Obama to Skip International AIDS Conference, Will Send Video

Aids2012

President Obama will send a video to the 19th International AIDS Conference next week but won't attend in person, the Washington Blade reports:

B_obamaIn a notice issued on Monday, the White House announced that Obama is set to provide a brief video message for the conference, which will take place next week in D.C., as part of “[c]ontinuing his personal engagement on this issue.” Shin Inouye, a White House spokesperson, confirmed this video message will be in lieu of a live appearance at the event.

“The president will not be speaking at the conference,” Inouye said. “He will provide a brief video message to welcome Conference attendees from around the world to Washington.”

The Conference will include a number of high-profile speakers and attendees:

Other high-ranking administration officials are set to attend the event, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius; U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby; Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy Grant Colfax; and Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.

Past presidents will make an appearance at the conference: former President Clinton is slated to speak as well as former President George W. Bush, who set up the fund known as U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and former first lady Laura Bush.

  1. Just watched the Newshour today on PBS; they did a story on gay fundraising for the Presidential campaign and the Obama campaign was not even willing to provide a spokesperson to talk to them about their fundraising efforts in the gay community.

It continues to seem as though they are embarrassed to "claim" us.....

  2. You got it Rick. You think he really cares about gays? There's no money for him in this Aids event. And he wants to "pull back" from the Gay subject. It's all planned. That was done in May. He's hoping that absurd story and cover of "TIME" is not on the voters minds in the voting booth. If DOMA is overturned he's home free. He took a calculated risk - picked up the gay cash --and backed off.

  3. @ Jonathan,

Spring will be the earliest that the Supreme Court will rule on DOMA, perhaps even later in the 2013. I don't think Obama will be "home free" if he is reelected unless he gives in and issues an executive ENDA order for federal contractors. GetEQUAL has been politely sitting it out, but I'm sure they would rev up their engines if Obama doesn't come through with an executive ENDA order in 2013.

  4. I think that it might be that he knows that most gays who vote aren't going to vote for Romney, so why worry? Clearly a large portion of big names in the administration were brought in instead.

  5. Obama can't be everywhere. Clinton is more than an appropriate ambassador for this event.

  6. AIDS is not synonymous with gay, the president has lots to do any can't attend every event, people representing the admin are attending, and he's sending a video. See the reality that is by far the most pro-gay president in history and stop harping on every little thing.

  7. You zombies will cut Obama slack for anything. Even George W. Bush will be there? This is a major insult considering how many gays have died from Aids. Does Obama have pressing golfing plans or some one on one basketball? It's all strategic. And don't count Romney out, there's a world out that that will vote for him, and hates gays. Most will be casting a vote against Obama.

  8. Honestly, who cares? More on Afghanistan. More on transparency. More on drones. More on the economic crisis that is coming and contingency plans. More on Iran. More on corporate interest in foreign policy and domestic politics. When these issues have been debated to death, then I would like to discuss his attendance at an AIDS conference.

  9. AIDS does not equal gay so why are some of you on the offensive? I mean, can't you just be happy for once that some members of his cabinet are attending. He also recorded a message so it's not like his presence will go unnoticed. I mean, just give the dude a break.

  10. This is unacceptable. AIDS 2012 is a huge deal around the world...two former American presidents will address delegates...President Obama spearheaded the first-ever National AIDS Strategy, so to decline an invitation to speak makes no sense at all.

This is shameful; plain and simple.

  11. I am an Obama supporter and will enthusiastically vote for him and all dems in november, but this is not a good move.

  12. Hillary will be there. That's the main thing.

  13. George W Bush has no shame ! What a moron ! He's going to speak at the event after all his awful, disasterous and discriminating laws which he introduced against gay people and people with HIV/AIDS ? What the hell planet is he on !
The convention should refuse him permission to speak - he and his political party are the reason HIV/AIDS has spread so fast in the US.
    DISGRACEFUL !

He is also the person who has blocked access to healthcare for millions of people in the US who have HIV/AIDS.

How DARE he speak at this conference ????!!!

  14. Baseless Obama-bashing will only increase on this site as November approaches. It's sort of amusing to watch the invasion of the trolls. They're wasting their time. Only self-loathers would do anything to jeopardize the re-election of the most gay-friendly president we've had.

  15. I lost twenty to twenty-five friends to AIDS. And it must be an odd coincidence that they were all gay. There was that famous one named Rock Hudson. One was my brother.

You disrespectful asses go down as the worst generation of gays by far. How easily you can be exploited, by some celebrities and The President. How robotic you march together. You have no souls, little identity, less individuality -- which you make up for in self-entitlement and hair trigger anger.

  16. Gary, I have lost over 20 friends (not all gay) and a heterosexual sister to this scourge. Arthur Ashe was straight, and died from AIDS. So, in my head, AIDS and gay don't go hand in hand.

  21. A half million have died of Aids. If you have no idea how many gays were impacted. You should do more research. AIDS was called the gay cancer.
