Baltimore Ravens Player Brendon Ayanbadejo Responds to Lawmaker's Request That He Shut Up About Gay Rights

Yesterday I posted a letter from Maryland House of Delegates member Emmett C Burns jr. to Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti asking Bisciotti to curb linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo from speaking out in support of LGBT rights and marriage equality.

AyanbadejoSaid Burns in the letter: "I am requesting that you take the necessary action, as a National Football League Owner, to inhibit such expressions from your employees and that he be ordered to cease and desist such injurious actions. I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing."

Now, Ayanbadejo says he'd "have to thank him more than anything for bringing national attention to the issue," USA Today reports.

Ayanbadejo expressed surprise that Burns was trying to remove someone's free speech rights: "For somebody to try to take that away from me I was pretty surprised, from a politician especially. People get fired for saying the things that the delegate said. People lose their jobs for discrimination...I think that whoever voted for him has their right to vote for who they believe represents their values. And if he represents their values, he's the best person for the job. If Obama represents the best values for the country, he deserves the job."

Added Ayanbadejo: "Its an equality issue. I see the big picture."

  1. Anti-gay Christians want to take away your freedom of speech, to speak freely about LGBT people, they are already working hard and spending millions of dollars to take away your right to have a gay marriage. These anti-gay Christian are the new Nazis who want to destroy anything that they do not like. Wake up America they are trying just like the mad man Hitler and his anti-gay Catholic Nazis did in World War Two, and they got away with murdering millions of Jews and Gays until the good guys stopped them.

  3. Did anyone find a site that sells noncounterfeit Ayanbadejo shirts? Towleroad: can you get the supplier as an advertiser? I could not find his shirt on the Raven's site.

  4. Sugarhill,
You are nothing but a NOM puppet eating right out of their hands. Ignorant black folks like you are getting stringed along by your puppet masters (NOM) because you're so narrow you cant think for yourself. The only thing causing the massive tension between out two communities is race baiting, WHITE hating, homophobic pieces of sht like you. You need to die before homophobia is truly eradicated you piece of dirt.

  5. Sugarhill-
Man- what a miserable, lonesome, bitter, jaded and yes... Racist existence you must have where your whole life revolves around looking for racism where there isn't any, or manufactoring it to fit your anti gay agenda. Tell me, how does it feel every day to wake up convicing your paranoia that everyones out to get you?

  6. SUGAR HILL

The fact that that's the only thing you could contribute to a heavy story like this speaks volumes about your own homophobia and racism toward caucasian gay people. And don't you ever convince yourself that because you're a black gay man you're incapable of being both homophobic and prejudice toward others race. Many of us know that's not true. I agree with the poste above, wanna know who stifles relations between the black & gay community? Grab yourself a mirror bozo.

Back to Ayanbadejo: marvelous job. Our community leaders need to loudly get involved in this story and champion those who defend us while challenging those like that MD politician.

  8. What a beautiful man. Both inside and out. I hope everyone is tweeting him support and thank yous! And telling him that you're buying his shirts because you're now a new fan. He's on twitter. Say thank you. I already did several times

  9. He needs to be celebrated for this.

The elected official needs to be shunned (where's the backlash?)

This guy is truly phenomenal for this.

And Sugarhill, aka Maggie Gallgher, pick and choose your hysteria battles. You over played your cards with this one and got called out for your calculating lame little ploy.
