Thanks for the post. I just read it. Julia was a homophobe when most of America was one, too. Your post seems to suggest that she matured out of that; in fact, it ends with her speaking at a fundraiser for the early victims of AIDS. Did you read that far? Does it matter to you that, while she adopted the prejudices of her times, she also, so it seems, strove to outgrow them?

Julia was a dear friend of mine and no phobe! Proof in anecdote is Julia owned a 3-speed vibrator she called "Babs". Often she would joke she was stayin' in for the evening and would be spendin' it with Babs being a funny girl. No such type of humor could have come from a homophobe. If anything, she was the "hag" and friend to many fags.

I'd wonder how she couldn't have evolved her position. Especially considering one of her very best friends was the legendary James Beard. Who used to wander about "La Peetch" in a kimono in the mornings. So yeah, were her views homophobic in the beginning? Yes. They changed over time.

Julia Child was a delightful woman, raised in a house with very conservative leanings (much of which she rejected), who had very of-the-times views on homosexuality. She had different opinions about individuals whom she knew personally as opposed to the broad and (at the time) erroneously defined category of homosexual. Eventually, when she knew better (in part thanks to her personal friendships), her views changed.

I think part of Julia's (in)sensitivity to the question of sexuality must have derived from her suspicion that Barry Humphries modeled the diction and elocution of his character Dame Edna after her.
