Austin Police Officers Say 'It Gets Better:' VIDEO

AustinPD

In one of the more effective and touching "It Gets Better" videos, men and women from the Austin Police Department come together to send a clear message: "Before we put on our uniform, before we go to work protecting the citizens of Austin, we are a part of Texas, and we are gay." The officers and other staffers then tell their personal stories, most of which involve isolation and fear, emotions with which most LGBT people can relate.

But there's also humor and hope, as when one lady officer admits she didn't want to be the damsel in distress, "I wanted to protect the damsel in distress".

Get misty while also having a giggle AFTER THE JUMP.

  4. This is certainly a bright spot in Texas. Unfortunately, the Religious Right is trying to
    - recriminalize homosexuality
    - rewrite public school curriculum in their image (e.g. no evolution, no critical thinking, no historical accuracy)
The Religious Right actually tried to defeat the election of Joe Straus, the current Speaker of the House, because he was Jewish.

  7. These are brave people. Here in Texas the police are still EXTREMELY homophobic & gay bashing by members of the public is still considered an acceptable form of entertainment.

  8. Good we need more gay cops, TX has a bad rap but every time I've Brent he people were super nice also they have prosecuted more anti gay hate crimes than most other states even up north do. In fact I can think of at least 4 cases where they executed gay bashers.
