Even More Eagle Scouts Return Badges To Protest Gay Discrimination
"It is not an easy thing to give up your Eagle. It sounds silly, but it’s very emotional, you know, if you’ve been in Scouts as long as most of us guys have," Bill DeVos, a former Eagle Scout master from New York State, said in a recent interview.
Like many other Scouts, DeVos decided to return his badges after the Boy Scouts of America announced last month that it's standing by its discriminatory rule banning openly gay members and leaders.
NBC News offers new details:
[DeVos] joined dozens of other Eagle Scouts who said in online postings that they have sent back their medals, badges or certificates... DeVos was hoping to remain part of the Scouts organization and push for change from within, but others who returned medals said they were done with the organization.
A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America, Deron Smith, said 50,000 Scouts earn the Eagle rank every year, and that a “few” had returned their medals, badges or certificates since July 17. When asked for a precise number, Smith said it would be hard to say since there was no standard way to return the items.
"While a majority of our membership agrees with our policy, we fully understand no single policy will accommodate the many diverse views among our membership or society," Smith said in an email. "Naturally, we’re disappointed when someone decides to return a medal, but we respect their right to express an opinion in whatever manner they feel is appropriate."
Perhaps it's high time someone start a new organization to rival the Boy Scouts?

The alternative exists, just not in a lot of places. It's called Navigators http://navigatorsusa.ning.com/ As a former Boy Scout who left the organization as a Life Scout before reaching Eagle because of this issue, I would love to see a more accepting alternative like Navigators become more widespread.

4-H is also a great alternative. As a bonus, it does not discriminate based on gender as well.

It is good to see these real Eagle Scouts following the Boy Scout Oath, God made all men equal not just some. We know it is a few antigay Christians with mental problems who are stirring up other Christians to hate. Thank God these real Eagle Scouts know the truth and the difference between good and evil and that is why they refuse to be part of a group that promotes hate. God commanded us to love not hate one another.

BSA, without a doubt, are tracking the number of returned medals, badges, and certificates.

Mike, you have no idea what you at talking about. The scout oath says nothing about god making all men equal. I'm not taking the BSAs side, of course, just pointing out your ignorance. And, what's with your real eagle scout comment? Like opposed to the fake eagle scouts? You're a moron.
Go thump your bible somewhere else!

There already is an alternative scouting organization called Navigators, USA:

Ugh I had an ugly thought that the eagle scouts might just shrug this off and re award those returned medals to new eagle scouts yuck

@mike
Isn't slavery in your bible? Is that what you mean by god made all men equal? I just love the never ending picking and choosing.

Wow, Cailean...do you make yourself feel better and superior by pointing out someone's alleged ignorance and calling them a moron? Totally uncalled for, but if it makes you feel better, please direct your snide comments to me as I know exactly what value to put on them...
Mike: I'm not religious at all, but agree with your comment.

Stpetegreg,
That's right, let's not let facts get in our way, we wouldn't want that.
Posted by: Cailean | Aug 2, 2012 12:17:39 PM
The ban is on "openly gay scouts and leaders!" Why mess up a good thing like child molestation and abuse...sounds like Penn State. If they were open, then the Leaders would no longer feel like men rewarded for conquering the flesh of the innocent. It's all about control, but they have issues like the Catholic Church and other institutions who would rather have choice and indulge in pleasures of the youth under coercion. Scouts honor!

