'Innocence Of Muslims' Director Is Named; Was Apparently Hoodwinked

Back when the terrible film Innocence of Muslims was called Desert Warriors -- when it was just some schlocky, lucky-if-it-ever-makes-it-to-DVD film about people not named Mohammed killing each other in the desert -- its director was a fellow named Alan Roberts. And if Gawker's got the story right, then Roberts, like the actors involved with the project, had no idea Desert Warriors would be detourned by the crazed Copt, meth-maker, and petty criminal Nakoula Basseley Nakoula -- overdubbed, re-edited, and turned into anti-Islamic propaganda. Roberts, it seems, isn't anti-Islam at all.

From Gawker:

Until the release of Innocence of Muslims, the 65-year-old Roberts has had an unremarkable career as a small-time director and editor. His directing credits include some softcore porn from the 70s and 80s like 1977's Young Lady Chatterly, The Sexpert and The Happy Hooker Goes to Hollywood, third of the Happy Hooker trilogy. (It's probably no coincidence that the cast included at least two porn stars, or that Innocence of Muslims contains a graphic scene of Muhammed performing oral sex on a woman.) Roberts tried to break into action in 1991 with Karate Cop: "John Travis is the last honest cop in a future dominated by terroristic martial-arts gangs who fight gladiator-style in arenas."

Roberts is more accomplished as a film editor, with 28 editing credits, including the 2003 Johnny Knoxville/Christina Applegate vehicle Grand Theft Parsons. In the mid-2000s, he ran a digital post-production facility called Genesis Post-Production according to a press release for a documentary about Burning Man where he's credited as producer.

Since Innocence of Muslims improbably became the most talked-about film in the world, Roberts has understandably been "laying low."

  1. Reports on this are getting sketchier and curiouser.

From what I understand, there actually isnt even a film. Just psuedo-trailer and gossip about a film that probably doesnt actually exist.

  2. It's really Muslims who have been hoodwinked. Has anyone yet told them how gullible and easily manipulated they are/seem? Foolish people. It's one thing to stand up for principles and value when they are being abused but this is a clear case of someone using them for their own agenda.

Rachael Maddow did an excellent and almost terrifying show on Thursday. One of her points that stood out the most to me was why all these countries hate us and believe that the US government is behind the film. People oppressed by their own government and without the freedom of speech we almost take for granted, can not believe anything other than the US government is behind this because American citizens could not possibly have the freedom of speech that our government claims we do.

  3. I don't see why non-believers should respect Islam. Keep in mind that it's a religion that beheads homosexuals. Is this what you want to come to America?

  4. Only ignorant religious fanatics would be offended by this inept movie.

  5. "Crazed Copt"? Really? I don't believe I've seen you describe the Muslim who rioted, burned things and murdered people in the same way. Seems to me that folks who engage in such behavior are far more deserving of the appellation "crazed" than some guy who made a really bad YouTube video which many found to be insulting towards Islam. Why are you singling out an alleged Coptic Christian in this way?

  6. Glenn Greenwald has an excellent article in the Guardian(UK) about the US reaction to these riots, "How can you attack us? We're the ones who 'FREED' you!" Well, yes and no. Don't forget that we supported Mubarak for YEARS and only supported the revolution when it became inevitable, and the tear gas and other weapons he used on his own people tended to be prominently stamped "Made in the USA." They don't have quite the rosy view of us that we have of ourselves.

But that's no excuse. They ARE being manipulated by people who wanted them to act just as they are, to prove that they are savages. Not that I believe all Muslims are that way but a sizable number ARE and it's both predictable and ridiculous. Someone insulted your religion? Get over it! It was the cheesiest low-budget satire possible!

There's a pointed and funny article at The Onion about this. There's a drawing of the Hindu god Ganesha jerking off Moses and Jesus while fisting the Buddha, and the "news story" is about how this terrible drawing was released that insults major figures of FOUR world religions yet there have been no riots, no murders, and no one has had to go into hiding because they fear reprisal. Islam is never mentioned, but the comparison is obvious.

  8. I hate to use a hackneyed phrase like false flag, but this reeks of it. The whole thing stinks to high heaven. I feel bad for the ambassador and other men who were sacrificed.

  9. The trailer is reprehensible. Excusing murder and mayhem and shifting the blame to a ten minute video is pure insanity.

  10. I agree with Ratbastard for once (or twice!) This is coming close on the heels of the Pussy Riot scam, where the free speech martyrs weren't even a band with an album or anything. It's a one-two punch: First you have a cover story for the riots (probably too many children were mowed down by a U.S. soldier), then you have a secondary basis to generate even more reaction from the crowds. Meanwhile, we purse our lips in satisfaction that we respect our own conventions (First Amendment).

  12. When modern Western Style nations are coexisting on the same planet with Muslim nations, most of whose population's minds are locked in the 8th century, you have to tread very gently. Most of Islam is today where Christianity was in the 13th century and where Judaism was in Old Testament times. Mired in myth, superstition and ignorance.
