Mitt Romney's Gay Politics Booed During NAACP Speech: VIDEO

MittRomneyNAACPMitt Romney popped into the NAACP's national conference today to woo African-American voters. Telling the audience that he has the "best interest" of the entire nation in mind, Romney reportedly told the crowd he will stand for people of "every race, creed and sexual orientation."

Later in the speech, though, Romney contradicted himself, saying, "As president, I will promote strong families and defend traditional marriage." According to the Washington Blade's Michael K. Lavers, Romney's remark was "soundly booed."

Romney was again jeered when he claimed his administration would be better for African-Americans than President Obama, and then yet again when he vowed to repeal "non-essential" services like "Obamacare." You can watch footage of those last two incidents AFTER THE JUMP.

Romney's speech was an attempt to present his campaign as sympathetic to woes facing many black Americans. "If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, then a chronically bad economy would be equally bad for everyone. Instead, it's worse for African Americans in almost every way," he said.

"Americans of every background are asking when this economy will finally recover — and you, in particular, are entitled to an answer."

He also declared, "If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, black families could send their sons and daughters to public schools that truly offer the hope of a better life. Instead, for generations, the African-American community has been waiting and waiting for that promise to be kept."

  1. I just heard reports Mitt Romney received a standing ovation at the end from the NAACP. I can't wait until Joe Hairplugs fills in for his boss and explains to the attendees their 14 percent unemployment rate. As if anybody buys it is that low for them. You tell em Plugs! Bet he jives and dances for the audience Yes Ma'am!!

  2. Booed because he said he plans to repeal Obamacare? Please.
Did you know that Obamacare contains 21 separate taxes most of which have nothing to do whatsoever with healthcare??? I bet you democratic-party-worshipping queens didn't know THAT.

  3. "What was the response of the NAACP to Romney's sworn support of traditional marriage?"

well considering that the NAACP Board voted to endorse marriage equality by a reported tally of 67-2, take a wild guess, asshat.

  4. I think there's also some who have the illusion the NAACP speaks for black people. It doesn't, anymore than a white organization would speak on behave of white people. Don't know about you, but when I hear that a gay 'advocate' speaks for gays, and says stuff I may not agree with, I get irritated.

  5. Give the audience a little credit. They were booing the use of the term "Obamacare" for the act that finally made its way out of congress. It is a right wing catch phrase.

  6. The Washington Blade got it wrong. (And they've corrected their post.) Romney got applause on support for "traditional marriage, Keystone pipeline, charter schools; boos on Obamacare opposition.

If you remember California's Prop 8, the same voters who turned out strongest for Barack Obama also drove a stake through the heart of same-sex marriage.

  7. Andrew: you should really update this story and the headline -- the original Washington Blade article was wrong and has since been updated.

From CNN: "The candidate also reiterated his defense of traditional marriage, earning him more applause from those in the audience."

And from the updated Washington Blade article: "Audience members applauded–and not booed the former Massachusetts governor as the Blade initially reported–this point."

  8. Just like Congress, not one of the idiots in that audience has read the Obamacare bill, so let them boo till they are hoarse. Who cares! I've read the entire bill. It is the biggest joke ever passed by Congress. The reimbursement rates are the same as Medicare and most doctors won't take that now. They won't take this idiotic plan as they are being being for six minutes of their time. What kind of care can you deliver in 6 minutes? I could write an essay but what it the point. All the indigents who think its great, have no idea that they will be on the Medicare rolls and waiting in line for days and weeks for basic services. Most of the states are bankrupt and no governor in their right mind is going to expand their state's Medicare rolls to accept Obamacare. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the states, so the program is dead on arrival.

  10. CORRECTION: Romney was NOT booed for his anti marriage equality remarks but was indeed applauded for them. Please correct the posting here.

  12. Ct's going to take the MediCaid money and increase its rolls. Most states will increase MediCaid and take the money with it.
    Medicare is federal

  13. " is dead on arrival"
Just like the repeal the house is trying for today. Dead in the senate.

Being read we'll have to wait until 2014 to see how many states take the Medicaid money

If the repubs don't get the senate it's not going anywhere.
He got applause but in the end the majority of black and gay people are going to vote for Obama

  14. Johnny, as a pediatrician, those parts of the ACA that will increase MedicAID reimbursement to MedicARE rates are FANTASTIC for us who care for children. Yeah....getting to MediCAID rates is good. Think about that for a bit....

Andrew, isn't there any way of stopping use of a name that's already taken? Ugh...

  20. I bet it irritates the hell out of him he has to go speak before NAACP. But if he didn't, the re-enforced narrative would be "Romney only courts rich, white Americans." Even though he's lost the blacks and Latinos, he has to appear to be making the effort or he'll get creamed.

But don't worry, the Fox spin will be, "NAACP calls Romney their Boo."

  21. HOW STUPID CAN Governor Mitt Romney BE? NAACP HAS ALREADY DECIDED TO SUPPORT THE BIRACIAL PRESIDENT. Governor Romney SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN TO ANOTHER NEGRO GROUP - ONE WHICH OPPOSES "gay" MARRIAGE. IT SEEMS Governor Romney IS A "JOKE" AMONGST REPUBLICANS. [Why does this Kenyan import continue to "catch 'lucky breaks'?"].

  22. Why do I picture Ann Romney ala "Miss Minnie" in "The Color Purple" walk up to some of the ladies at this meeting and say "You wanna come live with me and be my maid"?

Posted by: Astro Boy | Jul 11, 2012 4:44:40 PM

  23. "RATBASTARD,"

YOU ARE ON POINT! NAACP IS A "JOKE" - ESPECIALLY, AMONG YOUNG NEGROES. THE ONSLAUGHT OF NEGRO HOMOSEXUALS "COMING-OUT" AND NAACP's SUPPORT OF "gay" MARRIAGE, HAS DRIVEN NEGROES OF FAITH FURTHER AWAY FROM SUCH FOOLISHNESS.
