RNC Attendee Hurled Nuts at Black CNN Camerawoman, Called Her an ‘Animal’

Shuster

A tweet from journalist David Shuster brought attention to an ugly racial incident at the Republican National Convention yesterday:

An attendee at the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Tuesday allegedly threw nuts at a black camerawoman working for CNN and said “This is how we feed animals” before being removed from the convention, a network official confirmed to TPM.

The CNN official declined to confirm specific details of the incident to TPM but generally confirmed an account posted on Twitter by former MSNBC and Current anchor David Shuster: “GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.’”

It is not clear whether the alleged culprit was a delegate or attending the convention in some other capacity.

The HuffPo notes: "The incident would be ugly anywhere, but it is especially troubling for a party whose nominee attracted 0 percent of the black vote in a recent NBC poll."

UPDATE: CNN Political Ticker:

The convention released a statement saying, “Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated."

CNN also acknowledged the incident, saying, "CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment.”

David Shuster makes things up out of thin air and is Washington DC’s “hack extraordinaire”. Why isn’t CNN reporting it. He’s famous for having been fired from all three 24-hour news stations. Congrats!

  2. say what says

    actually Chris

they were not heckling the Puerto Rico speaker

I’d like nothing more than that report to be true to unmask the racism of the GOP for middle america…but what was happening at the same time were the ron paul people yelling and the USA chants were to drown out the ron paulbots …not to heckle the Puerto Rico speaker

The CNN camerawoman getting nuts thrown at her though was sadly very much true and blatantly racist

Except, look Marcus, the account was “generally confirmed” by CNN. That would mean that the station is trying to protect it’s access while still letting the story be told by someone else. I’m grateful to Mr. Shuster for breaking this little side show.

  4. Markus says

They see 1980 all over again, so the lamestream media becomes more un-hinged by the minute. Just remember the day after the election, they’ll be puzzled as to how it happened when it was “so close” before. They say Romney “should already be ahead”. Oh, really? With our first African American President, just a freshman? It should be UNBELIEVABLE that it even be a contest! Romney should be drowning now, not just “ahead”.

These ‘incidents’ are legion, and most turn out to be BS. I’m not saying absolutely that this was the case here, but judging by past similar incidents, it probably is. I’m reminded of the black congressmen who claimed tea party people called them racist names, but all video and audio from the scene showed this never occurred.

All sides, especially the extreme left and right, engage in such fake troll ‘incidents’.

  6. says

It’s the same racist disgusting behaviour as at a recent soccer match in England, where Rio Ferdinand (player)complained that racist items were thrown on to the pitch. At least the Football Association has taken action to investigate and to punish the offending club.

What action has the RNC taken….other than to throw out the bigot ?
Has the RNC investigated racism in its ranks ? Or is it just not interested ?

  7. BrandonJD says

I’m surprised at some of you on here believing it is fake. If it were fake you would likely see these news organizations making a bigger deal of it. But CNN clearly knows it happened and doesn’t want it to effect their viewership for the convention.

Racism exists folks, and I know some of you like to believe that it just vanished with Obama, but its here, happening all the time. All you have to do is look.

  8. Will says

These actions are sadly not new for the republican party.

The real issue is the voter ID laws. These laws must be countered with action. Anyone not registered to vote, must do so, now. These new restrictions are already in place in many states and they are not going away. All efforts must be made to make sure everyone is “officially” registered… picture ID, whatever…

These voter suppression laws will not stand in the long run and will most certainly be challenged, but for now…get yourself or anyone you know… registered.

This is one of the many ways they will try and steal this election…if we give it to them and don’t vote. It really all comes down to the numbers.

There must be a huge effort here, especially in swing states or we lose.

Well, Im not saying that this story is fake, but, if this woman was a cameraman working the convention then why is there no video? Why weren’t these people arrested? Or at the very least tazered. It’s just so over the top like a story from the “Mike Walker” game. I would like to see more coverage on this because if it is true then there should be charges brought against the offenders. Oh and FYI , there are idiots that belong to BOTH of the major parties so blaming the whole party for the alleged actions of 2 people would be just as bad as the act itself.