One more thing, Stpetegreg
I guess you missed the point where Mike insulted all eagle scouts by suggesting that some are not real eagle scouts? But apparently that part was ok with you, huh?
Posted by: Cailean | Aug 2, 2012 12:23:56 PM
Cailean...I guess you missed the point that you don't have to insult people to get your point across and unless you are an Eagle Scout as I am (your distasteful discourse would indicate you are not), we don't need you to protect our feelings. Most of us are very secure in our skin and don't need to resort to rudeness, something we were taught in the scouting program.

stpetegreg,
I guess you missed the point that you shouldn't assume I'm not an Eagle Scout, which I am so you can stop with the "our" nonsense! I spent MANY years in scouting and worked very hard for my Eagle. Do you think someone who is not an Eagle Scout would get offended by someone asserting that there are "real" Eagle Scouts vs. non-real Eagle Scouts! That's the statement that started off the insults. When did you return your badge?
Posted by: Cailean | Aug 2, 2012 2:03:18 PM
The so-called "Leaders" of the Scout movement have made this mess themselves. They deserve the whole organisation to collapse around them.
I thank the men who are returning their Eagle Scout badges. They have worked hard for many years for those badges so I can appreciate it's a hard thing to surrender it.
These are great people who are supporting us in a big way !
I think the more Eagle Scouts who return the badges, the more likely the policy (and the so-called "Leaders") will change.

My understanding of the scouting programs in Europe is that there isn't as much gender segregation (may be wrong, please educate me if I am), iow, scouting isn't always broken up into Boy/Girl Scouts, and that the groups in Europe are more inclusive as a whole, without some of the blatant christian overtones found in the BSA program. As I said, I may be wrong though.
Would associating a troop in the US with a European group (assuming my assumptions re: inclusiveness) be a viable option? Ala the splintering of the Episcopal church in the US into inclusive groups and those groups looking to African bishoprics now?

What's next? Beauty queens returning their crowns? You are really a bunch of pathetic sissies. What will happen when you try to take on a greater power than The Boy Scouts? Iran is threatening the middle east and you're mailing back your badges. Better have the right postage. The Post Office is crumbling as well.

Good for them. There isn't enough action we can take to COMBAT homophobia. This is all courageous and makes a statement that we wont stand for bigotry

Returning the badge only furthers their policy of excluding gays! It's what they want. I am an gay Eagle Scout and this ignorant policy does not lessen my accomplishment. Returning badges will make the haters happy and discourage the supporters within the organization. I'm keeping mine.

You can fight all you like. You saw some of your "enemy" today at the chicken spot. All your comments will not phase them. They vote. Their numbers could vote you out. They hate gays. Imagine the harassment married couples will face. It's like the Barbarians that destroyed Rome, leading to The Middle Ages. You don't see and deal with these people everyday, but they are out there in the thousands. Reality check... Life is not a gay blog.

Until 1974, some boy scout troops were still racially segregated in the American south.

My daughter has been an Australian Scout for 5 years, has achieved her Australian Scout Medallion and is currently working towards her Queens Scout Award (Similar to Eagle).
In Australia there is no discrimination based upon gender, religion (or lack there of), sexual orientation, race... nothing. In Australian Scouts none of these things matter... and if they did it would be AGAINST SCOUT LAW. Scouts is about learning, having fun and teaching children to be the best person they can be...
Why have the U.S. Scouts not caught up with this philosophy? It makes me sad.
Posted by: Karla | Aug 5, 2012 2:01:51 AM
P.S. Just wanted to add... there is no 'gender segregation' within Australian Scouts either. Boys and girls are in the same troops, go on the same camps... do all their Scouting together... and this works perfectly fine with no problems. Scouts are Scouts and respect each other as such.

Hi all you guys
My name is Venessa and it used to be Vincent until 2003 when I came out to the world as a transgendered person (male to female) I have been living in my gender now for almost 10 years. When I first came out I was still a scoutmaster of a troop in Illinios. I had held that position for nearly 20 years and most of all if not all in my troop acceped me, but I was forced out of scouting when the loca council refused to honor my application when we rechaarted in 2004 . so my troop made me scoutmaster emertius nad the following fall after summer camp the troop was disolved. Iam very proud of all these Eagle scouts who have returned their badges. i am now 62 years old and when I die Iwill take my uniform shirt and out flag with me and never lat council have them. GOD BLESS AMERICA
