EU, USA Condemn Arrest Of Gay Activists By Zimbabwean Police

Andy reported Tuesday on the police attack on and subsequent arrest of 44 gay activists in Harare, Zimbabwe, who were meeting peaceably to discuss past infringements of their rights by police. The activists were members of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe, or GALZ:

“Four police officers attempted to gain entry into the premises before calling for back up where about fifteen (anti) riot squad members descended on the office and effected arrest. Thirty one men and thirteen women members were detained overnight at Harare Central Police Station on 11 August 2012.”

Galz claimed that some of the police officers appeared drunk and assaulted most of the members using baton sticks.

“Police, some of them visibly drunk, assaulted most of the members using baton sticks, open hands and clenched fists before detaining them without charge. Such use of force is in direct contradiction to the Global Political Agreement,” Galz said.

Now, Zimeye reports that both the American embassy and the diplomatic delegation from the European Union have condemned the assault:

Robert-Mugabe-007“The targeting and abusive treatment of non-governmental groups by members of the police is deeply disturbing part of life in Zimbabwe,” the US Embassy in Harare said.

“Too often, the Zimbabwe Republic Police becomes an instrument of political violence for use against citizens exercising their democratic rights, rather than maintaining its proper role of the people’s protector and guardian of law and order.”

The EU welcomes President Mugabe and Prime Minister Tsvangirai’s recent public calls for peace and for people to avoid resorting to violence. We encourage all Zimbabweans to join these unambiguous calls against violence and violations of human rights.

Zimbabwean president-for-life Robert Mugabe has famously declared that gays and lesbians are "worse than dogs and pigs." He's also insisted that homosexuality violates womens' rights and leads to the eventual extinction of the species, and he once jailed a fellow politician for suggesting he, Mugabe, might be gay.

  1. This man is clearly out of his mind and must be stopped. I hope those activists in Zimbabwe are not fatally injured.

  2. A lot of underdeveloped African nations are ruled by politicians who are underdeveloped humans. Mugabe, with his hitlerlike mustache, is one of them. Soon, Mugabe will be dead. I hope Zimbabweans will not elect another Mugabe. I hope, Africans will one day find a way out of that misery.

  4. I was not aware that Mugabe was ever in a state of non-condemnation given all his earlier awful political practices. I worked with a woman very newly from zimbabwe in 2006 and remember her mom coming over to visit for about a month around the birth of her child and ended up staying 6 months because there was a lot of civil unrest, people being taken from their homes in the middle of the night and disappearing forever, that kind of stuff.

  7. It's the same all over the world; the worse the educational system and/or poverty and the higher the religious extremism (not anti-religion, just extremism), the more homophobia/general bigotry. The schools are terrible, and are what is destroying at least my small town. Because the schools are bad (Some reach high school and can barely read), the workforce is poor and uneducated. Because of that, employers with skilled jobs will avoid the area, leaving only low paying, no benefits manual labor. People work at the damn seat factory and make 8$ an hour while destroying their bodies. No benefits, either. Because the people are poor, the schools don't get much property tax, making them worse, increasing crime which makes the wealthy look elsewhere for real estate. Look at some better statistics, school budgets are like lawyer salaries: Either horrible or huge, without much in the middle. Whether you blame school budgets, unions, or whatever, it cannot be denied that poor education is killing rural America, and turning parts of Africa into hellholes for gays.