  10. jbee123 says

Really DK? That’s ur answer? …Forget the fact that a professional camera person would no way miss that sort of event if it were happening to them, what about the other thousands of cameras and camera phones in the place. No coverage at all? Like I said , I dont know if this incident is true or not but it sounds very made up to me.

  11. jamal49 says

@MARKUS How cute! “Lamestream media”. That’s so Sarah Palin and soooooo 2008. I’d take the advice of @SAY WHAT and take your fat, bloated, GoProud head out of your tight little republicon @$$ before you make an even bigger fool of yourself.

  12. Dastius Krazitauc says

Yes, JBEE123, that’s my answer. There is a word associated with cameras, it’s called “focus”. She was probably doing her job, focusing on events on the stage, and the other cameramen were probably doing their jobs, focusing on the stage, not other cameramen. And if she did turn the camera on the peanut tossers, you think they’d continue their racist taunts for the camera?

  13. jbee123 says

Oh please, DK. If someone is throwing peanuts at an African American and implyng that they are animals,i am certain that in a room filled with 1000’s of cameras and video that at least 1 of them would have footage of it. Forget coverage of the event, how can there be 1 square inch in that place thats not covered by a camera? sounds like bs, not saying it is and , again, if it’s true then those people should be charged.

  14. cadence says

According to the RNC Press Secretary: “Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior,” convention spokesman Kyle Downey told The Hill. “Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Why are people so quick to call racist behavior a lie? Considering some of the things that are currently going on in the Republican Party, such as the birther movement, voter suppression, and attacks against Muslims, it’s not like this type of behavior is out of the ordinary. It’s also not like people haven’t been discussing how the GOP has been pandering to bigots.

It’s good that the GOP threw these guys out. The response was the right one.

  15. ratbastard says

    Reporters:

FIND the guy who allegedly did it and do a LITTLE research of his background.

WHERE are the pics and vid[s]? This is 2012.

I’m not going to hold my breath.

  16. ratbastard says

    @jackfktwist,

I know racist behavior is quite common in Euro and Brit football matches. It’s very un-common in American sports. We Americans are apparently less racist than Euros.

  17. says

hey ratbastard, i love that you suddenly have a vested interest in evidence and facts

now, then, can you finally provide the information about the “blacks” that “shot your father” all those years ago?

    😉

  18. Caliban says

I love how the usual schmucks come out of the woodwork to deny the event ever happened AFTER it’s already been confirmed by witnesses, CNN, AND GOP convention official who say they threw two men out aver the event.

    But it didn’t happen, right?

Remember the Republicans carrying stuffed monkeys or signs referencing monkeys or bananas during the last election and the immediate aftermath? Not just one person but several different people at different events. But by all means keep denying the sizable racist component of the Republican base. It exposes you as a liar and makes you just that much easier to dismiss.

  19. ratbastard says

    @Lil’ Canadian,

100% true. The perps were a small group of young black men. Sorry you have trouble dealing with it,Lil’ Canadian. I realize it rains on your parade.

  20. GABE says

Oh please, those saying that there should be video of this! It sounds like this comment was made in the span of 5 seconds. In the time it takes for someone overhearing what was said to a) turn their cameraphone on or b) point a camera in that direction, the incident would be over. Plus, once the cameras are pionted at this person do you think he would keep saying these nasty alleged comments? Think people! There were obviously eyewitnesses to it, otherwise why else would the RNC convention acknowlege that it did happen?

  21. Bernie says

Since I do believe that incident happened, it further confirms that the Republican party is strictly a white, heterosexual, Christian and male party. My point would be: Why would any woman, non-white, non-Christian and non-heterosexual person vote for a Republican? I will never understand this. The bull…that they think the Republicans are strong on economics is nonsense; if the Republicans are so great on this, why haven’t they done anything on the Hill about the economy? They are more interested in social issues of womens’ reproductive rights, gay marriage, etc.

  22. NY2.0 says

It’s funny how the usual suspects who are GOP apologists want to deny this ever happened even though the RNC themselves openly admitted that two individuals were ejected.

Most Republicans aren’t racists but the overwhelming majority of racists are Republicans and the GOP certainly provides a welcoming environment for them.

  23. andrew says

I remember when liberals were called “pinkos”, ” soft on communism by the McCarthyites of the right. On this site all Republicans and conservatives are called “American Taliban” and KKK like. Its all the same kind of hysteria.
