama

CherOsteen1

Here are the facts: singer Cher last night took to Twitter to praise inspirational speaker preacher Joel Osteen. "I love Joel Osteen, he's an example of Christian," she wrote. Osteen is "funny" and "not preachy."

After being reminded that Osteen thinks being gay is a sin, Cher soon tweeted, "He's pretty uncool about the about gays." Thus began a back-and-forth between the singer and her equality-minded fans, culminating in an appropriately dramatic ending: Cher threatening to leave Twitter.

  1. To be accurate, Osteen does not believe "being" gay is a sin, he thinks having any type of sex out of a monogamous heterosexual marriage is a sin and that gay Christians must live celibate lives to obey God. You may not agree, but that is an important distinction. Further, I don't think believing that makes one a bigot or an enemy. I have many friends who believe the same, not out of malice, but because they believe the Bible is the perfect Word of God.

  2. Sometimes I wish celebrities would retain an air of mystery. Reading these misspellings and seeing all the uncapitalized letters just bugs me and brings down my view of these people.

  3. @Paul: Cher is dyslexic, thus her messed-up spelling, etc.

  4. Oh yes Malcom, they have your best interest at heart. Uh huh. They're your friends. No malace at all.

  5. @Malcolm if they believe the bible is the perfect word of god, why do they spend so much time picking and choosing their way through leviticus? Call me when you beat your slaves and stop eating shrimp.

  6. "perfect word of god"? I almost threw up my morning espresso. What a load of crap. Joel Osteen and the rest can take the bible and shove it up his silk bikini brief clad ass while flying around on his private jet. Cher should be embarrassed.

You can believe whatever you want. It's still bigotry.

  8. Osteen is and overpaid gasbag entertainer telling simplistic moral tales in the name of gawd and raking in millions of taxfree dollars

  9. "Christians have a hard time"? In what universe?!

  10. Sam, as you probably already know, Christians don't believe they are under Old Testament Law (Leviticus, Deut, Exodus) but under grace through Jesus Christ. The moral laws reflected in the Old Testament are repeated in the New Testament Scripture, therefore, anything replicated as binding in the New Testament is also binding on believers in Christ today, including teaching on sexual morality. For a Christian, the New Testament Law on sexual behavior is authoritative, so it is not just something from the Old Testament.

  11. Misspellings, uncapitalized words bring down your opinion of people? But not their open devotion to an all-knowing fairy man who lives in the clouds?

    Ok then.

  13. Malcolm, who gives a sh!t what bizarre rationalization they use for their bigotry, it's still bigotry and it's still hate. People choose their morals and must bear responsibility for it.

  14. Leave Cher alone, she has a right to extoll the virtues of someone occasionally without the wrath of the gays coming down on her head. Let Cher be Cher, she meant no harm - and you all know that.

  15. For the record, Osteen refused to hold services for a man that died of complications due to AIDS.

  16. Just to add, there are plenty of Christians who do not think that God or the Bible or what have you requires them to be anti-gay. Those who believe otherwise are choosing to believe in that anti-gay version of Christianity. I don't know why anyone thinks that just because claim their prejudices are "religious" they get a free pass from bearing moral responsibility for them.

  17. So, um, yeah. In case any of you lemmings didn't know, Cher is basically pandering to you all for money. Her career was as dead as her talent until she decided to start churning out that nauseating dance sh*t that you all lapped up like starving kittens at the milk bowl. It's not like she actually CARES about you, but you will all believe she does, because it sells more of her music, doesn't it?

  18. Glenn, you are entitled to that view, but I don't find it reasonable to expect a Christian to eschew or deny the New Testament teachings on sexual behavior. What you are asking is for Christians to cease to be Christians.

  20. I'm not asking Christians to do anything other than accept responsibility for what they choose to believe. Is that so wrong?

    Posted by: Glenn | Jul 3, 2012 10:55:49 AM

  21. @Malcolm - Joel Osteen has said numerous times that he thinks being gay is a sin. Also, you can't say that the Bible is the perfect word of God, and then conveniently claim that you don't have to adhere to the Old Testament laws. The arrogant hypocrisy of that reasoning is just staggering.

  22. You to learn to speak Cher language! She meant Christians have a hard time with accepting gays! Not that Christians have a hard time in general. Cut her some slack - ovously she read his book of all that positivity crap and thought that he sounded nice. WE CAN'T EXPECT CHER TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYONE!

  23. Why do people who can sing (arguably that includes Cher to some people, ugh) think that means they also have a brain. She should just shut her mouth. She's an embalmed moron.

  24. She probably saw the pictures of Osteen's ripped body in the Enquire or was it TMZ? She's the got Joely I'm horny thing going on...you know Cher.
    I love her anyhow...still cool!

  25. Is this for real or just some anti-gay Christian propaganda to screw with our heads?
