MA Senator Scott Brown Repeats Assertion That Gay Marriage is 'Settled Law', Won't Comment on DOMA

BrownOn the eve of the convention, the Boston Globe questions Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown on his positions regarding LGBT issues and the Republican platform.

Says the Brown campaign: “Scott Brown believes gay marriage is settled law in Massachusetts and it’s time to move on to issues like jobs and the economy. He opposes a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and woman.”

Brown has made the "settled law" remarks before. Brown wouldn't comment on where he stands on DOMA.

  1. If he were to say that marriage equality wasn't "settled law" in MA he would be living in a fantasy land devoid of basic facts. Not that many Republicans let facts get in their way, but he does have to represent his MA constituents, and gay couples marrying is simple, uncontroversial reality there at this point.

As for DOMA, MA knows it is unconstitutional and so does Scott Brown. But if he wants to stay at all within the anti-gay Republican mainstream, he cannot state the obvious.

  2. It is his way of saying in effect "I don't like gay people, I won't do anything for them, but I'll try not to say anything about them."

  3. Brown has to walk a fine line as a Republican in Massachusetts. It's his way of saying he wants to keep his job.

  4. Eleutherius: Well Brown did buck his party and vote for DADT repeal back in 2010. I don't consider that to be a small thing.

  5. So the fact that tens of thousands of his constituents, married in his state, are deprived of any federal rights doesn't bug him enough to even pipe up?

Like all Republicans, he's just plain anti-gay.

  6. Bobn, he's probably neither anti nor pro gay.

  7. It is settled law and he's trying DESPERATELY to walk that fine line between keeping his job and doing what's right. As cowardly as his remarks are, it could be a lot worse....

  9. Johnagj,

He deserves absolutely no credit on DADT. Let's get this straight:

After months of trying to get his vote, toward the very end of the session he said he'd vote for it.

The very, very next day he voted against it.

Then, he used his potential vote as a weapon to get tax cuts for the rich, holding DADT hostage.

By the time he voted for DADT, he extracted billions for the very richest Americans from the wealth of this nation. Furthermore, his vote in the end wasn't the difference maker.

Praising a Republican for holding DADT hostage makes me sick to my stomach. If he supported DADT, he should have voted for it, no strings attached. Voting for something to get something else isn't the same as supporting the first thing to begin with. Far from it.

  11. Wow somebody really wants to keep his job! The thing is, Elizabeth Warren will do all the good things that Scott Brown will do, plus a whole lot more. He doesn't offer anything that she doesn't also bring to the table.

  12. The color scheme of the watch is a testament to its legacy: the stainless steel container is an effective complement to the anthracite gray of the titanium bridge structure, eschewing any superfluous aesthetic bells and whistles and echoing other Porsche Design creations
