Washington: GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Against Scouts' Discrimination

0720_LOC_McKenna_t640Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna is an Eagle Scout, a gubernatorial candidate, and a Republican. Yesterday, through a spokesman, he denounced this week's decision from Boy Scouts of America to uphold the institution's ban on gays.

The Scouts' decision followed a "two year review," and included this statement:

Scouting believes that good people can personally disagree on this topic and still work together to achieve the life-changing benefits to youth through Scouting. While not all board members may personally agree with this policy, and may choose a different direction for their own organizations, BSA leadership agrees this is the best policy for the organization.

From GLAAD:

McKenna, who currently serves on the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America, has discussed with some Boy Scout volunteers in the state how "at least locally, the leaders out here could encourage the national organization to reconsider the national policy."

Given his belief that LGBT people should not be discriminated against in the Boy Scouts, it makes us wonder why he opposes Washington's marriage equality law and wants to deny same-sex couples the opportunity to marry.

GLAAD points out that Attorney General McKenna's Democratic opponent former US Rep. Jay Inslee, also opposes the Scouts' ban.

  1. Inslee on the other hand has supported marriage equality for a long time and proudly says so at every opportunity.

  2. Major League Soccer will not renew its sponsorship of Boy Scouts

"... the [Soccer] league has supported anti-discriminatory causes like You Can Play, an organization dedicated to ending homophobia in sports..."

  3. Scouts have had LGBT people in it since it started even if they were in the closet and had to hide the fact that they were gay. America is about equal and civil rights for all it's people not just some. I know because I am an American who knows who is in the scouts. The Boy Scouts need to stop oppressing minorities like they did when they denied African Americas because they were black.

  5. Take it from a Washingtonian, McKenna is no friend to the gay community. The only reason he's taking this position is in the hopes of pulling some moderates away from Inslee, the true friend to LGBT people.

  6. Why is Mr McKenna a republican? How can any fair minded person belong to the present day republican party?

  7. Put a cork in it. You lost. Sometimes gays are like a rash you can't stop. It's not that you really care about access to "The Boy Scouts" it's winning some battle - some perception of great injustice.
If you think about it the really important battles haven't been won.
Has the gay loving President actually put a signature on anything? DOMA is still in place, and you're picking out the colors for he reception.

  8. McKenna is an opportunist slimeball (who looks like a lesbian in those stupid frames).
