Mitt Romney: Marriage Equality, Abortion Are 'Tender' Issues

MittromneytenderMitt Romney tried to keep attention on "outsourcer-in-chief" Obama during his campaign appearances in Colorado today, but an AP report says that members of the audience wanted the GOP candidate to spell out his positions on some social issues.

He wasn't interested:

…One questioner asked why Romney didn't believe in applying principles of personal liberty to areas of private life, like the rights of gays and women; Romney responded by emphasizing that these were "tender" issues, but that he was particularly committed to protecting the life of the unborn.

Whether he likes it or not, Romney's going to have to get more specific, which means he'll likely have to align himself with the increasingly isolated anti-gay forces on the right, something that may not play well with the majority of Americans who support marriage equality.

  1. @Andrew,

Why? I think Catholic dogma is mostly BS. I also think the church should be criminally prosecuted using RICO. I think the Protestants and Baptists are mostly full of sh*t also. I think many Muslims behave in a shamefully backward manner. And yes Andrew, I have serious issues with Jewish dogma also, much of which I would consider to be as racist as the Nazis. And I could list the things that I think are BS, but there's not enough space here. But ooooooooh, I criticized Jewish dogma, so I clearly hate Jews. No Andrew, I don't hate Jewish people simply for being Jewish anymore than I hate Catholics or Protestants.

Tell you what I do disrespect though: double standards. The Jewish religion is as much fair game as any other. But as I said, I find all religions to be superstitious crap designed to control people, and they including Judaism have caused immense suffering, hate, violence, and death in our world over the past 2000 years.

I'm a real radical on this issue,Andrew. I don't give Judaism a pass because of the Nazis. I'm not a Nazi and my family and ancestors didn't persecute Jewish people, in fact they fought to end the Nazi control of Europe. So this antisemitism BS [like the race card] really gets under my skin. Most people are afraid to say what's really on their minds on this issue, they've been brainwashed and cowered into submission. And it's really simply all about control, controlling people.

  5. "tender" is code for, "I don't have the balls to present a solid opinion on these issues because it will cost me votes".

  6. The snake avoids answering questions again.....

Is Romney going to actually make a stand on ANY issues or is his whole campaign going to be about avoiding any commitment to ANYTHING ? What stupid people will vote for an untrustworthy character who won't commit to anything ?

  8. Careful Mitt, you need the votes from born again Christians. (Wait, why do I advice Mitt? Sorry.)

  9. Here's the dirty little secret. Obama is so hated by the right-wing, evangelical, hard-core GOP, that Romney could literally announce on Fox News that he fully supports marriage equality and gay rights, and they would STILL show up and vote for him. The bigots would whine and threaten and fuss, but in the end they would still cast their ballots for him because Romney is the only kind of leadership they recognize: rich, white, and corporate.

So, Romney has very little to lose and a lot to gain by going progressive on GLBT rights. He'd take votes from social moderates who are fiscally conservative. The ideological divide is so strong these days that just calling yourself a Republican or Democrat is enough to get those base voters to go for or against you.

But Romney doesn't do it, even though it's the politically smart thing to do. Why? Because he is just as much a right-wing nutcase as the rest of them. He IS as much a bigot. He IS his constituency of racist, elitist, hateful, backwards fundamentalists. Don't fool yourself for one second that he's secretly "okay" with GLBT rights. That's just your wallet speaking. And honestly, if you're not a multimillionaire like he is, you are also fooling yourself if you think his tax plan is going to help you out. He's in it for his corporate bedfellows, like the Koch brothers. Not you, no matter how many Bentleys you own or how many vacation homes you have.

  10. When I read this, I first thought Romney said he was “particularly committed to protecting the life of the UNICORN.”

Which, come to think of it, is probably pretty damn accurate.

  11. Unfortunately, he is beholden to the Right on issues such as gay rights. Obama is not much different in the sense that he is beholden to the notion of playing politics with our lives.

  12. Well, Romney's campaign hired an openly gay man, Richard Grenell...said appointment lasted all of 24 hours...after Romney caved in completely to the bigotry and homophobia of Bryan Fischer and Tony Perkins.

I don't think Mitt Romney is "gay friendly at a personal level". Not one damn bit. That appointment of Grenell was part of the "pivot" his campaign had to make to the center. And we saw what happened.

Mitt Romney has completely signed on to NOM's agenda. Completely. I think Mitt Romney is a mean, nasty bigot when it comes to LGBT Americans. And we now know that he'll do whatever Bryan Fischer and Tony Perkins tells him to do.

  13. Who knows what this man believes. I don't. He will say or do anything to buy this position for his Mormon masters.

  14. Mitt is "gay friendly" like old plantation owners were "friendly" with their house slaves. Anyone see "The Help"? All those black women, raising their kids and spending most of the day with their families....very "negro friendly" until push came to shove and then they shoved. Hard and without remorse.

Savage had it totally right. House slaves. That's how the GOP sees us.

  15. Oh, poor little tender Mittens. But not so tender that if he gets into office he will not shy from screwing us all.

  16. And yet you seem to be able to be incredibly callous about them altogether, putting forth your insensitive positions without a second thought.
You won't win me, but you'll probably piss off enough Teavangelicals to prevent you from winning, so keep up your little song and dance about how you're "not really a bigot" and piss the uber-bigots off even more.

  17. Republicans will continue to use gay wedge issues until these referendums start losing at the polls. Once that happens they will drop the gay stuff. It's like how silence descended on the issue of divorce after states started enacting no-fault laws in the 60's and divorced politicians started winning elections at the state and national level. Republicans, evangelicals, Catholics and others knew they were on the losing side so went quiet. The last time divorce was prominent in an election was in the 90's in Louisiana.
