Apple's iPhone 5 Has Larger Screen, Pricey String

Iphone5Apple yesterday unveiled its iPhone 5, the latest version of its increasingly ubiquitous mobile device.

In addition to all its suddenly old features, the new model includes updates for live-in computer aide Siri, a new operating system and a wider screen, which AP reviewer Michael Liedtke says has at least one woman screaming with glee.

One woman who also was testing out an iPhone 5 couldn't stop raving about how ideal the new design was for people with smaller hands. "All the other iPhones were made with men in mind because they could easily slip from your grasp if you didn't have big hands," she said. "Now we finally have an iPhone for women."

Liedtke also believes that Apple founder Steve Jobs would be "delighted with the iPhone 5's blend of beauty, utility and versatility."

The addition of a new, and pricey, $30 adapter cable, however, has some people seeing red over all the green they're going to have to spend. One reviewer remarked, "Apple could quite happily have dropped its margins...to ensure these crummy little interconnects weren’t quite so expensive."

But some economists are celebrating the prices, for the profit Apple is likely to turn could give the GDP a nice little boost. "Calculated using the so-called retail control method, sales of iPhone 5 could boost Q4 GDP by $3.2 billion, or $12.8 billion at an annual rate. This would boost annualized GDP growth in Q4 by 0.33%-point," wrote JPMorgan Chase economist Michael Feroli.

Either way, expect to see some mammoth lines at Apple stores around the world when the phone goes on sale September 28th.

  1. i think the comment about "finally there's an iPhone for women" is hilarious.

reminds me of the BIC Pens, For Her.

As for the rest of this post...I personally don't care either way. I like my 4S. That's all I need.

    Long live the Ruthless Consumerism!
And good for you, Apple zombie!

  4. PhoenixJustice, I'm with you. I never did and still don't understand all this iPhone hype (or anything by Apple for that matter). There are comparable brands out there that are just as good for a lot cheaper. I guess having the lastest iPhone is supposed to make people feel special...

*Waits for the "You're just jealous you don't have the money to buy one!" remarks*

  5. 'Guy'.

Fanboi rubbish if ever i heard it.

Android is outselling iOS nearly 4 to 1 worldwide and it will only increase, so you are better off with an Android if you want assistance from people nearby.

Siri has already been updated on iOS 6 betas that devs are using. Its still inferior to Google Now in terms of content and behind Google voice actions (the much older Android version) in terms of recognising voices.

Yes there is a screen standard. The latest high end phones are 720P, that's a movie standard. Apple throws around non standard resolutions that cause video scaling and headache for devs releasing on multiple platforms. The movie thing isn't a huge deal on a phone I grant you, but it is on a laptop if you want to watch movies. If they release a TV they better not try it, it wont wash, and yes I CAN see scaling artifacts.

iOS is using aspects of android that Apple previous dismissed as unnecessary, unfortunately they are half baked and poorly implemented. Its a poor attempt to bring the creaky old iOS up to date. Frankly its not so smart for a smartphone any more. Its 2012, an app list as a homescreen isn't going to wash any more and its not just Android that's doing it better, WP8 shows iOS up as retarded, limited and ugly.

Plenty of Androids and Noklias can match the 4S camera, but if Apple wanted to stay at the sharp end it need more than a clearer lens cover and a few features ripped from android 2.3. Not good enough for the next 12 months.

iOS is skinned unix, its just as much a rip of that as Android is of Java. Its not really all that Appley at the core. The difference is that Google never claimed to have invented Java.

Apple did not design the A6. Its a Samsung/Intrinsity CPU, built by Samsung. The GPU is designed by PowerVR. Like most Apple technology its a commissioned work, hardly anything to do with Apple at all.

In terms of external design the iPhone is ancient. Its not classic, its just old, dull and boring. Apple products have always aged badly (first iMac and first HD based iPods!!), however they are normally good at updating and keeping fresh. Not this time. The iPhone just looks ancient, its almost embarrassing, its not iconic its old.

I dont work for Google im a microbiologist in the UK. If Android didnt exist id be using WP8, the Lumia 920 is very tempting indeed, its fresh, new and clearly superior to the stagnated Apple offering.

Anyone who knows anything about the Apple/Samsung case knows the decision was deeply flawed and the jury deeply mislead by one biased man. It will be overturned on appeal. The HTC/Samsung 4G patent case is something I cant wait for. A US and EU ban on the iDevices would make my week.

"Android is outselling iOS nearly 4 to 1 worldwide and it will only increase, so you are better off with an Android if you want assistance from people nearby."

iPhone is the best-selling single phone in the world. Support is everywhere and focused. Android phones vary highly and you'll need to find someone with the exact same phone as yours for help.

"Siri … still inferior to Google Now in terms of content and behind Google voice actions (the much older Android version) in terms of recognising voices."

I believe that is your experience but, objectively, Siri would not have created such a stir if it did not present a more satisfying experience.

"Yes there is a screen standard. The latest high end phones are 720P, that's a movie standard. Apple throws around non standard resolutions that cause video scaling and headache for devs releasing on multiple platforms. "

A "standard" is a requirement. Actually, the different form factors and screens in Android phones present a far bigger problem for developers. In contrast, Apple has had the same size screen for ages, until now. But again, there is only one new iPhone to support.

"iOS is using aspects of android that Apple previous dismissed as unnecessary, unfortunately they are half baked and poorly implemented."

Strictly your opinion. Since Android makers "skin" their phones differently, there are different implementations. Which do you like?

"iOS is skinned unix, its just as much a rip of that as Android is of Java. Its not really all that Appley at the core. The difference is that Google never claimed to have invented Java."

Google is claiming it did not steal Java. You no doubt know that Oracle is suing Google for unlicensed use of Java. In the UNIX world, one can create variations and be responsible for them.

"Apple did not design the A6. … The GPU is designed by PowerVR. Like most Apple technology its a commissioned work, hardly anything to do with Apple at all."

Android phones run on ARM processors too.

"I dont work for Google im a microbiologist in the UK."

That's why your post is more opinion than knowledge of the mobile industry. I worked in the mobile industry, for one of the leading phone makers. Every lawyer in my company knew what patents Android infringed in its design. My company decided to rewrite those parts of Android so as not to infringe. Other companies, such as Samsung, chose to copy them without payment.
